Don't know the Portuguese market all that well, but I like the E36 compacts myself. Can't see a reason beyond expensive parts and questionable reliability to not recommend it.

The biggest problem I've heard about via BMWfags is that the rear suspension on the Compact cars is extremely weak because it's shared with the BMW Z3 as opposed t the proper E36 BMW rear end.

u got it mixed up, the compact uses the rear suspension from the e30, and the z3 uses the whole suspension from the e36
but thats not a bad thing, the compact has got a decent suspension anyway
