>WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump's choice for Army secretary withdrew his nomination on Friday in the face of growing criticism over his remarks about Muslims, and gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender Americans.

>Mark Green, a Republican state senator from Tennessee, said in a statement that "false and misleading attacks" against him had turned his nomination into a distraction.

>"Tragically, my life of public service and my Christian beliefs have been mischaracterized and attacked by a few on the other side of the aisle for political gain," Green said, expressing "deep regret" over the decision.

>Green is the second Trump nominee for Army secretary to withdraw.

>The move to step aside comes after a video began circulating of a remarks Green gave in September to a tea party group in Chattanooga. Green, who is opposed to gay marriage, said being transgender is a disease. He urged that a stand be taken against "the indoctrination of Islam" in public schools" and also referred to the "Muslim horde" that invaded Constantinople hundreds of years ago.

>Several Senate Democrats, including Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, declared they would oppose Green's nomination over what they said were intolerant and disturbing views. Democrat Tammy Duckworth of Illinois, a combat veteran who lost her legs and partial use of her right arm during the Iraq war, said in a statement Friday that Green wasn't fit to lead the service.

>Schumer welcomed Green's move to step aside.

>"Mark Green's decision to withdraw his name from consideration as Army secretary is good news for all Americans, especially those who were personally vilified by his disparaging comments directed toward the LGBTQ community, Muslim community, Latino community and more," he said in a statement.
>>
>Also on Friday, a coalition of 41 organizations led by the Human Rights Campaign called on the leaders of the Senate Armed Services Committee to reject Green's nomination. The letter to Sens. John McCain of Arizona and Jack Reed of Rhode Island said Green's "shameful rhetoric" is at odds with the Army's core values and will affect recruiting.

>Green's withdrawal underscores the challenges Trump has faced in filling two of the service secretary posts. The president's first pick to be the Army's top civilian, Vincent Viola, dropped out in early February because of financial entanglements, and about three weeks later Philip B. Bilden, the Navy secretary nominee, withdrew for similar reasons.

>The GOP-led Senate is scheduled to vote Monday on the nomination of Heather Wilson to be Air Force secretary.

>Trump's decision to tap Green in early April represented a stark contrast to President Barack Obama's choice of Eric Fanning for the post. Fanning, who'd been a senior Pentagon official, was the first openly gay leader of one of the military branches.

>Green graduated from West Point in 1986 and served as an Army physician. Green is the CEO of Align MD, which provides leadership and staffing to emergency departments and hospitals, according to the White House. He served in the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment where he made three combat tours to the Middle East.

>As a Tennessee state senator, Green sponsored legislation last year that his critics have said would make it easier for businesses to discriminate against gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people.

>During his remarks before the Chattanooga tea party group, Green said the Obama administration has "bred general officers who are afraid of their shadow." He also said that "if you poll the psychiatrists, they're going to tell you that transgender is a disease."

>I'm a martyr, waaaaah

Hilarious

The thing is, he is not wrong. Political correctness welcomed by Obama's marxist agenda screwed our nation and shook the confidence of Christian Peoples....liberals will never be appeased. Trump needs to put his foot down and just hire these people. He also needs to clear these big decisions with e SCOTUS thereby making all those liberal activist west coast judges of the 9th & 11th circuit irrelevant

>Dude Obummer was a marxist I have PROOF!
>>
>>137375
>never makes a peep about nationalizing industry
>he's a marxist
He's hardly even a socialist.
>>
Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
>>
if the attacks were false and misleading, why did he withdraw?
why not prove or at least explain what was false and misleading about those quotes on record?
>>
The whole #FireColbert thing was literally less than 1 week ago. Where were the same Trump supporters to protest this nomination?
>>
What a fag.

>He's hardly even a socialist.
This. He's more right of center than Bill was, half his decisions are right out of the reagan playbook
>>
>>137402
>if the attacks were false and misleading, why did he withdraw?
Because they weren't. He's just a moron who showed his power level in front of a camera.

>being transgender is a disease

Is this wrong?
>>
>>138777
Yes, it is technically a disorder. Diseases have clear causes, such as infections, whereas a disorder is far more complicated, like clinical depression or addictions.

Still, gender dysphoria is a serious problem and I find it a travesty that the only solution actively pursued is bodily mutilation.

That is informative and also I agree

>whereas a disorder is far more complicated, like clinical depression or addictions.
So disorders are bullshit

Show me "addiction" or "depression" in a brain scan. Doctors cannot help because it's just a state of mind. It's just our assumption that these are actual phenomena.

>dude I'm addicted to facebook
Its called "liking" something. Some people like heroin.
>>
>>138887
I am just giving the clinical definition of the two terms. And you are right, it is a state of mind that plays a key role in many of these disorders and is part of why they are so complicated and hard to treat. That does not mean it is not worth trying intervention at multiple levels to help people work through them.
>>
>>138891
The assumption that addiction is a physical phenomenon is not helpful. It gives people an excuse.

I drank my ass off for years until I decided to stop. Now I tell "alcoholics" how I stopped, and what is there response?

>you weren't really addicted

Even AA pushes this bullshit. In their program you have to admit that you're powerless over addiction. That's a sure way to remain a drug abuser for life.

It's totally unscientific pandering for the sake of short term feelings.
>>
>>138894
Once again, a complicated issue has many sources and possible solutions. Congratulations on finding yours and working through your problems. I understand the frustration with the ways things are now, but the idea is that you admit that you are powerless to your addiction in your CURRENT state and ideally will learn ways to manage and overcome it. It is the first step of introspection that shows how much of your life is rule by the disorder and then mechanisms to retake control. I do agree that there are many faults with the one size fits all methods of AA and other support groups. They seem to stop at the stage of breaking the individual down and rely on the individual to drive themselves through rebuilding. Of they were capable of doing that, they would have like you did.

>>138895
So it's like how some people are too stupid for morality, so they need sharia law?
