All that's happened so far:
Military blocked passage from Asia to Europe on both bridges in İstanbul
F16s, Cobra helicopters flying low over Grand National Assembly.
Tanks outside Atatürk Airport
Turkish Armed Forces "taken over"
All of the above are illegal and NOT government
Popular social media blocked, %80 of population learned to change DNS tho.
Possible injuries, even fatalities though not confirmed.

Parse out what we know, what's the best and worse possible scenario?
We do know Erdogan is against ISIS/ISIL/Daesh and has locked down their border with them, but won't help the Kurdish forces because they consider them terrorists. What are the possible motivations for the military to take control? Do you think they will be harsher or less harsh to Kurds and/or ISIS?
Can someone just give me a general background on the recent politics of the region? Where does Erdogan stand with Russia? Does Turkey's NATO membership mean NATO will send troops to regain control? How likely is there going to be a NATO/US draft and should I start stockpiling canned food and water? Ok that last one was a joke but 4 reel

>>58890
My thoughts exactly
>>
>>58884
Based on US & Russian statements thus far, they're both backing this coup (like they did in Egypt).

I don't mean bribing the army, or supplying them....but they've agreed not to stop it. All the US-Russian diplomacy of the last few weeks suddenly makes sense....and it probably is mostly about Syria. Erog & co have, via action, made it clear they're prefering ISIS to the Kurds...so they're gone.
>>
>>58885
It was reported that TRT main HQ was also a target of the military.
>>
>>58889
Any turkbros can translate what are they chanting?
>>
>>58870
Cops are apparently already disarmed by the military. As far as media here in the Netherlands goes. But nothing is getting really confirmed.
>>
So they're supposedly rising against Erdogan's Islamisation of the state, and are trying to reinstall secular rule of law in the country. Assuming it's not a load of crap that's a good thing right? Last thing we need is a huge fundamentalist Islamic country on the doorstep of the civilised world.
>>
When did the coup start?
>>
Everybody take notes on how they this coup is done so we can get the beta uprising right
>>
>>58877
Except if it fits their purposes.

Iirc, when there was a coup in ukraine (anti-russia and pro-EU), the west was very supportive of them.
So if they believe they're better off with the military leaders, bb Erdogan.

If the airforce weren't coupers they'd have attacked some of the definite-coupers by now.

Seems like the 'official' highest command desk-jobs of the military are political appointees loyal to constitution, but so far looks like coup is complete, army not split.

Some General Turksson had discreet contact with us & russia giving their blessing/consent, so it's all over. Public statements from both going along with coup, this is a done deal.

For those of you who don't know, Turkish military is aligned with the secular / progressive beliefs of Atatürk (founder of modern Turkish state) and periodically intervene in Turkish politics to kick out governments who stray too far from the modern, secular ideals the state was founded on... I.e. they are against creeping Islamism and consolidation of power by presidents. Potentially a coup is a good thing, if you are yourself reasonably secular and "modern"

Simplified and I suggest you read up about it.

>President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said in a phone interview on broadcaster CNNTürk that a "minority group" in the military has attempted a coup.

>Erdoğan said the parallel state, referring to the followers of the U.S.-based scholar Fethullah Gülen, has promoted the attempt.

>"We will not leave the ground to them," he said, vowing to end the "occupation" by the group, called on nation to unite at squares and airports. Erdoğen said he would also be on the streets.

>The move is not as part of the chain of command., he said.

>"I am the chief commander," he said.

>Separately, on broadcaster NTV, Erdoğan said no attempt against himself was made.

>Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım said earlier that Turkey is facing an uprising attempt from inside the army, with the state-run Anadolu Agency reporting that Chief of General Staff Hulusi Akar is being kept as a hostage with a group. Erdoğan neither confirmed nor denied the information, telling that there was an "obscure atmosphere" of information.

>A group of civilians attempted to enter the state-run TRT, which is taken over by the group which attemted the coup, but the group inside fired at the group, wounding one person.

>A military helicopter was shooting fire at the TRT building.

>A group naming itself "Peace in the Country Council," published a statement on Turkey's state-run broatcaster TRT, which it had taken over during the July 15 coup attempt, that it has taken the power in the country.

>The statement said the group so-called council will trial at "fair courts" all those "have betrayed the country.

>A CNNTürk reporter said a helicopter shoot on the General Staff headquarters in Ankara.

>CNNTürk reported that two busses full of soldiers entered the headquarters of the state-run TRT in Ankara. Channels started to broadcast wheather forecast only.

>"We will punish it the hardest way," he also said.

>“Our security forces will use force against force, he said.”

>The head of the ruling Justice and Development Party's (AKP) said on broadcaster CNNTürk on the phone that a group of soldiers were trying to take them out of the building.

>He called on citizen to hit the streets against the attemp, similar to pro-govrenment papers on their websites.

>Ambulances await in front of the General in Staff headquarters in Ankara, as entrance to the building is denied.

>Atatürk Airport has been closed to traffic, with tanks waiting in front of it.

>A number of armored vehicles have cut a main road in Istanbul, where the Istanbul police headquarters is located.

Not that anon, but I have to say that while I in general think that being rid of Erdogan is only a good thing, there is the huge problem of destabilization of the state and disillusionment to be considered.
Whatever democratic constitution the military puts into place afterwards will still be tainted by the fact that they removed the guy that most people voted for (through a very undemocratic voting system, but still).
While I doubt that the situation will blow up, we must remember, that nobody expected Syria to get as bloody as it did in the first two months or so. If the MIT actually follows the order to fire at will things can get out of hand.

There is also to be considered the issue of refugees. While I was no fan of the shady ass deal that Merkel made with Erdogan (thank Serdar for pointing out how her reaction to Böhmermann proved that she had made herself susceptible to blackmail with that), there is still the issue of the 2? 3? honestly dont remember off teh top of my head, refugees trapped at the Syrian border. While I doubt that the flood gates have opened once again (the Turkish army has no interest in killing the refugee deal as they want to continue business as usual with the EU) I doubt having such a powder keg situation in the middle of this will go well for those people.
Lastly there is also to be considered the recruitment wet dream for ISIS that just happened. I mean, people from Izmir, Istanbul, Antalya etc. should be fine, as we Germans and Brits are too used to making vac. in Turkey to give it up like we did Egypt and Tunisia, but the Anatolian conservative regions, that already were structurally weak and voted for Erdogan? Yeah, those guys will probably in six months or so make their way across the border Arab-Turk hatred be damned.

Military is secular (I don't think they are Kemalist as in the party aligned, but other anons may feel free to correct me on this). They traditionally feel entitled (or obligated depending on your viewpoint) to serve as guardians of secularlism in Turkey.
After Erdogan has turned back on secularlism for years, started a war that ended decades of peace work with the Turks to call a new election and get the results he wanted, so he could change the constitution and make Turkey a presidential republic and due to him "bombing ISIS" meaning basically bombing the Kurds and ignoring ISIS (and covertly aiding ISIS when it is convienient for him, eventhough he hates them) made the military hate them. Also the fact that he castrated them pretty well via reforms a few years back.
Not enough to prevent this apparently. I think the recent terror attacks were the final straw most likely.

Not that anon, but news report that protestors control Taksim Square. Highly symbolic and if enough people fail to cooperate and start a sit in things can get messy for the military and idiots start losing their nerve and may start firing.
So far the military seems to be on top, but if control starts to slip and things are unclear things can get messy.
Not to mention if rumours get started about the military having killed someone or something.
If I were a guy angry that my president got couped out of power and out in the dark in a crowd of other angry people I'd believe in a heartbeat that those guys are murderes and start getting violent.
Really a shame that the police is from the reports at least not on the side of the military, some relatively "soft" power would be pretty useful to clear the square.

True, though the situation is not a simple 1:1 anology, as the Brotherhood was elected after a revolution following decades of dictatorship and ruled only during times of crisis. Erdogan meanwhile has been quite a mixed bag for Turkey, while being an anti democratic, reactionary dirtbag he knew never to touch the motors of economy too much to make people turn sour on him. Thus ousting him comes as a far greater shock to his supporters, who are also more numerous. Back when Sisi couped IIRC a majority of Egyptians were for it.
>>
>>59196
probably unfortunately
>>
>>59199
The soldiers in the tank gave up and are being lead to the car right now. What are they going to do? Kill innocent people and completely lose whatever inkling of support they have? Get arrested and hope the rest of your group succeeds and takes over is all they can do right now.

They're likely keeping the same Constitution with possibly a change in whether term limits combine for PM and President or the amendment process.

The thing that set the "oh shit" alarm with Erdogan was that he wanted to amend the Constitution to give himself more power as president (which has virtually no power in itself) in 2014. The entire rest of the gov't except Erdogan and his staff/advisors and biggest boosters will be kept in place, including the PM. Strangely enough, as far as the history of modern Turkey goes, military coups are kind of like part of the Check and Balance system there against extremists and authoritarians -- they've happened several times in this manner: selective removal of officials and that's it.

WHY THE GOOD GUYS ALWAYS LOOSE
>>
An hour ago, Erdogan said "Get into the streets, climb their tanks, defend the democracy" and now I can hear protestors. Thousands of people are in the streets which are mostly Erdogan supporters. They scream "Allah Akbar" and mosques repeatedly announce religious content. Protestors getting up on the tanks and firing to the soldiers. Government propaganda is everywhere on TV. National channel TRT has been taken over by military announced a coup and curfew, but now it is only a blank screen. Internet has been slowed down and Erdogan supporter people knock doors and wants you to come with them; even they do show their guns and try to scare you. Voices from outside has too many Arabic words like "Allah Akbar" and it is much like Isis.
F16 jets low flight over the city and looks like it is going bad. A tank just drived into the crowd very fast.
Things getting bad in here.

What happens is that the Turkish Army has been planning and are now executing a coup against presidency.
The Americans are probably behind it, on the side of the Army.
Erdogan wanted to consolidate power, the people voted for hims, but were Islamic plebs, people from the country who support ISIS and don't respect NATO or America too much. Erdogan is their leader.
So, Americans had the choice of either kicking Turkey out of NATO, or taking control against Islamic plebs and make it a secular country. They chose the latter.
I'm amazed, though. I thought Obama was more of a pacifist, and would rather retreat embassy and American military personnel from Turkey.
It seems Americans are trying instead to take back Turkey and make it modern and secular again. This is because Turkey has a large army and in NATO, and Americans don't want to lose such NATO asset.
What they are doing right now is fighting with the old regime, with police, national security agencies.
The people in the street are on the Army's side, the people who lost the election, and are fighting against the internal regime. The people who voted for the regime are peasants stuck in the country, they are not in cities.

The current Turkish government wasn't elected democratically.
There have been countless incidents of building where votings happened losing electricity and people not being allowefd inside to see the counting. Non of this reported on the main tv channels ofcouse because the roach owns them.

Why? they gain literally nothing from it except another headache. as you yourself said it would be massively out of character for Obama. If he were that kind of president he would acted far more different in syria.
This from all signs seems like an internal thing, that both Russia and US are sitting out, signalling that they would be willing to work with the new coup regime.
>The people on the street are on the army's side.
Right, which is why they are callin Erdogan's name. Clearly they are shouting the name of a man they wanna see hanged.
>>

2. Immense inexplicable middle finger to Turkish state that will have immense diplomatic repercussions.
>>
>>59352

>media is already painting them as the bad guys

CNN has guys saying that the military is the constitutional protectors of democracy and talking about how Erodgan is getting too authoritarian. So CNN seems to be pretty neutral as to who is good vs bad.

CNN is also not exactly sure who's winning, at least on their live TV channel.
>>
>>59382
If this is confirmed, that looks like bad news for coup. Christ does recaptcha really like its' pizza
>>
>>59395
I mean if you were on the coup's side, why even go outside? That just hinders the coup from proceeding. If you support the coup fucking stay at home and let them take care of shit.

It's over. Coup supporters will be painted as facists, anti-people, etc etc. They handled it all the right way but in the end the world refused o support them over fear of backlash from extremists. Understandable, but disheartening all the same
>>
>>59396
the statement carefully left out Erdogan's name, so its designed to be as vauge as possible. Although a government established via coup usually isn't a democratic one.
>>
>>59390
>so people are defending their shit muslim dictator.
True that. He did win the election. Purely democratic, the Americans are wrong. Morally, the Americans are right.

>>59394
>they gain literally nothing from it except another headache
They gain stability of relationship with the second largest army in NATO. Until recently, they were in NATO just with the name, but they were siding with ISIS because Erdogan and ISlamic plbs from the country support ISIS, a majority of Turks do.

> he would acted far more different in syria
No. He would have had nothing to gain in Syria. Plus, he would have had to stand against Putin.

>Right, which is why they are callin Erdogan's name. Clearly they are shouting the name of a man they wanna see hanged.
There are also Erdogan supporters in the street, obviously. I obviously don't have ALL the details. But in cities, most people voted against Erdogan. And also, Erdogan specifically asked people to come out and shout. So, yeah, you have some people on his side in the street.

Because Merkel is not about to commit political suicide. She decided to for once not sit out a problem with the refugee crisis (after she ignored it forever, but hey) and immediately went from close to a majority for her own party to a hate figure for many people. Giving refuge to a man people from all political spectrums hate with a passion would result in CDU polls joinin SPD below the 30% threshold.

There was an election last summer, AKP (strongman party) barely managed to get a coalition together. Army group takes Ankara for anti-islamist reasons, tries to order other army groups after taking supreme military HQ (official high command all ero stooges), but other army groups not ready or willing to follow with surprise coup.

Coup holds capital, relatively bloodless pseudo-protests elsewhere. Coup seemingly cannot win unless rest of army agrees.

who did they take hostage, any ranks/titles mentioned or just names?

CNN Turkey now under control of the pro-Erdogan crowds.

>he says "the military were being told what to do from Pennsylvania"

Assuming your translation is accurate, does this mean Erdogan is implying that the US is orchestrating the coup? Also is he an idiot and think Pennsylvania is the capital of the US or is there something else in Pennsylvania that he's referring to?
>>
>>59828
So basically, attack whoever attacked you.

Fair enough.

Doesn't seem you'll be seeing any action at any rate bro, so be glad of that.

>Turkey coup: Pennsylvania cleric is Erdogan foe

http://www.ydr.com/story/news/2016/07/15/turkey-coup-pennsylvania-cleric-erdogan-foe/87158206/

>Turkish government lawyer: US cleric had 'unlawful conduct'

>SCRANTON — As government officials and military forces clash in the streets of Ankara and elsewhere in Turkey, attention has turned to a reclusive Muslim cleric in Pennsylvania whom Turkey's president has long accused of orchestrating coup attempts.

>"(S)uspicion has fallen on Fethullah Gulen, a US..-based Turkish religious scholar and political enemy of Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the strongman Turkish president," writes Steve LeVine at qz.com. "Until now, Erdogan had appeared to have crushed the 75-year-old Gulen, who has deep roots in the Turkish political, military, judicial, and media establishments, as well as in Muslim countries around the world. But if, as Erdogan himself has alleged, Gulen or his followers are involved in the putsch, then it demonstrates that he remains a force to contend with, though he has lived for years in seclusion in Saylorsburg, Pennsylvania."

>The Turkish uprising comes just two weeks after a lawyer representing the Turkish government vowed to continue exposing what he calls the "unlawful conduct" of Gulen.
>>
so this was basically a false flag coup to strengthen Erdogan's position in turkey? and to give turkey a reason to hate the west? why do the good guys keep losing?

Same thing happened in the last tirkish coup in the 90s and in imia/karnak crisis.so yes nothing dramatic will happened except the people in the streets of turkey

>>59899
It's a traditional thing in Turkey from what I gathered.
>>
>>59898
You think this is a false flag coup intended to be an excuse for Erdo to suspend democracy and instate himself as de facto monarch?
Honestly doesn't sound too far-fetched for Turkey.
>>
I'm excited now. With this whole fiasco and Erdogan's triumph --while not complete, it is inevitable at this point-- we are going to see a lot of interesting reforms going on in Turkey. The rise of the neo-ottomans is at hand, God willing.

looks like someone filmed the cnn turk takeover as it was happening, there's a live thing on their facebook (won't let me post as it thinks it's spam)
>>
>>59905
it just seems strange that only one branch of the army conveniently instates a coup, tries really hard to make itself look as bad as possible, then gives up after a token effort. Not to mention Erdogan's speech about the military bombing his locations being entirely faked.
>>
>>59903
holy shit. Hitler didn't die, nor did he got to Brazil.
He went to Turkey and used copious amounts of botox and skin moisturiser to stay somewhat young looking.. relatively speaking.

i thought erdogan was pretty islamic conservatist since Gulen is all about open minded islam with dialog within the faith and focus on science and education n shit

Yeah i was the one who posted that stream, this is a separate thing - someone filming on their phone when the military turned up. I can't post it still as the filter thinks I'm spamming but go on their facebook page and it's a 12 min long fb live vid
>>
>>59922
He gave a press conferance after he landed.
>>
>>59923
CNN just showed an excerpt of the vid
>>
>>59910

There was nothing secular about the ottomans, it was a self-declared caliphate after all, but there is everything secular about the military. If a form of ottoman style rules makes a comeback with a veneer 21st century democracy, it won't due to the military. It will be due to the AKP as they are the closest to being true neo-ottomans.
>>
Is the fact that erdogan wanted to get refugee status in germany confirmed or just blabber from skynews?
>>
>>59928
I'd say it was false, he flew north, circled a little and landed at İstanbul. Probably didn't need refugee.
>>

>>59929
Seems like it was less escaping the country and more avoiding arrest be the coup antagonizers until events on the ground stabilized more.

God is with you Erdogan.
>>

>>
Only 42 dead in Ankara so far. Pretty good for an attempted coup.

So are all the traitorous generals going to be executed now?
>>
>>59952

Man getting update from /pol/ is fucking terrible, though adding sources on /k/ it seems there's a possibility that the Navy just joined the coop, and that other dissident forces might be forced to hop on board because Erdogan is going to come get them regardless of their involvement.

More on CNN:
>42 dead in Ankara
>smoke over the city in the footage
>parliament fight was a helicopter vs police, most of the dead from the number above are police from this fight
>>
>>59957
>traitorous generals going to be executed

tbqh we should just bomb the country out of existence
it's like a source for all scum

that and all of saudi arabia.
>>
>>59952
>>59954
you'll have to lurk a bit to understand the thread but the syria general threads on /pol/ are probably the best for this going forward. they're very invested into the turkey, kurd, isis, russia, saudi, US involvement over there and have some of the best sources.

they're very pro assad but some turks show up and give opposing views
