>Italy's taxi drivers staged a sixth day of protests in major cities on Tuesday and blocked central Rome to try to force the government to crack down on burgeoning limousine businesses and the app-based Uber service.

>The taxi revolt broke out last week when the ruling Democratic Party (PD) said it would delay yet again introducing norms aimed at regulating car-hire and car-share schemes.

>Taxi drivers operate under rigid regulation and say they are being penalised by the growth of little-monitored app-based services like Uber, which connect users to the nearest drivers via smartphone, and increasingly popular chauffeured limousines.

>"We don't mind competition, but there isn't a level playing field. These companies don't have the same constraints as us," said Paolo Ricci, a taxi driver protesting outside the prime minister's office in the heart of Rome.

>"We are a public service. We have fixed fares, fixed shifts and have to take any customer, even if it is only a short ride that makes no money. The competition don't have any of these problems and the government must act," he said.

>The protest coincided with a demonstration by market and stallholders, who are up in arms over plans to implement the European Union "Bolkestine" directive aimed at opening up competition within the services sector.

>While one group of protesters closed roads around the prime minister's office, another crowded around the entrance to the nearby PD headquarters. "Mafiosi, mafiosi," the men shouted.

>"Let's work together, but without any violence and threats," said Transport Minister Graziano Delrio, who is due to meet the taxi driver leaders later on Tuesday.

>The government looked to regulate the whole sector in 2008, but the initiative was struck down by the courts. The introduction of subsequent revisions to the law has been repeatedly delayed by successive governments.

CEO whore of uber doesn't care if the worthless cabbies lose their jobs: but teenagers could do their jobs after a few hours training so who cares.
>>

It gets even worse. The CEO wants a certain amount of uber vehicles to be driverless in the next 3 to 5 years. So he wants to completely Cut out the middleman.

Cabbies fault for not innovating and keeping up with a competitor with a better business model.

Good. Cheaper transportation costs are a good thing. Drverless electric cars especially would be fantastic for urban areas, especially low income areas where people can't afford a car but don't want to rely on crummy public transportation.

If you're against Uber or Lyft or ride sharing in general, you're a luddite.
>>

Ha ha. Maybe in a couple of cities for elite clientele …
But it will be a lot longer than 3-5 years for any driverless vehicles to be used widespread. Taxis are subject to vandalism, piss, vomit and other human foibles… and if the robots operate with the predictable inaccurate GPS, they will overcharge and people will not use them. Also, the ‘whore CEO’ is phobic about accepting any liabilty for the errors and dangers in his invention . .. still many bugs to work out in the Uber world.

"HOW DARE THESE PEOPLE GIVE AN ALTERNATIVE TO BEING FERRIED AROUND BY A RUDE, SMELLY FUCK"
>>
I think it's inevitable that the taxi industry will be replaced by driverless cars very soon, but the government shouldn't favor one company in the industry over another. Uber is effectively a taxi service that uses smartphones instead of telephone operators, which is more efficient, however it's still a taxi service, and should play by the rules. At least, until they change the game, in which case legislatures should be paying ose attention to companies like Uber, and keeping up with them in terms of regulation. And likewise, taxi drivers and companies should be making an attempt to keep up with the competition and technology instead of whining that old technology is being replaced by new technology.
>>
I love using Uber when I go out of town. No offense to taxis, but Uber is pretty fucking amazing and good for the economy. These guys need to invest in upcoming city jobs instead of fighting against economic progress.

Maybe they should become electricians or something similar since those tyoes of jobs are growing and you get paid during on the job training.
>>
>Do entry level shitty service job that nearly anybody can do
>Still manage to provide consistently worse service and prices than competitor
>chimp out about competition

Taxi drivers are the fucking worst kind of people.

>taxi industry has laws and regulation imposed by the goberment that cut into your bottom line.
>Uber and ride share services dont.

Idk why they would want Uber to follow the same laws of the industry.

It's kind of like watching mailmen protesting e-mail.

>Your system is inferior
>Demand the better system be stymied to match you

The funny thing? If Uber had the same regulations they'd STILL get the customers. Because people inherently hate the fucking taxis. The only reason they got away with being so shit is because there was no alternative.

Now there is and people will never go back.
>>

Mailmen wouldn't protest email because they get to charge 1000x more for packages that take far less work thanks to email and the internet.

Taxi drivers are S.O.L.
>>
>>114031
no they wouldn't. I can't speak for italy, but here in canada if you want to be a taxi driver you need to get a special license, be registered on a higher insurance rate and have a vehicle inspection done every 6 months all of which is done in the effort of regulation and safety standards. Uber has none of these standards which makes it easier to charge less and be more flexible than a taxi company. Here's a bit of a shocking example of the differences in cost. taxi insurance-1200$ a month, regular driver-150$, licence cost(class 4)-1300$, licence cost(cost 5)-100$. Don't even need to do an vehicle inspection on a private vehicle... Could be driving around without seats and as long you don't get pulled over you can still be an uber driver. Doesn't exactly seem fair to me. I like uber's idea of doing it through your phone and featureing rating, but skirting the regulations undermines the reason for regulations in the first place. i'd be interested in seeing some insurance problems due to uber drivers getting injured while driving or their passengers getting injured.

Uber is uber good. it will be the world taxi like it or not. taxi drivers just need more education on this topic.

>>Cabbies fault for not innovating and keeping up with a competitor with a better business model.

The "Cabbies" business model is perfectly sound. Regulatory capture has been practiced for decades by some of the largest and most sucessful companies. Its also much cheaper and far less riskier than innovating.

>Horses protest amid claims that automobile production is "ramping up".
>Phone booth maintenance men stage sit in against Nokia.
>Paper boy unions call for restrictions on internet. "It's just not fair".
>>

Uber is exactly the same as a taxi service so you comparisons don't apply
>>
Holy fuck move with the times or get left behind people, new technology has revolutionised industries again and again through recent history

It's not the governments place to protect your own job, this is like the local prostitutes complaining about tinder
