If a middle of the road democrat ran on a somewhat tough immigration policy(more border security, fewer more strictly enforced visas, no refugees from Syria) I think they would have a decent shot against any republican even Trump. Unfortunately for them they probably won't get their heads out of their asses on this issue, and potentially popular policies like net neutrality will continue to be ignored.
