http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2016/09/13/exile-snowden-requests-presidential-pardon/90279602/

>Edward Snowden, the National Security whistleblower to some and traitor to others, said he will seek a pardon from President Obama for his role in disclosing a series of documents showing government surveillance on American citizens.

>But the White House appears to be disinclined to consider his case as he remains exiled in Russia rather than face charges in federal court that he violated the Espionage Act.

>In an interview with the British newspaper The Guardian published Tuesday, Snowden doesn't dispute that he broke federal law by stealing secret documents about eavesdropping while employed as a contractor for the National Security Agency.

>“Yes, there are laws on the books that say one thing, but that is perhaps why the pardon power exists – for the exceptions, for the things that may seem unlawful in letters on a page but when we look at them morally, when we look at them ethically, when we look at the results, it seems these were necessary things, these were vital things,” Snowden said.

>Obama has given few pardons during his presidency, instead focusing his constitutional clemency power on commutations for drug offenders who he says received disproportionately long sentence as part of a decades-long "war on drugs." And in response to a question from USA TODAY last month, Obama said he would not follow the practice of past presidents in granting last-minute, politically motivated pardons, instead requiring all pardons to go through the formal Department of Justice process.

>On that basis, Snowden appears ineligible for a presidential pardon. While presidents can pardon people not convicted of a crime — President Gerald Ford pardoned President Richard Nixon, after all — the Obama administration guidelines require an applicant to wait five years after a conviction and pass an FBI background check, a process that can take years to complete.

He's absolutely right. Because James Clapper was lying to congress under oath, breaking the law was the only possible way to expose the unconstitutional behavior of the NSA. He did it in defense civil rights, and he hurt exactly nobody. If a criminal justice system exists that would send a man to prison for that, it does not deserve to be humored, and if the presidential pardon can't be used for that, then it should not exist.

The fact the everyone in the U.S. government responded to his heroism by getting angry about the fact that it's now marginally more difficult to violate people's civil rights on a global scale and claiming that he should have used internal channels, when it's public knowledge that he'd watched multiple peers attempt that and fail, had ought to tell you what a totalitarian shit hole the U.S. really is.

>Because James Clapper was lying to congress under oath
Whoa there, Anon! Let's not accuse Congress of looking the other way when they happen to agree personally with what the person under oath is saying, unlike say Comey or Hillary...

I think the real story here is that Snowden apparently thinks both Hillary and Trump would be a lot less lenient on him if he came back to face the music than how Obama's administration would treat him.

>conservative source

And the point of that was...?
>>
>>72202
I wanted a source even /pol/ would believe.

Snowden will be pardoned. He's just entertainment. And not a whistleblower. You know bundle of rights. His overture was inspiring and for some reason it mocks that of Chelsea Manning.
>>
>>72216
Which do you think would be more likely to pardon Snowden, Trump or Hillary?

I would say neither would, but I'm interested in what you think.
>>
>>72221
not him but Hillary. After a while. Liberals like to look like the good guys at the end while still following neocon warhawks policies up until then.

Trump wants to play big guy while occasionally giving an inconsequential nod to the anti gov types.

It's all a controlled false duality show tho. Ever wondered why controlled op Jones never called out trump on Snowden?
>>
>>72221
Both. It seems as if Snowden may have been hired as a legal representative of several lawsuits involving wire taps. You know, prism. I see some of Chelsea Mannings and Assange's doings being attributed to Snowden.

As for James Clapper. I bet you, that man was doing what was asked of him to do. Or perhaps acted out of his own free will underminding civil liberties. Either way Washington would prefer the latter. Nothing along Edwards Snowdens trail points to James Clapper. Except what is being released to the media. From the looks of it, if you interpret Russia's political desires through Putin's own research and requests. You'd realize they are after a high technological weapon of sorts.

Snowden has basically been playing the romanticized victim of roman freedman law. Which is actually popular in today's political arenas, ofcourse, undermined in informality. But highly valued in positioning.
>>
>>72225
The most powerful person in the political arena of today is the russian-american person. You can add Ukraine into that statistic as well, since to the Classical historian Russia is just another name for East Ukraine. The most feared speculated hegemony to come. The Chinese nor the Indian person can even compete since they have a low natural resource ratio per capita. However their military manpower is out of this world.
>>
>>72228
whaddaya mean by a "russian-american" person?
>>
I've read a few times that some of the documents he released resulted in the deaths of 12 or some people, but never any sources. does anyone know anything about this?
>>
>>72252
Are you sure you aren't talking about Manning's docu-dump? That was mostly State Department (surprised more people don't bring this up with Hillary) and military stuff, which revealed a lot of Army informants in Iraq and Afghanistan, among other things.

The Snowden leaks were more about active and former intelligence gathering programs and assets. Not only NSA, also CIA and other governments.
>>
Not really. What he did was important and he's a hero, but also a traitor.
>>
The difference between a hero and a traitor is which side wins
>>
anyone have a link 2 a full vid?
>>
traitor
>>
>>72315
Yeah. Maybe he should have his sentence commuted a bit, but he still deserves time for skedaddling to Hong Kong with a drive of sweet sweet secret government porn.
>>
He is a hero.American people is a a nation of slaves.American films tells them how to be slaves.that he was wrong...the slaves were never able to hear and think that...about the master is wrong ...they may think ... that.... you have the right to see what mistakes do the master...Obama turned a progressive free europe....in a fascist Europe...with his immigrant .Now tell your movies to breed with them...keep your home your dumb
>>
I'm sure that the fact Russia was able to begin hiding their military movements more effectively right after the Snowden leak and thereby became more effectively surprising in the outbreak of the Ukrainian proxy war had nothing to do with the fact that Snowden went to Russia "without any of the documents he stole" and they gave him asylum. Surely, that treasure trove of insight into US covert operations that Snowden totally didn't give them didn't lead to the Russians improving their fieldcraft and lines of communication. And, of course, the fact that Russia has stepped up their cyber warfare attacks against the US in recent years is probably not in part due to the depth of US foreign surveillance over their own government as revealed by our pardon-requesting "hero". I also bet the Russians didn't learn anything about how to better hack systems in general by reading about how the NSA did it, since Snowden didn't give them anything.

Fuck him. If I was a Ukrainian-American, I would want to see him hanged.

>>72212
>I wanted a source even /pol/ would believe
Then just make something up and say "they" don't want you to know this
>>
>>75503
This
>>
>>72216
Chelsea Manning mocks himself, he doesn't need any help in that department. He didn't vet any of the info he gave out either, and that likely put a lot of people in danger.
>>
>>72221
Hilldog. Trump might personally feel for the guy, idk, but his voterbase still call for Snowden's head on a pike. Hard left and hard right both want him hanged, but Clinton will at least attempt to appease the forgiving moderates.
