The polls were right for the popular vote, Clinton won that by the expected polling margin. The failure came at the state level, where state polls in certain midwestern states failed to show how close the race actually was, those states were treated as "safe Democrat" despite going to Trump (albeit a slim margin, but nonetheless a Trump victory that should have had the states labeled as "battlegrounds" instead of "leans Democrat").
