Hi guys, I'm sure threads like this pop up all the time, but I'm mildly-interested in buying a DeLorean. How rare are these cars in actuality? The only way I've been able to find some for sale is on craigslist and some Facebook groups. I know less than 10k were manufactured (ish?) and I do have the money to buy one, but I've seen prices go from $10k-$50k. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated! Also I don't post/lurk much here so if you're going to come thru and destroy me then...please refrain I suppose
>>
but the renault engine with cis
cis!
>>
>>13823770
I would definitely discard the engine and put something nicer in if I were to get one
>>
>>13823762
If Wheeler Dealers has taught me anything, then $15K is a good price for a decent-condition one with some minor issues and dings.

Note that fixing dings in a DeLorean is a bit more difficult than fixing them on an ordinary car. With an ordinary car, you might be able to get away with paint and polish with the more minor imperfections. But with the DeLorean, it isn't painted - the body is raw exposed stainless steel. So that don't work.
>>
>>13823762
If you make it your dd you're retarded.
Otherwise it's a 20 year old car that will need love and money...lots of money.
>>
>>13823784
why bother then?
>>
>>13823786
Right, definitely noted. A guy near-ish me wants $22k for one with 30k miles but I'm not exactly thrilled about dropping $20k instantly on one of these, you know?
>>
Im no pro, but ive heard DeLoreans are pretty shitty cars (i mean its pretty obvious that whoever has one wont use it as a DD but whatever). Everyone thinks they are cool when they see one do you will get a lot of attention in that sucker. As far as parts for it goes, i hear there is actually a place somewhere in the US that still has a ton of leftover ones and is the last place where an official DMC mechanic still is. But maybe im just some faggot and i know nothing. Good luck on the car OP. and prepare for a shitstorm from anons about how the car us useless.
>>
>>13823789
Seriously? The stock motor is garbage

whats the appeal of it? why not just get an old esprit? the old turbo 4 was actually fast. i mean genuinely.
motorweek did the se in 12.9 @107
thats the 4 banger. so yeah in my opinion esprit>delorean
>>
>>13823800
yeah but there are better cars then. if you have to do all that work just get something better.
>>
>>13823826
Because the Delorean:

1) Looks fucking badass, even if its powerplant is shit
2) Has the Back to the Future association going for it, making it a "meme-car"
>>
>>13823834
I mean, I suppose. But I love the way the DMC-12 looks and with a better engine it would be even cooler.
>>13823826
I've never seen one of those for sale ever

you saying esprit is not badass? it looks almost the same, a wedge.
>>
>>13823852
really i see a lot of esprit. thats odd. im in central il and see them about 4x a year. not so with a delorean.
>>
There is actually a dealership that still makes parts for them here in Texas. Cool looks, shitty reliability. I have seen ones where people drop 5.0s in them, and those generally are less desired due to "molestation."
>>
>>13823858
Hm, I live in New England
>>
>>13823864
they are slightly more common than a nsx i would say. but faster than one. i mean they had about the same weight, and more power. of course its faster.
>>
>>13823873
I see I see. Eh of course the one downfall would be that they don't have DAT cult following
>>
>>13823852
>with a better engine it would be even cooler.
A non-stock engine will destroy the car's value.
>>
>>13823931
i guess he needs to do a stage 2 then.
>>
>>13823931
Not if you put in a rotary like it was supposed to have.

Here OP. Even the only certified DeLorean mechanic who has worked on hundreds of them can't keep the engine from falling apart.
>>
>>13825548
Ah I've seen this video. This car doesn't have the stock engine and it hadn't been used in years or months (I don't remember) before this vid was made

you MUST be livinmg under a rock, because they aren't that rare.

Rare in the sense that there arent THAT many circulating, sure. But they aren't difficult to come by, when the DeLorean Motor Company revived around 2007, based in Texas, owned by a former repairman who bought all the rights and remaining factory stock.

They primarily sell refurbished DeLoreans. They used to for a while, offer a "new build" program where they would build you a brand new DMC-12 out of stock parts, dont know if they still do that, that part of their website disappeared. But what I'm pretty sure they STILL offer, is a 3 tier upgrade program to the engine.

as for price, a refurbished one can start anywhere between 30-40k, though most of the car listings will say "inquire for price".

the one time I managed to actually try the online "build and price your own new build" I recall it going upwards of 50k for a "brand new" stock part car.

if you google the company you might find their website. I believe they have 3 dealerships. Texas, Florida, and Midwest

The guy who wrote the books that Game of Thrones is from has a DeLorean. Now you know!
>>
>>13829555
Half his writing is about mens' wieners, too.
>>
Friend's father had a DeLorean, it sounded like a lawnmower.
>>
>>13829555
That's not his, it's just borrowed from Ernest Cline.
>>
>>13823837
>2) Has the Back to the Future association going for it, making it a "meme-car"
And the Esprit has the James Bond association going for it.
>>
>>13829077
Again, I live in New England...never even seen one of them before. I am well aware of the "new" DMC company that's based in Texas, that's kind of far and the pre-owned vehicles they sell (although I'm sure they're well-maintained), are very expensive
>>
>>13823799

That place exists. I've seen it once
>>
>>13830998
>that's kind of far and the pre-owned vehicles they sell (although I'm sure they're well-maintained), are very expensive
thats really the only option if you want to ensure a quality used DeLorean, or risk getting a cheap one off of ebay.

It may not be a real supercar or anything, but thats like buying a used ferrari off of craigslist. thats something you just dont do.
