He can "silently" investigate anything he wants; unless he can produce a smoking gun, everyone is going to treat what he says as half-truth, for good reason.

And even if he could, people will be uncertain what to make of a smoking gun in revealing collusion with Russian intelligence. We wouldn't be having this conversation if Trump's inner circle's contact weren't suspicious as fuck to the point where his national security adviser can be prosecuted as a traitor to the US.

Lastly it doesn't strike me as in Obama's character to have done something illegal to reveal traitorous tendency on the part of Trump's team. He has more than enough tools through the institution of government than to bother doing something he himself could be prosecuted for.

1. It is Blank Slatist (what Steven Pinker called SSM, if I recall correctly). It believes human nature is mostly fluid and can be changed for the better. It lacks what Thomas Sowell called the “Tragic Vision.”

2. The Establishment is leveling–it dislikes hierarchies of merit (for some reason, pop stars and athletes are allowed to be rich, as Thilo Sarrazin noted).

3. An annoying aspect of the Establishment is that It is sanctimonious, always seeking enemies on the Right and bad-thinkers within the left–people who don’t think right and who need to be isolated or re-educated. This is a niche for the so-called Social Justice Warriors. As Steven Pinker said, “Man is a sanctimonious animal.”

4. The Establishment (or the community of its adherents) is cosmopolitan in the way that suburban liberals and childless urbanites are cosmopolitan–it likes the Other, it gets a frisson of delight from proximity with a wide variety of people–but only if it doesn’t have to send its kids to failing urban public schools.

Those who worship at the Establishment think that wars are mistakes, that democracy is the natural state of of any political community, and that we all have many rights but very few duties. Establishment adherents promote the multiplication of “duty-less rights.”

Many social problems arise from people being denied their rights–such as the right to housing, health care, a free education.

Trump has never worked for anyone but himself. he has only ever run a family-owned real estate business. he has never had to listen to a boss. he has never had to wrangle shareholders. he has never done anything that did not make him rich.

Every government official has a boss. Even the President can get smacked around by Congress or any federal judge. Every government official has shareholders to work with (or around). they are called voters. being a government official does not make you money. that isn't even remotely the point of being a high level official. in fact, if it makes you money, that is actually a bad thing!

Trump has never written a law, voted on a law, nor enforced a law. as far as we can tell, he has never read a law, either! He can promise you a pony, but how do you know that he knows the difference between a pony and a crocodile?
