>On Sunday night, thousands of World of Warcraft players gathered to say goodbye to Nostalrius, the fan-run server that hosted a vanilla version of the iconic MMORPG until Blizzard shut it down.

>According to Nostalrius’s creators, the server had around 800,000 registered users and 150,000 active players, some of whom showed up Sunday to pay their respects.

>“The heart behind all private servers, including Nostalrius, is to recreate a version of the game that many enjoyed and that Blizzard no longer provides,” wrote testing team leader Nano.

>“When I heard the news that Nostalrius was going to have to shutdown, I nearly cried,” Nano wrote. “I’ve never experienced as rich of a community, both as a player with my guild and working within the Core team. I have friends from retail vanilla WoW still 12 years later and I believe in 12 years from now I will still have friends from Nostalrius.”

>being this into a game where nobody is in the room together
Yikes.
>>

That looks like the shitiest way to spend a Sunday
>>
The ability to run your own server used to be a standard feature of online games. Now you get sued over it. Fuck Blizzard.
>>
>>38537
this was how Overlord started
>>
The thing that doesn't make sense, is that it was a vanilla WoW server
Blizzard doesn't offer that so what the fuck is the point?
Do they think that shutting that down, people who wanted to play vanilla is suddenly going to want to play the garbage that it is now?
>>
>>38740
Yea, that's kind of the issue. There seems to be plenty of demand for the Vanilla game, yet Blizzard comes up with all sorts of excuses to bash it. I think the most notable would be that it would draw attention away from the game's progress into it's new expansions. I'd say just bundle together these vanilla legacy servers in order to still have subscriptions, no matter what version of the game they're playing.

>"It might seem silly because it's just a game... but this game was a big part of my life and a lot of people's lives. All these people want to do is go back and play it.

>"If the server is making a profit, I can see them taking down something like that - but a lot of these are just for the love of the old game."

>Commenting on its closure, the team behind Nostalrius posted: "We never saw our community as a threat for Blizzard. It sounds more like a transverse place where players can continue to enjoy old World of Warcraft's games no longer available."
>>
>>38701
You're right, but the problem was that they also distributed the game for free, making most of the users "pirates". There was no cash shop, as opposed to many servers though.

>>38740

Maybe that they think that some players are bored with the current extension, and are switching to Nostalrius, permanently or until the next expansion
>>
>>38740
They shut it down because the idea of legacy servers is something the player base has demanded yet they will not give. Instead they would like to rehash old content, time traveling orcs, alternate realities and garrisons/LFR/cross realms which killed the community and turned raiding into one big aoefest. They were just buttmad that so many people decided to play the original game instead of their garbage.

Yeah and now all the chinese gold farmers and retards from Nost have invaded Kronos and shit it up something fierce.

It's a great metaphor for the muslim invasion of Europe.
