>It seems that not a day goes by without the problem of ‘fake news’ making headlines in the United States. If anything, the problem is growing to become an international crisis, in countries such as South Africa, India, Australia, the Philippines and especially Europe, where concern is high in both Germany and France due to their upcoming elections. Like spam, fake news is a global problem.
Something needs to be done about the fake news problem, and a group of technologists, including this author, are taking up the challenge with a competition we are calling the Fake News Challenge (FNC).

In a nutshell, the Fake News Challenge is a competition in the spirit of the Netflix Prize designed to foster the development of AI technology to help solve the fake news problem. Starting today (Feb 1st, 2017), teams are being given a concrete fake news-related task for their systems to perform, along with training data on which to build and test their solutions. At the end of the competition (in early June) teams will be given a new, never-before-seen set of test data. They will be asked to run their algorithms on this new test data, and the three teams that score highest will be awarded cash prizes. The details of the prizes will be announced at a later date.

Right, you're going to change the idiots from believing the lies they "like" to stay in ignorance; and with fake intelligence no less. First you need programmers with maturity, intelligence and responsibility. Good luck, clowns. Just another money grab pyramid scheme.

Time to implement the thought police, no opinions allowed.
We should be free to make up our own minds, sometimes it's just two sides of the same story, but from different view points, and now one of them is em, 'fake'

Surely this can be built into the Google image Captcha.

try to avoid Chicken Little freak outs. a news outlet getting details wrong is not "fake news". reports that you don't like are not "fake news". the National Enquirer reporting on Bill Clinton's secret love child is fake news. completely false stories made up to misinform the reader is fake news. Unless you have a diverse media diet that allows you to compare stories from several different outlets, how would you know whether or not voter fraud is a serious problem, or not? whether most drug abusers are Black, or not? whether there is a conspiracy by global powers to undermine the American democracy, or not?

to most media consumers, these questions are extremely difficult to research and "make up their minds" about. and besides, that defeats the entire point of reputable media outlets. CNN, Associated Press, Washington Post, the Guardian, etc... spend millions a year sending reporters out to chase down stories, sift through first-hand accounts, build relationships with sources, crunch data, and draw educated inferences from apparent gibberish. people go to school for years for this stuff, and these outlets build reputations on years of honest, unbiased reporting. they dig through the shit to get the gems so billions of people don't have to.

the average person does not have the time, resources, education, or discipline to do this for themselves. nor should they.
