Called my family last night to check on them, and was told that some one broke into the house, I expected them to tell me that a TV was stolen or something like that but that wasn't the case, they actually just stole food from the fridge, straight up broke into a house with things that they could have easily carried out but food is way more valuable now than TVs, microwaves, phones, etc.

Nationalization of industries bigger than a bread box led to the national oil company as the sole viable source of income. When oil prices fell everything collapsed. Except those "socialist mixed economies" have much lower corporate and other business taxes than the US. They haven't grabbed up companies left and right from shareholders and handed them over to bureaucracies staffed by family friends and high ranking party members. So they're actually just capitalist economies.
