Remember how Columbus was used back in the late-1700's and the early-1800's as a political vehicle to try to help unite the nation in thinking of themselves as American instead of Virginian or Marylander or Pennsylvanian? You know, the reason we have Columbus Day from that time. And that's why anybody gives a shit about Columbus in the USA and why there are monuments to him from that era?
