Gonna be getting a 93 2wd 5 speed soon. Does anyone else on /o/ own one and want to share their experiences? Also it's gonna be my first manual vehicle
>>
>>13820287
Good trucks.
I had a 4x4 that could barely hold 65mph though.
2wd shouldn't have that issue

Funny you mention that, I've got a '93 2wd 5spd (22RE). It's a fun little truck, the 22RE is surprisingly peppy, and of course, dat reliability. I've got to ask though, how many miles are on this one you're looking at?

>>13820300
Meh, probably get better fuel economy than the 4x4, but I feel uneasy at 70 with mine.

Related: Pic of my '93 the week before I braved -40 degree windchill to buy it.
>>
>>13820688
215k, it's being given to me for free by my father so I can't complain at all. I was DDing an 84 chevy k10 but the transmission has gone out on me.
>>
>>13821197
Ah, that's cool. You'll have the service records on hand (big plus of course), and I take it the timing chain tensioner/guide has been swapped for a metal one? If it has, you shouldn't have to worry about big maintenance problems for quite a long time to come.

That being said, provided the clutch is in good shape, learning manual on this isn't all that hard. The torque at idle is enough to where if I want to creep forward I don't even have to give it gas, unless I'm on a really steep hill.
>>
>>13821197
Id fix the k10 to be honest. Sure the Yota's are great little trucks, but under powered vehicles on the highway suck.
>>
>>13820287
Dad has a 4X4 94 22RE.

He just rebuilt the whole thing from bottom up. Things working like new.

ONLY thing he's missing is a winch&front bumper adapter.

The bumper is 1K, without the winch itself.

Also I learned manual in that truck. The clutch is super heavy, meaning you can let it go almost all the way and it won't stall like those cars.
>>
I have a 90 4x4 5 speed 22re. Pretty good truck. Had it since 2008 I think. I have had to replace the brake master cylinder and alternator. So easy to work on and parts are cheap.
>>
>>13820287
I have a 4x4 4runner from that generation (94). Absolutly love it but i wouldn't suggest the v6, it puts out a little more hp than the 4 cylinder but that fuel economy is garbage plus the head gasket problem you'll run into eventually. From what I hear the 22RTE is amazing and the 4x4 transfer box is unbreakable.

I have a friend with the 3vze
It's a turd, but it works.

Told him to avoid the v6, and just get a 22re, but eh. Not my problem.

Now he's got all sorts of plans for new exhaust (So the HG's don't pop) or swapping in one of the newer V6's.

He's totally head over heals for his lemon mobile.
But again, eh... It get's him around offroad.

Told him if I came across a SJ30 I'm buying it so I can show him what it means to actually off road.
>>
>>13822881
In what way is a exhaust going to prevent a blown head gasket
>>
>>13822885
From what little I've read, and what little BS I can translate from him:
The exhaust is too closely routed to the head or some shit, causes an area of the heads to get hotter than the rest, and warps the head (????? Maybe it just cooks the HG)

DESU after hearing that, and the little reading I've done on 3vze's, I just glazed over, I'd just rather have the 22RE.

Also he thinks that Datsun trucks are the worst trucks ever made, so yea.
>>
>>13820287
I've got an 4x2 04 Tacoma with the 5 speed manual. They are essentially the same truck--my 04 Taco has almost no mechanical differences with my dad's 82 Pickup. The biggest difference is fuel injected vs. carbureted.

It's an outstanding little truck. It gets 24 mpg pretty much regardless (laden, highway, driving up a tree), the manual is pretty easy to drive, and it's actually decently comfortable. Stock stereo and speakers aren't terrible, which is a plus.

I learned to drive stick in my dad's 82. Again, super easy to drive. The manual is very forgiving. His has like a 4-inch lift with after market suspension and bigger tires, plus 4x4 option. It goes 70 down the SoCal freeways just fine. My 04 Taco feels like it's going to die, but that's because the fucking engines were designed on 91 RON and the best I've got in Texas is 93 bullshit, and I still only run the 89.

They are outstanding trucks. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. They also hold their value incredibly well. I bought my 04 back in 2012 with 85k miles for $10.5k (still over-payed, but it was the cheapest I could find after almost a year of searching). Barely a month later I had someone offer me $14k pretty much in cash for it. Earlier this year, I had a local dealership offer me damn near what I paid for it.

The other thing that's nice, although is pretty inconsequential, is that literally everyone who rides in it with me makes a point to tell me that it's refreshing to see a small truck instead of something that's uselessly big and obviously a compensation tool. No bullshit.
>>
>>13822892
Holy shit, do you know what I just realized?

I've been mixing up RON and R+M/2 my entire life. R+M/2 is the higher rating. I'm putting the exact gas I should be in my truck. It's so shitty because the fucking engine doesn't have balance shafts.

Disregard, I suck dicks.

It's a shame that the Tacos are growing bigger and bigger as time goes on; the newest being almost the size of the first gen Tundra, all because of 'Murican supersizing. Where my compact pickup class gone?

> Flatbed

I don't get why so many are converted to flatbeds, is there a good reason behind this?

>>13824566
An old farmer owned this before me, making me the second owner. Supposedly his son traded it in on a new Taco.
>>
>>13824807
Flatbeds are usually cheaper to put on after you've smashed up the factory bed
>>
>>13822885
>>13822889
The head gaskets were under engineered and failed when super hot so that with the combination of the passenger exhaust manifold has to go across the transmission then make a 90 again to connect with the driver exhaust manifold and exit 180 through the side. It's fucked in there
>>
>>13824825
Ah, that makes sense then. Finding a good condition factory bed (especially in northern states) is pretty rare.

Own a 91 4x4 22RE 5-speed. Fun little truck to hoon around in, but it basically tops out at 65. Im sure the heavy ass iron grille guard and roll bar don't help. Thinking of getting some prerunner fenders + matching hood, but I'm not sure if they'd look alright on a 4x4.
>>
>>13825838
Turns out I do have the 03 after all...what does it cost to replace the head gasket? Im only at 71k miles so I dont think I should have any issues for a while.

Why the fuck are they so expensive?
>>
>>13829436
Tacomas are expensive, the pickups aren't. Adding the name to the bumper literally makes them worth twice as much. you can pick up an early 90s model with ~200k for $4k, which is a hell of a deal for what they are

I have a 98 4x4 with the 3RZ and a 5 speed. It's slow as balls but won't die. Been my DD for 8 years and all I've had to fix is starter contacts and lug studs. Be careful about the lug studs, I had 5 of 6 snap one day after getting new tires installed, and I snapped another when I was taking a wheel off. They were made of extremely soft steel.

Objectively the greatest trucks ever made.
My dad had an '84 2wd longbed carbed 22R. He never even changed the oil, just added about a quart every two weeks. The oil leak would kill an tarbo about every 18 months, but he beat the shit out of that work truck for nearly 300k miles before buying a new Taco Prerunner. The timing chain fell off once, but it didn't kill the 22R, he replaced it and drove another 100k.

He also lit the interior on fire, full blaze with a cigarette, the windows were up and the truck was full of smoke. Garden hose drenched the fire out. Fixed seat with pile of junkmail and newspapers.
The brakes fell off the truck once, just as he pulled into the driveway. That truck was unkillable.

I had an '88 with 38.5" tires I beat the hell out of at Hollister Hills SVRA every weekend. Sold it for $3k to some beaners and bought a '74 fj40 for $3k.

My dad had a '73 fj40. He worked at a panel shop, prefabbing panels for Vegas casinos that were fabbed up in Reno and trucked to Vegas. There was a steep hill at work that the truck would drive up and park in a lot up top. One day a trailer came off the hitch of a truck and careened down the hill, crashing into the fj40 at around 30mph.
The Cruiser spun like a top and was smashed on the passenger side rear quarter.
Dad drove it home and soon had the best body shop in town fix it up good as new.
Toyotas are fucking indestructible.

>>13822633

>>13822892
I hate the trend that domestic(USA) trucks are going. Have you seen the 201X chevys? They look like someone fed a Silvarado Twinkies 24/7. Ford isn't much better. Also single cabs require a human sacrifice to find. >>13823827
I don't even understand why we're going bigger. So many people I've talked to want a truck the size of a old taco/ranger/etc. Even the early 2000 Silvarados weren't that big. Parking spots keep getting smaller, and pickups keep getting bigger.

>>13824971
You can also set up a flat bed to have walls pretty easily allowing you more utility out of it.

>>13830118
Why did Toyota get rid of that badge. It was their best one, their new one looks like they want to suck Fords cock.

what makes it so bad is the steering wheel isn't even adjustable and it nearly touches the seat

>hilariously slow
like it's almost a fucking game how hard you have to beat on it just to reach highway speeds

>22re isn't nearly as reliable as many people would have you believe

I know only two people with 22re tacoma and between both of them they have gone through 5 engines in the 3 yrs I've known them

They're not terrible trucks but they're really not any better than rangers or s10s and they generally cost 2 -3 times more.
>>
>>13829500
Yeah but I can pick up (lol) a early 90s Hardbody, Ranger, S10, B2200, Isuzu, etc with ~200k for $800
>>
>>13831956
I'm 5'8 and fit in one just fine. If you are more than 5'10 it's prob snug though, I almost have the seat against the back of the cab.

>22re isn't nearly as reliable as many people would have you believe

The later "laserblock" 22RE is indeed not as good as the earlier short deck models. But still tough if taken care of properly.

>hilariously slow
4x4 with big tires for sure, a rcsb 2wd weighs 2450lb and the late 22re puts out 115hp and 140tq so it should be comparable to a na miata in acceleration.
>>
>>13831956
S10s are dogshit.
Rangers are almost as good as Hilux... except the interior disintegrates much sooner on the Fords, and the Toyotas have superior/stronger axles, transmissions, transfercases and have the better suspension.

GM really does make shitheaps though. I'd never, ever buy GM.

I've gone over 100mph in an early '90s 2wd short/short Hilux, and overloaded it with sand to the bedrails many times, and hauled tons of broken out concrete. I've gone 75mph+ in a lifted '87 Hilux with 38" tires.

I'm calling bullshit on your post.

Reason they're getting bigger is because Americans are getting bigger, and they're getting bulkier because everything needs to be safe these days and good drivers no longer exist to automakers.

When Toyota came out with that Back To The Future II concept Taco, I was disappoint. If you compare the dimensions, the new Tacos are roughly the same as the first gen Tundra. Plus, you can't even get single cab as an option anymore. At least manual is still an option...
>>
>>13831956
5'7" manlet here, and I can fit fine :^)

> 22RE reliability

The only (namely) achilles heel to the 22RE was the plastic timing chain tensioner/guide.

>>13833876
Also removing the head to do a timing chain or having the flange to the timing cover leak forever. Also have to replace the head gasket on any camshaft swap. At least they only need the job once in their lifetimes
