I AM MONITORING THIS THREAD

No but I need a good cheap affordable and reliable car, and I hear SAAB'a are good. Especially the 9-3 and 9-5. So please post away either picures or tales about your SAABs. Or Volvo's. I know some old Volvo's look pretty nice. Don't know about how good they are though. Today I saw a nice old red Volvo like this. Looked nice.

I got mine for $400 but it needed extensive brake work (new rotors, pads, a couple of calipers, and a parking brake adjustment). All that has been pretty cheap since I'm doing it on my own but it needs a fair amount of work if it's ever going to be restored to its former glory.

I love my Saab but I'm always afraid that the next big problem won't be fixable. So far I've had to splice a wire to bypass the neutral safety switch so my car will actually start all the time, then recently I had to tear off the front wheel well so I could remove the theft alarm as a preventative measure. Other than that I love it.

Saabs are good, but if you don't know exactly what car to get then it means you will probably be relyi ng on a mechanic which means you will be fucked and a saab probably isn't the car for you.

That being said, saab 9-5 made after 2005 or 9-3 4 2.0T (capital t) from 2005 are o.k.
>>
>>13822931
Not really, a bit harder to find but not impossible. A saab oem t7 dic can still be had for less than 300 if you know where to look

I've had it over a week now, I love it.

Needs some minor work still. Window trim is coming off a bit on one window. The locks on the back doors are sticking a bit. And there's some kind of knocking sound coming from the front-right wheel, I think it might be a bearing.

It's all worth it though, such a beautiful car inside and out, and so much fun to drive.

I've had an 89 740 turbo for about 3 months, I also owned an '88 240 for several years. (pic related)

Check the idle control system, mine had idled rough and stalled when shifting (auto) and I found out turbo models commonly get this system clogged.

Be religious about oil changes; the turbo shares the engine oil for coolant, and it won't tolerate dirty oil. Also, use premium. While its not absolutely required, it will reduce the possibility of knock, and is worth paying 20% more (too bad the gas milage of these is not very good)

LET YOUR CAR IDLE BEFORE SHUTTING OFF. Very important, I let mine idle for 10-30 seconds every time. Old any old turbo car, the oil is still very hot when you park, and needs to flow for a bit or else it could literally boil in your turbo.

Having owned both, the 740 is the better more luxurious car, but the 240 feels more solid and uniquely Scandinavian.
>>
>>13829490
Thanks for the advice, it idles fine and I have maintenance records from pretty much new. Is it a good idea to invest in a turbo timer?

If you're looking for a Volvo, consider at the 92-98 960/S90/V90 series. They had already switched to the newer, more efficient whiteblock motor but they were still using the older 740 chassis (940 is basically a facelift with 960 and S90 a facelift of a facelift).

That means you have a very basic and easy-to-wrench chassis with RWD and a decently powerful IL6 engine (~190-200 HP factory US spec) running to what is basically a Lexus GS300 gearbox (IE bulletproof).
They don't have the hipster/collector appeal of the older 740s and 240s so they aren't marked up, nobody hoons them, neglect can be a problem (particularly PCV and timing belts) but they are nevertheless plenty reliable. I paid 2k for mine (had to put about another 1k in preventative maintenance/oil/tires) but you could get one for a lot less.

Here's an example. 1,350, smogged, full inspection, no peeling clearcoat like mine has although it's a 200k mile car but for that cheap just run it till it dies.
http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/cto/5300168804.html

How's it run?
Well, land yacht. Feels like a crown victoria. Accelerates pretty briskly and smoothly. Corners surprisingly well. Extremely good turn radius. Visibility also surprisingly great. Safety is outstanding. Mileage isn't, expect 20mpg average, with 18 city and 26 on a long roadtrip (I actually count using the trip meter and I have hit the EPA estimates exactly). Overall I think it's the best car Volvo ever made. Decent power without too much complexity. Good comfy layout. I just wish I had the wagon instead.
>>
how would a 94 940 turno wagon be for a daily driver? i could get one for about $600. had amechanic look at it, and it needs a little work, but mechanically, it's fine. 240,000 miles

I was eyeing some ipd overload coils for the backs but what should I do for the front? Any shocks/struts that have good value?

Would be extremely hard since the length, chassi, suspension, drivetrain, gearbox, everything is Subaru, so a GM based 9-3 have very little that could work in that body.

Paid $1400 for my '92. Previous owner neglected it severely, and I've been fixing it up slowly but surely while dairying it and using it for courier work.

So far I've replaced
>Muffler
>Steering rack
>ball joints
>Tie rod ends

Engine started leaking oil, so I opened the flame trap and promptly broke the plastic housing, so I just took all that shit out and threw it in the trash until I get a new one, fuck the environment. Immediately the engine was much more responsive and powerful. The old flame trap hoses were completely clogged with shit. Now I'm hoping the crankcase pressure didn't totally destroy the front seals. No matter what happens to this car it just keeps fucking going. Nothing will kill these magnificent machines.

i would describe them as idiot tolerant. Mine had a bunch of vacuum hoses hooked up wrong or missing and it ran good but smoked like shit when i first got it. They always drive decent so it's easy to drive them into the ground.

If it's sad it will misbehave and start smoking; then it will puke (oil or coolant), usually at an inconvenient time; if you don't listen then it will look for ways to die.

So basically all volvos are teenagers.

I bought a 9-5 Aero recently and the engine light keeps coming on. The codes are poor catalytic converter performance and hot intake air. It's fast as fuck especially 80km/h and upwards but whenever I go at anything but "normal" speed that stupid light comes on.

fellas, need some help
can someone clarify the suspension on late 940s/v90? the wagons
so they have that weird fibreglass independent leaf thing, if I get the coilovers from kaperneke (sp?) racing then do they just bolt in? what needs to be modded?
is there a normal IRS that can be modded in?
the self-leveling nivomat suspension, was that for the independent leaf thing, the solid axle or some other independent rear?

thanks a ton guys

Its shaking badly enough as is - if I was going to do anything with the lights now it would be putting a LED-bar on the roof, although that is overkill... just wait until I get my SUV in a few years, that one will put a new meaning to the word "northern lights"
>>
>>13847797
While LEDS would be better in anyway, I kinda like the look of big old headlights.
Maybe they should make LEDs with big ass reflectors. That way we could use the old reflectors and simply change the bulb to a LED plug.

Because my 9-5 license plate lamps are on the trunk so when the car is on and you close it the lamps often break...
A LED version in the same slot would be a good way to prevent dead lamps every month.
>>
>>13847815

Halogens in that size have better range, and with three of them I cover a damned good, wide area. I also don't have a roofrack or other similar good area to place them in, and also; the lights cost $35 per lamp, so its a cheap, good investment for the time being... and with my sisters reversing skills its a good thing I didn't go for something expensive (pic related)

The future SUV will have 2 x 9" 75w xenonlamps on a bullbar on the front, and either one larger LED-bar for the close-range high beams or two smaller ones for the same purpose
>>
>>13847841
So that's why they are aligned so retarded. :(
Slap two smaller LED ramps in the grill and be done with lights then. :)

Middle and right one is much closer to eachother due to the distance between the mounting-points being different for god knows what reason... shoddy workmansship, but you can't complain on something that cost $3

The one on the right was completley fucked, so I bought a new one. At the same time I decided to just go "fuck it" and add another while I was at it, which quite honestly was a genius move, as it meant I could angle them in such a way that I now see so much more of the closer area of the forest, which may one day save me from that one "tiny" moose plowing through my windshield

Goddamn I want this car

True shame
>window buttons in the wrong place
Indeed.
It's better to have them in the middle so the co-pilot can keep track of the passenger windows so I don't have to since I'm the first pilot, I should have to deal with passengers.
>all the leds on the radio work
My 9-5 from 2003 still works, which is a wonder, but I could always fix it myself if one of the pixels stop working.
>no night mode
This is the real killer.
Shame no other brand implement such features.

Because you get the voices that they intended and original voices are 99.9% better than dubs.
And I think they are charming and as a Swede I do know what they say.

0-100 times are not important for SAABs.
My B235R Aero have faster 0-100 times and it's FWD, but it's limited on 1st and 2nd gear.
440nm is only unlocked on 3rd and up.
>>
>>13846010

Exterior is fine, interiors is over. Motor is perfect, the previous owner was cautious... suspension is new, so is the battery and the alternator. I just had to put on 4 tyres, all the belts, all the filters, 4 spark plugs and a oil change.

fo a car of this price I can't complain... it's the 118ch B200 in it, 1983 version.
