Manual or automatic?
http://strawpoll.me/5710787
>>
No both option?
http://strawpoll.me/5710808
>>
Both have their uses, and we've advanced automatic transmissions to the point where they work really well. I noticed a lot of the negative stigma people have against automatics were problems seen in early automatic transmissions.

Performance and general reliability wise, manual is better in many situations. I hope to see CVT technology be advanced enough to where it performs admirably... but for now they're fairly underwhelming and unreliable.
>>
>>13633953
>advanced automatic transmissions to the point where they work really well
They shifts very well, but their reliability is even worse now. Most modern autotragics won't live past 100k without issues
>>
>>13634141
That's complete bullshit.
>>
>>13633785
Manual.

>b-b-but muh modern automatics are faster
Don't care. It's a subjective judgement and I enjoy driving more when I have a manual transmission.
>>
>>13634141
Yeah that's complete bullshit apart from CVTs maybe.
>>
>>13634162
I can vouch at least for ZF transmissions
>>

automated manual > manual > automatic >>>>>>> CVT
>>
DSG or Toyota's CVT only :)
>>
Manual transmissions are for fun driving
Automatic transmissions are for boring driving
Not all people enjoy driving, those people drive automatics.
Others really enjoy driving, they drive manuals.
>>
>>13634250
TCU controlled Zf transmissions have always been shit though.

The 4speed in my E23 only lasted 130k miles.

Never had problems with getrags manuals though.

manual for racing, speed and quick turns.
automatic for cruising and relaxed driving.

With the exception of new autos especially automated manual, Most affordable automatics you can't control power output, and they bog down in turns making them slower out of the corners.

Manuals in higher torque cars can cruise easily while lower torque cars its not as easy.
>>
>>13634939
>you can't control power output
Yea, you can. It's called a throttle.

Are you really this stupid?
>>
>>13634945
Are you really that stupid?

When you go into a corner you're off the throttle and most autos don't down shift enough to where when you're back on the throttle there's no torque to launch out of corner, or the transmission take precious seconds to shift to the right gear.

In a manual you should already be in the right gear, with right amount of torque.

No transmission takes second tobshift anything. Every even slightly sporty automatic allows nominative shifting nowadays, so you could easily been in the correct gear for the duration of a turn. Stop insulting people over dinosaur technology. It's not 1968 anymore, automatics are better
>>
>>13635010
>Every even slightly sporty automatic allows nominative shifting nowadays,

>>13634939
>With the exception of new autos especially automated manual,

I just said that dumbass.

Regardless the vast majority of autos out there cannot do what you just described though, they do take seconds to find the right gear after having to shift through one or two other gears to find it.

Hell most older autos coast and do not even engine brake when you're off the throttle, and wont shift UNTIL you throttle back up.

Mean while an adept driver, driving a manual would be in right gear immediately and can launch out of the turn.
>>
>DD a manual for bout 11 months now

Shift manually, stupid.

>>

Also you'll need to remember not to shift down too soon, since you don't have a clutch, and your transmission may not even allow it, since autos try to keep the car from even getting close to redline...

I won't say it's without issues, since it grinds like a ghetto bitch on the dance floor, but my '98 Ram 1500 with 286k miles still has the original transmission and still drives.

For driving, I prefer manual. For personal reasons, because I like my arm directly interacting with the powertrain; and for practical reasons, because I like being able to control what gear I'm in and the torque I'm putting to the ground. For practical purposes, any type of transmission which allows me to control which gear I'm in is all I want.

A GMT400 would be a C/K1500, and the guy would know it. It wouldn't say Silverado anywhere on the truck, unless it had the small Silverado badges from the trim level. He has a Silverado 1500, that's a GMT800. It doesn't have a 4L80E unless it's a 6.0 1500HD. Case is closed.
>>
>>13637229
It doesn't need to say Silverado on the damn truck. Its still a Silverado. Nobody says my 1999 Chevy C 1500. C/K is a designation for 2wd or 4wd.
>>
>>13634961
>In a manual you should already be in the right gear, with right amount of torque.
in a manual, you have to take out your attention from the actual cornering and one hand from the steering wheel to put the correct gear, losing reaction time, in auto you just brake and use momentum to launch again.

The actual problem with autos, are 90's-2000's stupid and slow computerized gearboxes, old hydraulic-only auto trans where far more reliable, predictable and even durable.

Feels fucking good man

I was missing out by driving only autos, it makes a big difference. Now I look forward to driving manual when I have to commute. Plus you have more control over the car by being able to launch, overtake easier, not holding down the brake pedal at every intersection, fuel economy vs acceleration, engine braking, and theft prevention if you're in the states.
>>
>>13637389
Yeah i find shifting fun, too. Don't work your clutch to much though or you will need a new one after 70k miles.
>>
>>13637404
Ok. I try to limit using the clutch only when shifting and not to drop it nor ease it for a long time. Also if I need to move a little. At a red light if I'm behind a few cars I'll even sit in neutral because they're some controversy whether depressing the clutch all the way in wears it or not.
>>
>>13637435
I have been driving sticks all my life now and as far as my experience goes the clutch does not suffer from compressing it. Leaving it in neutral is still more comfortable though.
