President Donald Trump’s administration moved quickly to try and lift economic sanctions on Russia and other punishments former President Barack Obama had put in place as soon as it took office in January, according to multiple sources who have spoken with Yahoo News.

“There was serious consideration by the White House to unilaterally rescind the sanctions,” according to Dan Fried, who retired in February as Coordinator for Sanctions Policy at the State Department.

Fried told veteran investigative journalist Michael Isikoff, a former national investigative correspondent for NBC News and Newsweek alumnus, that in the early weeks of the administration he got several “panicky” calls from U.S. officials. They asked: “Please, my God, can’t you stop this?”

>The sanctions in question included those imposed by Obama for Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 and others inflicted late last year to punish Moscow for its suspected efforts to interfere in the 2016 election. The plans Trump’s administration considered early on included returning diplomatic compounds seized from Russia in late 2016—recent reports say Trump is currently working to put this plan into action.

>Lifting the sanctions “would have been a win-win for Moscow,” according to Tom Malinowski who served as assistant secretary of state for democracy until inauguration day. Malinowski told Yahoo News that he heard the administration was working on a “grand bargain” with Russia.

>In April, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said clearly that the U.S. would not lift sanctions on Russia until President Vladimir Putin hands Crimea back to Ukraine.

>But Fried and Malinowski heard differently at the beginning of the administration. Both joined efforts to lobby Congress to bring in bipartisan legislation to prevent the rollback of sanctions.

>At the beginning of this year senators Ben Cardin, ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and John McCain, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, moved to table legislation which would codify the sanctions and give Congress control of rescinding them. That bill stalled in early May after Republican Senator Bob Corker, who chairs the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, opposed it.

>This week the bipartisan leaders of the Senate Banking Committee proposed their own bill to increase sanctions on Russia, hitting the country’s mining and railway industries.

>In its early days, the Trump administration sought to strike a deal with Russia by seeking cooperation against the Islamic State militant group in Syria in return, two former officials said. This came in the form of a “tasking” order at the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs within the State Department. The order asked officials to draw up a list of options, including sanctions relief and the return of the seized diplomatic buildings in Maryland and New York.

>The Washington Post reported on May 26 that Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, and then chief foreign policy adviser, Michael Flynn, met with Russia’s ambassador to Washington during the presidency’s transition period. Kushner reportedly attempted to set up a communications back channel with Moscow from Russian diplomatic facilities. The plan was rejected, but picked up by American intelligence in communications between Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak and his superiors.

>According to leaked intelligence reports, Flynn reportedly indicated to Kislyak during a phone call during the transition that Russia could expect a review of the sanctions under the Trump administration.
>>
>“We’ve been reviewing all the sanctions—and this is not exclusive to Russia,” a senior White House official told Yahoo News. “All the sanctions regimes have mechanisms built in to alleviate them.” they said, adding they hoped “the Russians would take advantage of that” by returning Crimea to Ukraine.

shady person does shady shit

So the president is building a powerful new alliance for our nation and saying fuck you to the dumpster fire called the United. What is the problem with this?
>>
>>158778
An "alliance" where he is the stooge and Putin is the boss.
>>
>>158786
So what's the problem. I'd rather have Putin as the boss than Soros or the UN
>>
>>158787
Ideology is a dangerous mistress. You would do well to wean yourself from clinging to it so hard
>>
>>158798
I have no ideology. Just two working eye balls.
>>
This article is fucking stupid. None of the sanctions have been rolled back at all. Just the act of looking at reviewing the sanctions is a crime now?
>>
>>158778
>and saying fuck you to the dumpster fire called the United
oh come on the US is having problems but it's not exactly a dumpster fire right now.
>>
>>158815
Did you even read the article? They tired to do it covertly until folks in the administration from the Obama era lobbied congress successfully to strip the WH of that power.

>>158787
well I'd rather have the Chinese be our boss than Russia. What's so special about them?
Oh, maybe we can have the Australians be our boss!

The problem is that these decisions should never be made by someone out of anything other than national interest. The trump admin is suspected of colluding with Russia in influencing our elections, which would be treason.

also
>powerful new alliance
What does have that NATO doesn't?
Literally nothing good?
What could we possibly gain from an alliance with Russia and why would we want an alliance with an autocratic state?
>>
>>158787
>I'd rather have Putin as the boss
Even though he routinely murders journalists critical of him?
>>158787
>than Soros or the UN
What's wrong with the FUCKING POTUS as the boss?
...one that's not a semi-retarded fatass though.
>>
>>158828
>Even though he routinely murders journalists critical of him?
That's actually one of the things I like most about him. He doesn't troll around with these globalist NGO agent "journalists" like Trump does. He just fucking murders them. Exactly what they deserve.
>>
>>158800
and a cabbaged up head full of a particular ideology. eabod.
>>
>>158787
>I'd rather have Putin as the boss
>I'd rather have an ex KGB as the boss
>I'd rather have a kleptocratic mafiosa as the boss
>I'd rather have "Polonium Vlad" as the boss
>I'd rather have "Bomb my own people cause they'll think it's the Chechnyans anyway" as the boss

you fuckin simple m8?
>>
>>158845
Putin kicked the jewish oligarchs teeth in and locked them up. He is a good guy in my book.
>>
>>158850
Feel free to go live in Russia then
>>
>>158876
I do. Remember Putin controls Trump. So the US is part of Russia now.
>>
>>158758
God I hope this is true. I want the return of cheap Russian rifles and spam cans.

Maybe some of the firearms import restrictions could finally be lifted.

>That leads to the question that everyone wonders but rarely dares to ask. If "black pride" is good for African-American children, where does that leave white children? It's horrifying to imagine kids being "proud to be white." Yet many scholars argue that's exactly what children's brains are already computing. Just as minority children are aware that they belong to an ethnic group with less status and wealth, most white children naturally decipher that they belong to the race that has more power, wealth, and control in society; this provides security, if not confidence. So a pride message would not just be abhorrent—it'd be redundant.

"black pride" = positive!
"white pride" = RACIST! NEO-NAZI! REEEE!

Fuck off with your kike sources, boy.

I've been to Irish, British, Italian, French, Greek, and Get cultural festivals.
I see people wearing symbols of Irish and Italian pride all the time here in Boston.
Africans except for some Islanders have virtually no ties to the culture of the continent they are indigenous. Black history month isn't really a celebration of the black race globally, just one culturally continuous community.

I don't think people mind folks expressing pride in their culture, but that becomes contentious when the pride is defined more by racial difference.

Either way, it's not typical to see majority populations outside of the west never associate with African pride or Yellow pride or Brown pride.

>>158828
>Even though he routinely murders journalists critical of him?
You mean like Klaus Oberwein or Peter W Smith?

>...one that's not a semi-retarded fatass though.
Right? A semi- witty and limp wristed community organizer with conveniently no knowledge of anything going on in his administration and a love for t-girls is much better.

>Trump WH made a secret effort to unilaterally remove sanctions on Russia
Thank you based trump. Long live Putin Long live Assad. Fuck each and every single leftist and neo-con warmonger pushing for increased tensions with Russia. Long live American/Russian alliance!

The Russia shit needs to stop. its all jut a ploy to keep this country under socialism. fuck neolibs and neocons. we need to bring America back to its roots.

If you're not a bot then please go read just 30mins on Russian history post ww2.

We don't need an Alliance with Russia and there will not ever be a real Alliance with Russia no matter what trumpers want to think. 1, Russia is only a big player because of its nuclear arsenal.
Russia would struggle to take down Germany 1v1 right now with their tiny economy and severely outdated military. They lost 4 planes in Syria last year to poor maintenance against an enemy with zero anti-air capability.

2, Russia has not once stopped it's plans for aggressive expansion. Putin has publicly spoken about his dream of reunifying the provinces that broke off when the Soviet union fell. Only problem is that none of those countries want to rejoin. Georgia is currently being occupied by Russian military and everyone knows about the Ukraine situation.

An American Alliance with Russia will basically be the usa switching sides to support Russia against NATO while gaining nothing in exchange (maybe you've heard of the most powerful Alliance on the planet that formed solely to fight Russia?). Then the rest of the world has to choose between ww3 VS Russia and US or standing by and watching Russia conquer all the surrounding nations. Who knows if they would stop there either? The only reason Ukraine still exist right now is that the US told Russia to fuck off. Now it's only "pro-Russian rebels" with tanks and artillery.
>>
>>160742
You are very delusional if you think Russia wants to invade other countrys.. What for ? More land ? More sea, resources ? If you didnt know they have country larger than surface of Pluto planet.
>>
>>162322
Yup, I guess everyone should go tell Ukraine that all those troops and Russian weapons are imaginary. Oh and Georgia too! Silly countries, Russia is just a friendly guy.
>>
>>162325
Yeah, and the US illegally invaded and Iraq and supplied weapons to rebels in Syria. What's your fucking point?
>>
>>162322
If they don't want to invade other countries why are they consistently invading other countries and projecting their military influence in places like Syria
>>
>>162322
Did you even read what anon wrote?
Putin wants to return Russia to its "formal unified glory" as he believes it was during the USSR. Natural resources aren't his primary objective to invading other counties.
Putin just wants prestige, which President Trump is handily giving to him for nothing in return. Putin is nothing but a 3rd rate kleptocrat who has been elevated way above his global status because of Trump.
>>
>>158786
Claim.

Russia is looking his boots. You give them way too much credit. Fucking autists
>>
>>162322
And most of that land is just as useful as pluto. Vast tracts of Russia are literally worthless
>>
>>162322
Oh sure the Ukranians, Syrians, and Georgians must be real fucking mistaken. Russia literally walks in, backs the local autocratic monster, and sits around in the sky dropping bombs.
>>
>>158778
Go read Bill Browders prepared remarks for his testimony this week. Its a quick Google. That should clear everything up for you.
>>
>>158830
Do you really believe journalists should be murdered

If so you should just move to Russia, that attitude has no place in the States
>>
>>158778
Kek, but he's supposed to look after our interests as our president, Ivan.
>>
>>162322
Russia has no warm water ports.
Most of their land is a cold barren desert.
They view east euroupe countries as being naturally Russian due to a deep cultural identiy shared between the two.

U.S. and Russia will never be alies/friends. At best they will be partners who mutually respect each other on shared goals.
>>
these sanctions accomplish nothing but souring relationships with Russia
Trump should have grown some nuts and not signed, but the psychological warfare on behalf of the deep state, neo-cons, prog-libs, and their MSM drones compelled him
they're killing two birds with one stone with this clever narrative they've crafted: they get to continue this irrational war against Russia and trick the American citizens into thinking that Trump is treasonous somehow
I'm mostly surprised that a lot (don't think it's the majority) of Americans are buying this batshit
>>
>>163644
You realize that he faced a veto-proof majority, right? Vetoing would have done nothing but further the Russia collusion story.
>>
>>165829
Doesn't matter he should have done what is RIGHT not what is "smart." Russian is a nothing story and trump has nothing to fear from this witch hunt.
>>
>>165831
Innocent people were burned at the stake it is best not become one of them.
>>
>>165842
Trump is not weak enough to be taken down by un American lying traitors. Real America supports him. Or do you doubt our powerful leader?
>>
As he should! He wanted nothing to do with it. He would rather keep all forms of communication and dialogue with Russia open moving forward. I hope Tillersson put the fire out on this one.
