RWD > AWD > FWD.
>>
>tfw RWD, V8, 2-door, dual exhaust master race
>>
Still dont care
>>
Then why is the new type R faster than some high end rwd and awd cars?
>>
Is there a more pointless layout for a road car than AWD?
>>
>>13827209
it says preferred not best
>>
>>13827217
How is AWD useless?
>>
Honestly they all have their merits.
>>
>>13827001

It's like your life don't even be like "ooh ahh"
>>
Fwd! All depends on the driver X)
>>
>no 4wd option

not everyone has cars on /o/, check your privilege
>>
>>13826985
Tfw rwd and awd. Tfw can still have fun in fwd because I'm not a shit driver.
>>
>these FWD kiddies desperately trying to convince themselves it's not a shit tier layout
>>
>>13827755
>useless
Not useless, pointless. It gives completely unneeded traction gains at the expense of more weight.
>>
For a performance vehicle, AWD > RWD > FWD.

There's no "debate" about this shit. AWD launches quicker, gives more grip around a corner, and holds traction better.

RWD can handle more horsepower than FWD, accelerate quicker than FWD, and oversteer can be countered better and more efficiently than understeer.

FWD exists because it's cheaper, allows for more room, and is ok in the rain and snow. It's a commuter/econobox layout through and through, and if your engines produces anything over 250 horsepower, it cant deal with that much power. Outliers in this category like the new Civc R are futile and stubborn attempts to make this layout work for something it wasn't meant for. If you want proof of this, look at the pathetic performance of the Le Mans GTR, and take a look at all the FWD cars that have won the most prestigious races in the world over the years (hint: almost none).

There's no fucking debate to this.

AWD is the best for performance, followed by RWD, followed by FWD in a distant third. Soon, all wheel steering with all wheel drive and torque-vectoring will be the ultiamte setup.

There's literally no reason to have these threads, ever. Anyone who disagrees with this is a retard because they're arguing against fucking physics. No matter how much you want your opinion and your special snowflake example to disprove reality, it can't.
>>
>>13827001
But can it turn?
>>
>>13828562
Maybe in something underpowered, but cars like the GT-R would sit there just spinning the wheels going nowhere if they were RWD.

There's also snow to worry about. Yeah, you could argue that RWD on snow tires is better than AWD on all seasons, but only if you're a good driver, and 90% of murica isn't. Normies will sit there flooring it and wonder why they're not going anywhere without AWD.

>>13828596
Dis nigga knows what's up.
>>
>>13828596
That must be why all the fastest race cars are AWD... oh wait.
>>
>>13828596
Watch people ignore this post like the plague. Niggas can't handle the truth
>>
>>13828607
>cars like the GT-R would sit there just spinning the wheels going nowhere if they were RWD.
No they wouldn't, a proven by every RWD car with more power than a GT-R.
>>
>>13828612

AWD cars have been banned from certain types of competition because they were literally too good.

You're a fucking retard.
>>
>>13828620
no anon, a point proven by cars like the 918 and GTR beating lighter, more powerful cars
>>
>>13828562
It's not unneeded if you're going HAM or driving in poor traction conditions like rain or snow, which most people do.

>hurrr just use snow tires
You should use snow tires, but unless your goal in life is to see lots of soccer moms causing accidents, then be grateful they have AWD cars.
>>
>>13828637
front drive is just as good for normal driving in snow and perfectly safe

Most RWD cars with a shit ton of power that don't have traction problems will have wide-ass slicks or drag radials on them. It's simple physics, to have enough traction for your power level you need a sufficiently large contact patch with a sticky enough tire compound. With AWD you can have more contact patch under driven wheels.
>>
>>13828628
Cars have been banned from major race series for having the wrong type of filaments in the headlight bulbs. There are very few things on cars that haven't been banned in a race series, and it's almost never because something is "too good".
>>
>>13827209
So looking at this chart, you would deduce that FWD is superior because one top of the line FWD is better than SOME RWD and SOME AWD?
>>
>>13828641
Sure, its very nearly as good in cautious driving, but most people don't want "good enough" if they can afford more, especially when they have kids and start seeing it as a safety issue and have no intention of pushing the limits.

They are not banned from Le Mans. They are fast but RWD cars are still competitive. F1 cars blow any AWD car out of the water anyway.

AWD is a marketing gimmick.

Your mom's a marketing gimmick
>>
>>13828596
one wrinkle to this is that over the past 5 years torque vectoring has all of a sudden become standard for FWD, even in econoboxes which goes a long way towards correcting any understeering affect. Due to this and its inherently lower weight, FWD has become much more competitive than it has in many areas.

>>13828690
>awd cars have 8 tires

they don't call it four wheel drive for nothing :*)

Can 4WD or FWD even drift like RWD?

Then winner here is obvious.

Now lets talk about engine placement.

Rotaries were banned from Le Mans because they were too good, and Chrysler's Hemi was banned from NASCAR because it was too good.
>>
>>13828697
When you're moving in a straight line, and to a lesser extent while turning, your traction issues are only relevant to the driven wheels. Driving twice as many wheels develops roughly twice as much usable traction.

All of the issues he described are fixed by not being a retard and going slowly in snow.
>>
>>13828706
>Rotaries were banned from Le Mans
It wasn't a targeted rotary ban, and the 787 wasn't particularly good at endurance racing.

> Chrysler's Hemi was banned from NASCAR
The Hemi ran in NASCAR for years, you are probably thinking of the Ford Cammer, which of course was good, but was banned for homologation reasons. NASCAR did want to ban the Hemi but it didn't go through, Chrysler did actually make a lot of Hemi street cars while Ford only sold a handful of Cammer cars, enough to meet homologation reqs for A/FX drag racing but not stock car racing.

F1 cars are a stupid example. Because of their light build AWD would bring a weight penalty and Aero is everything.
Things like power and weight distribution are heavily compromised for better aero because a smaller improvement is worth more.

>Mac Demere is a veteran automotive journalist and a recovering race car driver. He raced in the 24 Hours of Daytona and NASCAR Southwest Tour series
NASCAR doesn't count as being a race car driver. Oooh, lemme turn left 800 times, that takes REAL skill.

>However, my experience—hard-earned from wrecking more than one AWD vehicle during snow-handling tests for a tire company—is that AWD is counter-productive when the roads are slick.

He doesn't sound like that great of a driver to me. It's not hard to adjust your speed to the conditions of the road and you'd be retarded not to.

>It is true that AWD is excellent at preventing the tail from stepping out under power. But this is not "improving handling."
Bullshit. Not having to countersteer as much means better handling.

>But good tires beat AWD.
How nice, he conveniently sidesteps the fact that you can put snow tires on an AWD vehicle too.

>>13828873
>At the same time AWD doesn't improve your handling, it does offer an overly optimistic sense of available traction, and it provides the potential to be going so much faster when you need to stop.

How is adjusting your speed for the conditions shitposting? He says it makes it easier to believe you can go faster, but that leaves out the helpful reminder that ALL cars have 4 wheel brakes and 4 wheel drive won't help with that. If you're not a retard you won't drive too fast for the conditions.

It sounds to me like he's just butthurt that he lost to an AWD car.
