>"Over our years of research, all of this was frankly a big surprise. This research, so far, has yielded all pleasant surprises, frankly. I never thought that this CRISPR system was going to be working out so beautifully with such efficiency and precision when it first came onto the scene," Kamel Khalili, director of Temple's center for neurovirology, told CBS News.

With the newest advances in genetic medicine, scientists have hit one of the great breakthroughs!
>>
>>136707
Well good now they need to get a procedure down so they can inoculate all of Africa and Southeast Asia, where AIDS is still spreading like it's 1985. Maybe in 20 years or so it will be gone entirely.
>>
>>136707
Pool's open?
>>
Gene therapy will probably be the next huge breakthrough. We could conceivably have biological immortality once gene therapy really gets up and running.
>>
>>136713
Good luck with that
We had immunization and treatments for Ebola and Africans were killing aid workers because of it
>>
>>136766
Too bad it will only be for the rich GATTACA elites.
>>
>>136782
Only for cosmetic enhancements. I imagine that the Healthcare applications will be subsidized by the government. Would you rather pay an up front lump sum payment to remove a disease from a generation or have to pay incremental amounts to treat the disease over 6 decades?
>>
Cure for AIDS, sex changes, AI smarter and more capable than humans... Still no cure for my baldness.

Baldness is too difficult for scientists. Everything else fails in comparison.

>kek
>>
>>136796
It's hard to imagine American's for-profit healthcare system adapting this to serve the poor and chronically ill. I can see China doing it sooner than the US.
>have to pay incremental amounts to treat the disease over 6 decades
That's pretty much the business model of every American health insurance conglomerate.
>>
>>136767
>We had immunization and treatments for Ebola

Completely wrong anon and those murders were exceptional and small cases.

Ebola is infamous because it received absolutely no attention in regards to vaccinations or cures until it already fucked the plagued nation's. That's the thing with tropical disease, they are located in poor countries and companies can't make good money off of it because they are poor.
>>
>>136707
Does this mean I can finally have my 16 black guy bareback orgy?

Seriously though, I hope this jump starts gene therapy.
>>
>>136796
>I imagine that the Healthcare applications will be subsidized by the government.
I could imagine that nightmare coming to pass.

>Would you rather pay an up front lump sum payment to remove a disease from a generation or have to pay incremental amounts to treat the disease over 6 decades?
I'd rather have it kept in the hands of private industry who will insure that the highest standards are kept and people are serviced best.
>>
>>136862
>private industry who will insure that the highest standards are kept and people are serviced best.
Ahahahah that's rich. They will keep standards high only until they figure out how to cut corners and chince someone on the deal for a few extra cents per share on that quarterly earnings report.

Health should never be left to the whims of a for-profit corporation.
>>
Bumping an underrated story.

You'd think this would be bigger news, especially with all the healthcare shit going around in American media right now.
>>
>>136713
>inoculate all of Africa and Southeast Asia

Err, why?
>>
>>136912
that's where transmission rates are highest.
>>
>>136914
>that's where transmission rates are highest.

And?
>>
>>136707
Is this really a great breakthrough? I mean, Im glad we can cure things, but do we really want to cure this? it kills stupid people. and gays, not that i hate gays or anything. but its unnatural and their lifestyle choices isn't really something to look highly on. point is, theirs nothing wrong will a little natural...selection
>>
>>136863
That's precisely why the country with the best medical services in the world has a socialist medical system...oh wait
>>
>>136975
Yes, in fact. If you look at standards of medical treatment, America tends to rank lower than Scandinavian countries, as well as Switzerland, and those countries all have some form of socialized medicine
>>
>>136919
And that's where most people have the disease, so that's where it would have the most benefit.. is there something about this you don't understand?
>>
>>136983
You left out the part about America being the only western country that treat health care like a for-profit industry. It isn't about socialized medicine, it's about American's captialized medicine.
>>
>>136984
but then it'd kill less nigs and chunks
is there something about that you don't understand d
>>
>>137031
You can't cure AIDS without curing the "nigs and chinks" too, silly racist Anon.
>>
>>136821
baldness is not a disease. it's a genetic trait like being a nigger. and when we get to the point when we're fixing undesirable genes, niggerism and the like will take priority. get in line buddy
>>
>>136863
Sadly, some healthcare has to be left in for-profit to give benefit to many people who will rely on medical tourism. Even if the cure is successful in humans, it will be banned due to it being classified as a GMO in those countries. If they can wait a few years, they'll get a generic or poison version from China.
>>
So what's gonna happen with the shithole that Africa and parts of Asia are now that you can't control the population growth with that virus anymore?
>>
>>136850
this exactly
there is no money in eliminating disease
treating them is a billion dollar industry
the medical industrial as a whole could spend billions suppressing true cureall technology and still keep profiting. And they will. Only a socalized medical process would prioritize and this research. see: china
>>
>>137043
>Sadly, some healthcare has to be left in for-profit so that some hundred-millionaire can keep taking even more sick people's money so he can afford to put his 3 undeserving kids through medical school by relying on nepotism and donating the college an extra building*
*ftfy
Don't pretend like there is some noble or worthwhile goal or pursuit at work by keeping it for-profit. The entire rest of the civilized world where it isn't a for profit industry thinks America is barbaric and backwards for not treating health as a fundamental human right, and especially so for supposedly "pro-life" conservatives to call it "socialism". That's beyond humorous into the area of sad irony.
>>
>>137043
>generic or poison version
>"GMO"
I don't think you understand how genetics works, anon. First of all, GMO refers to a genetically modified organism, not the process of genetic modification itself. And you can't have a "generic or poison" version of gene therapy. It either is gene therapy, or it's something else. Now, can you have improper and/or sloppy use of CRISPr? Sure, that goes without saying. CRISPr can be used to change virtually ANY gene. Could someone change the AIDS virus in a way that doesn't cure you, or even makes it worse? Sure. But in the same way that a scalpel can be used for surgery or slicing someone's carotid open to kill them, gene modification is just a means to an end. What that end is depends on the person wielding the tool. Has nothing to do with being a "poison or generic" version, in fact we haven't even totally figured out the rules for holding patents on genetic therapy, and the tools used for this specific treatment (namely, CRISPr and the Cas9 enzyme) are freely available within the genetic research community. Also, some of the most cutting edge research using CRISPr is coming from Chinese scientists, so it's foolish to say that the "generic or poison" version would automatically come from there. The real probability will be that in the future, Asia will be a hotspot for genetic therapy as it may face numerous legal hurdles in the western world. So then the real deal will be coming from China/S. Korea rather than some "generic" version.
>>
>>137044
those places are fucking like crazy even with aids right now .starvation is what kills them
>>
>>137038
Curing the AIDS in Africa would be the worst thing for them. They are like the penguins from futurama
>>
>>137092
Don't worry, they've still got marburg, ebola, tsetse flies and malaria to worry about. They'll be fine without AIDS.
>>
>>136713
>Bunch of geniuses and companies invest time, money, effort, intelligence, creativity, technology to create the next breakthrough
>"Lets immediately give it for free to ethnics !"
You never held a job for more than 6 months and are satisfied with your career, right?
Bernie Sanders of Jill Stein fan?
>>
>>137124
CRISPR is 90% cheaper and takes 90% less time than other methods of gene therapy.
>>
>>137124
>muh white genocide
>>>/pol/
>>
>>136967
Despite the "born this way" slogan there has been little reputable evidence towards homosexuality being genetic. Even if it were it would likely be the aggregate action of many variant alleles which would produce such a complex phenotype. Currently we can only effectively target a handful or alleles at a time with CRSPR. All of the retards arguing about us changing eye/skin/hair color, height, intelligence, etc. have no understanding of the biology underlying these phenotypes or CRSPR as a technology. Right now we can only cure the lowest hanging fruit of single gene/single phenotype.
>>
>>136713
like polio is gone?
like small pox is gone?
like the bubonic plague is gone?
like
diphtheria.
tetanus.
pertussis (whooping cough)
poliomyelitis (polio)
measles.
mumps.
rubella.
haemophilus influenzae type b infections.
>>
>>137376
but damn when the white skin blond hair CRSPR shit comes out do you think socialized medicine should pay for all the nignogs to get their white on?
>>
>>137642
No. That will be cosmetic much like plastic surgery. Until socialized medicine starts covering breast implants it won't happen.
>>
>>137634
Polio and Smallpox were declared eradicated in the latter part of the 90s iirc Anon. You're using really bad examples to make your points. It shows how ignorant you are about science's impact on the world. For all you know space scientists could invent a new, better way to grow vaccine cultures in zero G, only possible through continued funding of space sciences, which include biology.
>>
>>137668
Why would gravity have any impact on that
>>
>>137668
did you even understand my point?
declared eradicated means fucking dick with the anti-vac assholes

e.g. polio:
https://www.nytimes.com/2014/05/07/opinion/the-global-polio-threat-back-again.html?_r=0
>Just when it looked as if polio was headed toward eradication around the world, the disease is once again on the march.
>2014

maybe you should try to understand a little better before throwing ignorant about science around as an insult
>>
>>137668
Apologize!
>>
>>136707
Genetic modification is playing God and is therefore evil, this must be outlawed.
>>
>>136967
>The only way to get HIV is by being stupid or gay
>sex for pleasure is unnatural
>what I believe to be unnatural is also immoral

wew lad
>>
>>136821
>baldness
As I was reading I was thinking you were about to make an argument for the domestic ownership of genetically engineered catgirls. I was disappointed.
