I think Hawaii is west of the east coast of the upside-down continental states. It's small and overlapping the border so I'm not sure.

Ok, in short the "exaggeration" of northern country sizes in many maps is an artifact of the Mercator projection, which was used in navigation because latitude and longitude lines would always be straight and the proportional shape of features would be preserved. In sacrifice for these benefits, the relative area of features dramatically increases when moving further from the Equator, North or South. Since the Equator virtually bisects Africa, Africa appears very small on Mercator world maps, while Greenland and Alaska appear fucking enormous, and Antarctica would extend to infinity if world maps didn't truncate it. Mappers did not purposely exaggerate anything -- they made a trade-off. The other major straight-line projection is Peters, which preserves areas but greatly exaggerates shape away from the Equator, so if you're only using a map in small sections it's pretty fucking useless. Modern atlases use computer-generated compromises between area and proportion when showing regional maps.
