OPERATION CHOKE POINT ATTEMPTED TO DISCOURAGE BANKS FROM OFFERING FINANCIAL SERVICES TO CUSTOMERS AND BUSINESSES THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION DEEMED AS “HIGH RISK,” WHICH INCLUDED SMALL BUSINESSES IN NEED OF SHORT-TERM LOAN AND FIREARMS DEALERS.

“All of the Department’s bank investigations conducted as part of Operation Chokepoint are now over, the initiative is no longer in effect, and it will not be undertaken again,” Boyd said in the letter, calling it a “misguided initiative” from the previous administration.
“The Department is committed to bringing enforcement actions only where warranted by the facts and the applicable law, Without regard to political preferences. This approach honors the Departments fundamental obligation to focus on the lawbreakers that deserve our undivided attention, and thereby protect the American public from fraud and other criminal activity,” the letter read.
House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., and the other Republican lawmakers sent a letter to the Department of Justice last week urging the Trump administration to officially “repudiate” the program’s guidelines.

If you are a bank you could face legal action for doing business with high risk borrowers. Some businesses default too often and we need to stop these businesses from borrowing based on predictions and projections, as well as preventing predatory banking practices. To protect the economy of course, dont want a repeat of the housing crisis right?

If you give a line of credit to anyone selling firearms or other things this administration doesnt like, there will be a subpoena on your desk by morning. If there is so much as a penny out of place, an insurance policy shirked, a fire hazard an inch to the left in that business? You will face legal reprecussions. Better to just not lend credit to these "high risk businesses"

Literally all they did was prioritize investigation of certain banks that did business with industries that had a higher risk of fraud and money laundering. Firearms manufacturers were also included which is what everyone is freaking out about, but most of the businesses were related to things like gambling, pyramid schemes, pay-day loans etc. Basically it just directed the government to investigate shady businesses and see if they were doing anything shady but also investigated businesses that Obama was ideologically opposed to. The real reason it's being shut down is because it makes it harder for rich fucks to get away with fraud and money laundering and makes it harder for pharmaceutical companies to get away with selling drugs to drug mills.
