I was just about to post up a thread myself.

I actually have an update. My Z finally passed smog! that headache is finally over. that new Nissan Catalytic Converter worked wonders. I took my car to my uncle who races cars to help me fix all my vacuum tubes. all he did was ziptie the loose ones and tape up the broken ones. And sure enough it passed..."Theres more than one way to fuck a donkey, anon."
Whatever works I guess.

A couple days ago I got my GoPro a suction cup mount. so i played around with it a little and made this video:

It's nothing special, The only reason I'm uploading it is because of the end..

holy crap your cat is adorable. Looks like Boots did when he was an adolescent; he'd even sit like that.

Here's one of the other outdoor cats we have, Theodore Busterfield the First, or Teddy as we like to call him. To keep it Datsun related, we caught him and his siblings under the 240Z when they were lil' bits. They're now permanent outdoor cats that kill pests.

When I left my z out in the drive way a stray cat started living in it (he got in through the tail light holes). I named him shrigis and we became close friends. At first he was apprehensive of me and ran away whenever I got close. Every evening I would bring him little morals and snacks to nourish him and bring back his strength. eventually he learned to trust me and he would let me pet him. After a while he would come into the garage and hang out with me whenever I worked on the datsun then one day he out of the blue he stopped coming to visit me. Shrigis was kill. A car hit him. It was a very sad day and many a tear were shed. Pic related. Shrigis's old home.
>>

Any cat that likes a Datsun is a cat welcome in my heart.

Serious question now. Why are there a lot of people out there that absolutely hare classic Zs? Is it because it's not muh American muscle?

>be me getting car smogged

>"what year is this piece?"

>"well no matter what year it is, they all deserve to be off the road in in the junk yard. HARHARHARHAR"

>>
>>13817792

i think it's very hard to fully explain a matter of personal preference, and even more so when you're trying to do it for entire groups of people you've just lumped together based on how they feel about 1 model of car. i wouldn't worry about it.
>>
>>13817792
>hy are there a lot of people out there that absolutely hare classic Zs?
Because there are a lot of people that hate other vehicles and have elitist attitudes when it comes to X car brand or X demographic.

I try my best to not hate on other car groups, and evenly respect all (except stance fags, they can go to hell). I've gotten much hate for supporting JDM while in the muscle scene, and I've gotten tons of hate for supporting the muscle scene while I'm in the JDM scene (the photo I posted above with the cat, teddy? That's my fathers C20 with a 496 big block in it).

You'll just find a lot of intolerant people out there who will hate on you for having something they don't like. Ignore these people.

Oooooooor maybe this guy lost to a Z back in the day and he's still butt-flustered, who knows.

About to trade my s14 for 1973 240z with l28 from 77 280z. Very little rust, only floors and I can manage floors. No hatch rust no frame rail rust. 4spd car. No carpet. Yay or nay? Also its 904 Kilimanjaro white
>>
>>13821873
The s14 in question was my very first car and I bought it all by myself with no intention of giving it up, but I've wanted a 240z since I was little and this is such a clean example that I don't think I could pass it up. These feels.
>>
>>13821873
>>13821908
Gonna need pictures.
If you do go through with it, you'll likely want a new engine as the late 280Z L28s were emissions-crippled hunks of shit. Find yourself a flat-top F54 engine out of a non-turbo ZX and stick either an N42 or P90(a) head on it. A 260Z E88 is also an option but will likely be harder to find.
>>
>>13821873
oooooh, that's a difficult one.
I love S30's, but the S14 is also your first car.
This is going to have to be a personal decision for you.

If your S14 is really clean and/or the S30 is dirty, I'd probably say keep it.

If your S14 isn't clean, I'd probably say trade it.
But you're gonna have to make this decision.

>>13822000
Somewhat true. The N42/M47 head combo is a good combo, especially with carbs. All that emissions shit can be yanked off with ease.

Although, an F54/P79 combo (the stock engine in N/A 280ZX's from '81-'83) is better. And an F54 with flat tops and a P90 head is about as good as you can get with stock L series parts.

A good cheap build would be an F54 with flat tops and an MN47 head from the late '70's to early '80's Maxima L24's. They have a smaller combustion chamber, and kick ass with just light porting. Cheap, too.

But S14 anon, I wouldn't worry about the engine that's sitting in the S30 right now, it's more than fine.
>>
>>13820115
Hate is a strong word my man, care to explain?
>>
>>13822240
>fuckin' clean, literally rust free, all original 240Z
>cut it up

>"it's an experience, man"
>S30's jump in value in the last week I'm not shitting you
>stancefags all about that Ess Thirty Z yallknowhatImeen? #HELLAFLUSH #STANCENATION

Fuck that shit. I like Sung, but I don't like that they raped that perfectly good 240Z, and then fucked us over by bringing S30's really into the eyes of the stance fags. The S30 chassis cannot take much abuse to the frame rails, it simply can't. Stance fags actively grind the fuckers off when they lower them to the point where they bust oil pans on fuckin' light reflectors.

>but to keep it Datsun related, one of the body designers of the 2000GT was first hired by Nissan, who then said "fuck it, we don't need a sports car", and Toyota picked him up. That started the ball rolling on Nissan designing a sports car, using their old body design shit from that same dude: that's how we got the S30.
>>
>>13822265
I personally love it an encourage people to cut up and stance s30's. Eventually there will come a point when there are so few Z's that are in unmolested clean condition (like many of the ones ITT) that they will be worth quit a bit. Every year more and more z's are lost to rust and stance faggotry. In a decade I bet an unmolested rust free z will go for at least 30-45k.
>>
>>13822099
That's the tough choice for me. The s14 is an auto, but an easy swap and low miles clean title etc. The Z is the least rusty z I've ever seen in the pnw. But it's also clean.

you know, looking at the car ( this one, right? https://seattle.craigslist.org/kit/cto/5297709248.html ), I'd have to say that I'd advise you to keep your S14. That's not a special Z at all, matter of fact that was a shitty year (emissions fucked with the head design) and your S14 will continue to appreciate. If it's clean, keep it.

What would make it a special Z of you don't mind sharing? In genuinely curious. Also it has a carb'd l28 with 5spd and r200 diff from 280z. I believe they are SU carbs from an early 240z which I thought were the most efficient method of making power (other than a triple setup). Please give me your knowledge.

>What would make it a special Z of you don't mind sharing?
well for one, that car has rust. I guarantee you it's much more rust than he's saying. He mentioned that there were "some cancer spots". Okay, here's something you probably already know, but I'll bring it up again: if there's visible rust, there's about 5 times more rust that's not visible. That's not cheap.

And unless you're making big power, there's no reason to use to the R200 diff, except for the gearing changes (and I doubt it has 3:90's or 4:11's in it).

The five speed is nice but it probably isn't the close ratio five speed from the 280ZX. The L28 is great as well, plus the round tops are a nice touch, if they are in fact round tops: he provides no photos. But an L28 and round tops aren't more than $700 normally. The five speed, maybe $400.

If you want it, get it, but just realize that you will be replacing rust, and discovering issues you didn't know were there. Plus your first car will probably be riced.
>>
>>13826447
>>13826437

yep those are round tops, and a cheap header.
But I also see frame rail rust, so expect that you'll have to cap the frame rails sooner rather than later.
>>
>>13826461
>>13826475
I'm no stranger to rust repair and frame work and I can probably manage this. And my s14 is nothing too special, I've seen his previous builds and he's done rb swaps and other things. I guess I'm trying to say he takes car of his cars and build them right. I dont think I'm seeing the frame rail rust you're seeing. Mind pointing it out for me? Again I'm not trying to be a nuisance, just informed.
>>
>>13826506

>>

that's basically what happens, yes. But you have to be careful, since right below that is the tie rod mount. You have to keep the geometry right.

What's the average price to get the body unfucked by time/rust?

Been wanting to grab an s30 but thinking about how I'd have to throw so much money into it just to get it up to par makes my wallet cry.
>>
>>13843498
Depends on how you do it and how bad it is. If you take it to a really good shop the labor will be expensive. It also depends on how bad the rust is and how capable you are. Frame rails are an expensive and time consuming job that requires the rusty section to be cut out and new ones welded in just don't in order to keep the suspension geometry right. Floors on the other hand are easier, just a slightly formed flat piece of metal you can weld in. Any rear quarter rust is very hard to fix due to body shape. It can range from a few hundred dollars to multiple thousands. All based on how bad it really is. Hope that helped.

>Frame rails are an expensive and time consuming job that requires the rusty section to be cut out and new ones welded in just don't in order to keep the suspension geometry right.
somewhat true.

The front frame rails can be a bitch since that's where the tie rods are, but the often rusty rear frame rails are a fairly easy fix that can be done within a weekend with zero welding experience beforehand.

Rear quarter panel rust is not easy, that is true, but it is also fixable.

but >>13843498 , it all comes down to what are you rich in: money or time? Because a large amount of either can fix the problems.
>>
>>13845536
I agree they are both fixable but with someone with no body experience, it would be extremely challenging to match the body curvature
>>
>>13845707
>what is replacement panel
>what is chalk line
>what is body hammer set
>what is body glaze

it's not rocket science.

Not worth it. Maybe $700 for the engine and tranny -$300 worth of labour to remove them from the vehicle. The "car" itself is actually a pile of trash that belongs in the dumpster
>>
>>13846296
Not for a 2+2 unless it's immaculate. Try 3k

Best ute Ive ever seen desu
>>
>>13846289
>>13846296
the highest I'd go would be like $3,500, and that's if it's clean as fuck, with maintenance records. And it MUST be a manual as well.

Because face it: 280ZX 2+2's don't exactly appreciate much at all. They probably never will.

C'mon guys some people have different situations that prevent them from getting licenses until They are older. This is a pretty chill thread and board, at least he's very lnowledgable and not just a usual /o/ shitposter.

You need auto insurance to have a drivers license and drive; I cannot afford the auto insurance at the moment, since I am going to school full time and helping my dad with his business when he needs it. I can't work a conventional job with both of those things taking up my time. My father does pay me when I help him (he's a general contractor), but he can't afford to pay much; I make less than minimum wage when I do work for him, which is more often than not since he's not far off from 60, and working in construction isn't wonderful for your body.

I have never been given a car to use or had auto insurance paid for me since we are absolutely in the definition of "poor" (we made $19k last year). It's never even been a thought to ask for it.

So my parents gave me three things: a roof over my head while I'm in college, home cooked meals, and dad's rusted 240Z, since it's the only semblance of a vehicle that they had to give me. The deal is that once it's street legal, it's mine, lock stock and barrel.

Unfortunately, I am the only one in the family willing to undertake the endeavor of fixing it (father helps with advice and a second hand sometimes though), and I bit off more than I could chew in the beginning, no lie. And you are right, I was underage B& b8 back when I originally started posting, I'm 19 currently.

The only thing I can do is work on it bit by bit as time and finances allow.
>>
>>13853875
I work in construction and I make a ass more than 19k a year and I'm still green as fuck. Are there no jobs in your area?
>>
>>13854244
slow as shit, the only people busy right now are roofers and gutter guys.

These last few years haven't been nice.
