In the long-term, Trump may be the least of our problems. But today, we see Trump slowly becoming more establishmentarian. And that's not because Trump is dishonest or incompetent (although he may be those things as well). It's because the POTUS is not the Emperor of Earth and most Trump voters have fantastic ideas regarding what the US government is capable of doing. When Obama said that being President would itself moderate Trump, I think he was being honest and speaking from his own experience. Obama was a bit of an ideologue until he became thoroughly establishment himself.

Trump is not going to make our economy explode with growth and most of his promises will be watered down or not delivered at all. The Republicans will throw conservatives a few bones with respect to gun rights and abortion.

The problem arises because if Turmp becomes moderate, everything he said during his campaign becomes a lie. We would be better off electing any of the other Republicans or Democrats because then at least we would preserve some degree of meritocracy in our elections.

The practical, long-term upshot of Trump's victory is that our elections will in the future be reality shows and this is going to be a confounding variable when it comes to knowing what we're going to get, liberal or conservative. That is going to be the lasting influence of Trump voters, and of course they're too myopic to understand.
