Hey /o/

First time posting, me and a friend are considering building a small go kart. Anybody here have experience with this? Or any diagrams?

I need help with this.
>>
itd be easier to just buy an old racing kart
>>
>>12495525
We considered it, and I thibk it'd be cheaper (and a hella lot funner) to just build one. So far we can get

>50cc engine from a motorcycle scrapyard
>metal for the frame
>wheels from an old atv
>pedals and steering wheel

I just don't know how to set it all up. YouTube doesn't really help.
>>
So your not building a small go cart. Nor are you creative or mechanically inclined it seems. You just want to be told how to build a go cart.
>>
>>12495553
>(and a hella lot funner)
Jesus...Christ...
>>
>>12495516
Well im going to take a stab in the dark and say you dont know how to weld, nor do you have access to a welder. Correct me if im wrong.
>>
>>12495588
I don't know much about mechanics. But I think I found a rough design on how to make an automatic one speed go kart. Now to buy the parts.

>>12495594
Well, it's gotta be fun :^)

>>12495605
I do know how to weld, and I do have access to a welder so that isn't a problem.
>>
>>12495553
Easiest way is to get a centrifugal clutch (can be bought from a gokart shop or online, and use that, rather than worrying about any sort of gearing. Will take some messing around with the throttle to get the idle going correctly. If you can weld pretty well then you're set, if not, then its going to be pretty expensive to get done because there will be a fair bit to do.
>>
>>12495648
Thank you, the gears seemed like a problem to work with but I'll just use that. And luckily I do have access to a welder so I can just get everything together cheaply.
>>
>>12495639
Jesus fucking Christ, how old are you? Judging by your atrocious grammar and the fact that you have no idea what the fuck you're doing, I'd say about 15.
>>
>>12495516
I'm making one right now. Making one from scratch WILL NICKLE AND DIME YOU INTO THE HUNDREDS.

Im going to make a live rear axle using keystock (offroad only). when you factor in pillow bearings that dont suck and sprocket and brakes and axle etc. you're talking 100 dollars easy on just the driveline.

Do yourself a favor and just get a predator 212cc from harbor freight. Used small engines always need shit like carb rebuild and a 50cc aint gonna do shit with your atv wheels. Im using rear wheels and tires off of a riding mower and the 212cc is gonna be slow with them probably.

For steering youll have to buy tie rods, they are cheap thankfully. The frame is easy if you know how to weld. I just used oxy/acetylene and it turned out nice. If you dont know how to weld then you're dreaming.
>>
>>12495668
18 actually, senior in hs. Thanks for your input though.

>>12495672
I'll look into the 212cc, thank you. I also have access to both electrical and oxyacetylene welders so that'll be cheap.
>>
>>12495672
I was originally going to use a snowmobile yamaha 292 but it needs a weird magneto system or coil conversion and the clutch system adapted. Its honestly just easier to spend the 100 on a predator and you know its new.

Is it possible to throw an engine on one of these things? My friend used to have one when I was younger and I always wondered
>>
>>12495692
>senior in hs

That explains your terrible grammar and retarded slang, then.
>>
>>12495739
Good observation, I would've never guessed.
>>
>>12495730
put an LS7 in it.
>>
>>12495730
yes but you would have to add a platform in the back and you would have to work around doing wheelies. Basically cut the back half off and redo it thus not worth the time.
>>
>>12495662
if you're not super experienced/don't have access to alignment tools, maybe get the clutch and sprocket welded to the driveshaft professionally, because a less than great job there will wreck the project. That is, unless you can get a clutch with some sort of adapter kit. Any gokart hobbyist shop should be able to advise you.
>>
>>12495739
why are you angry though?
>>
>>12495730
chevy 350 small block should bolt straight in with only minor modifications.

What questions do you have?

Just use the internet, buy all the cheapest shit you can off of ebay, and enjoy your death kart

CC81 did all the wielding and I basically drilled in the seat and other accessory's
>>
>>12495800
This reminds me, whatever happened to that one guy that bought that mid engined hyundai deathtrap? Did he die?
>>
>>12495770
Thank you, I'll look for a hobby shop. They'll help me some more.

>>12495800
Basically stupid mechanics questions that would embarass any of you /o/ regulars.

I.e., how does the pedal connect to the motor, how to add a hand brake, stuff like that.
>>
>>12495781
I'm not angry at all actually, I was just wondering why you type/act like you're still in highschool. I have my answer now.

>>
>>12495873
Thank you.

>>12495880
That's why it's fun haha
>>
>>12495907
what questions do you have?
>>
>>12495914
Mostly these >>12495853. I don't know what engine to use, or how to connect the pedals and brakes to it. Or if I'm going to add speeds to it, which would be sweet if I could figure out how to manage all that mechanic.

Alright, go kart dood

First off start with a box for your frame
weld metal in a box that can withstand your weight and it should literally look like a square or rectangle

Then weld in your cross beams as needed (the crossbeams are for you to bolt in your seat and your engine)

Pic up the lightest seat possible, and you should just consider buying an engine from harbor freight that you know runs
>>
>>12495931
Lurking, pls continue

go buy an axel and the other parts you need in order to mount the axel
wheels, bearings, brakes and other shit my drunk as can't remember

and also buy a sprocket to mount a chain from your axel to your engine

all this shit can be found on ebay

the engine you want is a harbor freight predator engine, 6.5 hp 212cc. the pedal connects to the motor with a cord. their is a throttle with a throttle return spring on it, but you don't *really* need it.

I recommend BMI karts, this is the place where you can get great parts, pretty decent prices. http://www.bmikarts.com/

IMG_3584.jpg

your engine runs off of a throttle,

run a cable through the throttle, and then run it along the frame

yet again, visit ebay and buy some go kart pedals and run that cable to your pedal

like Kitty Kat said, we used a spring for a return on ours

you can use throttle cable (recommended) or be cheap like us and use bike brake cables

here it is being ran to the engine

the key to this build is simplicity

literally run a chain from your engine to make your back wheels spin

be as simple as possible

IMG_3588.jpg

for your brakes you should use a pedal and run it along the frame to your drum, just like the throttle

we used a handbrake because I broke the pedal in a moment of panic
Like kitty kat said, this is a dangerous toy

any questions with anything I said so far

Also take screen shots if your gonna be back here in a week bugging us again

So far understanding it all.

>>12495951
Thanks for the website, and the engine too. Have had that one recommended twice already, should be good.

So it's literally just the engine to a chain to a sprocket on the axle for the back wheels, with a throttle running a throttle cable to the engine. Brake works the same way.

>>12495984
>>12495992
What about an emergency/hand brake? Or should I just have a foot brake?

By the way, thank you for all this, it's making a lot more sense.

since I'm not seeing any questions I'm gonna move on to the steering

try and mock what we did, that way you have a stable steering column
we welded a tab to the bottom of our steering column and ran a rod to tabs on the left and right wheel

by doing this when we turn our steering wheel to the left and right, it will move the wheels accordingly
>>
>>12496007
Sorry for replying so late >>12496004
>>
>>12496004
they're dirt cheap and they can make around 8 or 9 horsepower when uncorked. you can also rebuild them with your eyes closed.

and you got the assemblies right. you don't need a hand/parking brake if you are running a foot brake, you only have room for one.

>>12496009
no prob

here is the steering wheel turning, its moving the tab, and thus moving the wheels accordingly

anything your unclear on in the whole build, because thats about all I can think off

pretend its a motorcycle (chain driven), but instead of driving/steering one wheel, theres two

listen to this advice >>12496014
the only reason I have a handbrake is because I snapped my pedal

Thanks /o/.

he's asking for advice on how to go about building a small go kart. I'm not sure what your sperging out over.
>>12495672
>50cc aint gonna do shit with your atv wheels
Engine size doesn't mean anything. the predator 212 makes like 5 or 6hp, which is pretty much what your average 50cc 2 stroke will make. 4 strokes are generally in the 3-5 range. either way it's fuck all for power.
>>
I think I got everything I didn't get. The rest seems pretty straight forward, so thank you very much.
>>
>>12496040
why did you use such a shitty seat?
>>
>>12496064
it was free

cc81 had a parts prelude there for a point of time and we were impatient

we just bolted in that Honda Prelude seat and ran with it
>>
>>12496079
What's the top speed on that bad boy?
>>
>>12496098
honestly probably only 25 (maybe 30 but thats pushing it) miles an hour, but your so low to the ground and it was so shittly put together, it feels faster and more dangerous

that and its easy as fuck to drift which is all I've been doing with it now

you are high. 50cc 2stroke wont have shit for torque and with big wheels he'll have to rev the piss out of it just to get going.
>>
>>12495553
How is some frankestein 50cc motorised trolley hella lot funner than 125/100 purposebuilt racekart?
Or is the definition of gokart in america something with big wheels and shitty engine and absolutely no chassis complexity? ok i guess
>>
>>12497024
Definetely not. Just cheaper, and funner to build. Plus I kinda want that extra layer of 'oh shit' in my build. Gives you excitement.
