For those unfamiliar wirh Germany, FKK means Freikörperkultur or free body culture, but in practice means an area set aside for those who don't wish to wear any clothing, and nothing lewd at all. I'm not a naturist in any way but when in Germany I would go only to these FKK areas because it was more comfortable, cleaner and the people were just ordinary.
Quite normal for Germans, but surprises visitors, especially British and Americans.

All my West German friends considered FKK normal, all my East German friends found it lewd. Not wearing clothes is the norm in saunas (at least in the North, Bavaria and Austria appeared more prudish), and sexes are completely mixed with never any incident. Some saunas would have ladies only one night a week.

The areas for the "clothed" tended to be noisier and messier, the east Germans would be there, for some reason the Ossies were a lot more prudish.

First hand experience of young children and old people (all ages) mixing freely in North German sauna areas - which in the best centres are large areas with cold water pools, cold bucket showers, multiple sauna rooms , seating and tables for snacks. Zero problem with anyone. The one taboo would be to not disenfect and not shower properly before entering.

that's actually not true at all, FKK and nudist camps are an east German thing, they have way more of that than the west

That was my first hand experience, so it was true. Over 20 years ago, my east German friends had recently arrived after the wall came down. They carried a lot of baggage: instinctive racism, litter bugs, failure to understand western contracts and obligations. Things must have changed in the interim.
