http://www.computerworld.com/article/3158146/personal-technology/microsoft-tries-again-to-get-people-off-windows-7.html

>Not for the first time, Microsoft is casting aspersions on Windows 7, the highly successful version of its OS that was a nice rebound after the Vista disaster, saying the aging OS is becoming increasingly hard to secure.

>It's not an unreasonable or incorrect statement.

>Windows 7 shipped in 2009. Eight-year-old OS versions are going to be harder to maintain than new ones, no question. And a blog post is a lot less obnoxious than some of Microsoft's previous tactics, like changing the close window icon to one that indicated approval of the install.

>The latest effort is from a blog post published by the German subsidiary of the company, pointing to the difficulties of maintaining the old operating system as compared to Windows 10.

>"Today, Windows 7 can no longer keep up with increased security requirements. Rather, it provides for higher operating costs -- for example, maintenance, lost working time due to increased malware attacks, or even increased support requests," wrote Irene Nadler.

>Markus Nitschke, head of Windows at Microsoft Germany, reiterated Nadler's point in the blog post, adding, "Windows 7 is slowly advancing in years. Already, it neither fits the requirements of the users of modern technologies, or meet the high security requirements of IT departments. As earlier with Windows XP, we recommend that companies should take early steps to avoid future risks or costs.”
...
>>
>Of course, they stepped back over the line of hyperbole with the next statement. "Windows 7 is based on outdated security architecture.

>Companies and users who won’t upgrade from Windows 7 within the next three years are facing enormous dangers."

>Nadler then goes on to praise Windows 10 and the security improvements that are part of the operating system, such as Windows Hello offering biometric login window via fingerprint, face or iris recognition, Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection, which uses behavior patterns to detect malware, Windows Information Protection and Windows Store for Business, which provides centralized purchasing, managing and distributing Windows Store Apps in the enterprise.

>I don't fault Microsoft for wanting to get people moving, because they had such a hard time uprooting XP users. And a lot are sticking with it. The new PC Trends Report from Avast Software found that 6.5 million of its users still run Windows XP, and that’s just from Avast’s user base.

>So long as they don't engage in their previous trickery, a promotional effort is fine with me. Some of the doom and gloom predictions will cause some eyes to roll, but they still have a point.

>I suspect Microsoft forgets how hard it is to move, though. Back when it was pushing the XP migration, I spoke to numerous small businesses who said their reason for staying with XP had nothing to do with getting new hardware but the vertical software used to run their businesses. An eye doctor and chiropractor both told me the software they used would not run on Windows 7 and they would need to buy new versions costing over $10,000. That's a major investment with no ROI because all it does is keep doing what the old version did.
...
>>
>There is a little good news on the Windows licensing front. Taiwan-based DigiTimes reports Microsoft has agreed to lower Windows 10 licensing rates for under 14.1-in. low-cost notebooks that will launch this year. The change is set to come into effect on March 1. The story says that Microsoft's motivation is likely the increased popularity of Chromebooks and the fact that Google does not charge a licensing fee for Chrome OS.
>>
I'm never switching to Windows 10. If it comes down to it I'd sooner switch over to Linux
>>
It's so hard to find a laptop with windows 7 these days, and if you do it's so bogged down with bloatware, takes days to clean out. Fuck Microsoft right in their collective puckered holes
>>
>>101086
If you like it that much it could be worth it to get a windows 7 install disk.
>>
>>101085
>I'm never switching to Windows 10
I would put it only on a completely isolated machine myself. I think there will come a time soon when things just don't run on Win7 anymore for lack of drivers where people will be switching to some form of linux en masse.
>>
>>101122
>tfw Microsoft triggers the wide spread usage of LInux
>>
>>101193
too bad linux still sucks dick though with hilariously poor driver support from every vendor and open source project
>>
I run linux mint and everything i plug into it works fine. Runs windows games too like cod
>>
I upgraded to Win10 a while ago. I like it.
At this point, I think most of the hate comes from how aggressively they were pushing it on 7 users during the free period, as well as the data collection. These are both valid. I've also seen some people complain about further reduction in settings/power user control, but most if not all the things possible in Windows 7 are possible in 10, they're just more annoying to do. Overall, though, I don't think it's that bad.

The thing I'm most concerned about is, of course, privacy. I have my settings configured to opt out of what I can. Does anybody here know what is and isn't collected, even with settings set to the most private possible on Win10?
>>
>>101337
Shill post.
>>
>>101345
>Anything positive is shilling
>People who disagree with me are paid to disagree with me
I wasn't even 100% positive, I just don't hate it as much as everyone else seems to. And that still doesn't answer my actual question of how bad the data collection is exactly. But you don't care about that, you just want to feel cool because MICRO$OFT BAD AMIRITE HUURRRR
Kill yourself
>>
has anyone else tried installing Windows 7 on newly built PCs? It's nearly impossible. Lack of USB 3.0 support combined with no ECHI support means you better not be installing via any USB port. Shit is outrageous. I am in Ubuntu limbo right now
>>
If you are using the computer as a Web Appliance then windows 10 is perfectly fine.
I am a building automation specialist and I tried using windows 10 but it's utterly useless. compatibility mode does not work with the stuff I have to deal with daily. I carry a windows xp laptop with serial ports and a windows 7 pro dell with dell dock for the ports. I also have a external hard drive with several virtual machines, most with XP. upgrading the systems I work on would sometimes take hundreds of thousands of dollars. the systems still work so they don't want to replace. most of the software needed for these old systems are dos based, JAVA based or you telnet in. the java based ones are usually below version 6 and as we all know Microsoft doesn't support java anymore.
at least with windows 7 pro they tried helping us with the XP mode but for some reason in XP mode the 64 bit version does not work with usb to serial converters in most of the applications I need or the old dos based software.

Firmly entrenched in modded 8.1 to get rid of all of Microsoft's dumber features and repairing the start menu. I'm not going to budge until they modernize their privacy standards.

>Win 10 send all your data to MS (and NSA, potential hackers, etc.)
>Win 7 isn't secure enough and could get a malware that send some of your data to hackers

Welp, I'll keep 7, an antivirus, and continue not clicking random links.
When they stop updating 7, I'll switch to linux. It's getting more popular, I'm not the only one doing that.
>>
>>101337
>they are just more annoying to do

Doesn't that make it objectively worse?
>>
>>101115
Not him but there's several different kinds of laptops out there now that have their OS permanently bound to the motherboard, making it impossible to install Windows 7. An install disk simply isn't a solution for some people.
>>
>>101844
WTF! Is there any advantage they have for doing that?
>>
>>101852
Near zero chance that your computer will lose its OS if your hard drive gives out, and you'll eventually be forced to flat out replace your computer if you want the new Windows.
>>
>>101818
>Updating 7.
Congrats you have Microsofts datamining telemetry already.
>>
>>101873
I can see some advantages to that in say a business or industrial setting, but there really doesn't seem a reason to have that on consumer computers.

actually its been proven that if you have Windows 7+ your computer may download Windows 10 and then attempt to apply it as an update

Microsoft will literally push Windows 10 onto your computer, and while you're not looking it will upgrade by itself.

True story, there were people who noticed about 5 GB of hard drive space turned up missing and then it started trying to automatically install it "as an update".

You know I would wonder if the people developing Linux were ever PAID by anybody, regardless for whatever reason.

While it could be seen as a conspiracy theory there's plenty of good reason for a powerful company to commission or secretly fund what appears to be a "open source alternative".

Which can purposefully have a variety of limitations and handicaps in order to make it unpopular, but at the same time deter anybody else from making something custom since "this is already there"

> unix is as old as the hills, but linux and its development as well as popularity are not

While not proven, its suspect. Questions like this should be backed up with investigations.

Also a person may not necessarily be paid directly, but they could have been granted the opportunity to get funding for another project, given a seat on a board, or any other kind of major benefit.

> and on the bonfire ill also add these for investigation:
> Blender (3d modeler)
> Unity3D
> OpenOffice

worthwhile to check, just in case

> if its a conspiracy theory, do your homework and thoroughly vet the people involved to disprove it
>>
>>105850
It's from November ya fag.
>>
do be aware that Microshit also installed Win10's telemetry and data collection on Windows 7 if youve updated it.

basically, if you ever got the Windows 10 prompt, even if you disabled it, you still have the telemetry running

https://www.reddit.com/r/pcmasterrace/comments/3g7hr0/removing_telemetry_from_windows_7_and_8x/

also you can delete the win10 prompt

http://www.digitalcitizen.life/how-disable-get-windows-10-icon-and-notifications
>>
>>105861
Do not take course towards OpenOffice.
From what I gathered in the past about it that it is not being generally maintained.
Their origin developers sailed over to LibreOffice. Which gets a better maintenance.

Thus use LibreOffice instead.
>>
>>105861
>You know I would wonder if the people developing Linux were ever PAID by anybody, regardless for whatever reason.

Almost all kernel developers ARE being paid to do it, whether directly by Linux Foundation, or by Red Hat, Canonical, Google, IBM, or another company that uses Linux for whatever reason.
>>
>>108134
>>105861
Oh, and even Microsoft has submitted patches to the kernel, mostly dealing with virtualization. Linux on desktops might not have significant marketshare(though it does have upwards trend), but in server space it's too big to ignore.
>>
Win10 is an abortion of privacy
>>
>>101337
>At this point, I think most of the hate comes from how aggressively they were pushing it on 7 users during the free period, as well as the data collection.
the most hate comes from
>a horrible fucking UI designed for tablets and shit
>horrendous user/privilige management
>idiotic auto updates that you can't bypass that reset/modify your setting without you knowing anything
>the fact that you have to manage settings so it doesnt download & install retarded shit like fucking candy crush saga on your computer with no prompts from you - and these settings can be reset by some forced, fucked up updates from MS

you have to dig deep and disable a shitton of "features" to make win10 even remotely usable of professional use.
>>
Conputer software is becomming like college textbooks.

Every year they change their shitty product in irrelevant ways just to sell the product again. Of course they leave it imperfect so they can do it again next year.

except textbooks don't steal my personal data all day everyday.

Nice to see people catching on.

No, that was just the icing on the cake there were a slew of other reasons as cited above

every linux distro i install on my asus laptop gives me 'wifi disabled by hardware switch' bullshit. I haven't seen hw wifi switch for about 10 years. and everytime i gotta look for my ethernet cable and google google google.
ended up with win10 ltsb version, love it. no shitty apps, no store, like windows 7, only 10
>>
>>101882
It's an advantage to the companies involved, mostly. Windows and the computer manufacturer have a deal set up that benefits both. They each control enough of the market share that they can get away with it, too.
>>101896
Unfortunately he's not wrong.
>>105861
Interesting theory. I would think Canonical is a likely suspect for that kind of collusion, at least in terms of the top level stuff. Might be worth putting an investigation thread together, or a discord or something. It's probably nothing, though. As for the other products, Blender isn't that bad, Unity is pretty good, OpenOffice has been jewed but most people should be using LibreOffice by now. Still, if you're looking at those poducts for corruption, maybe put Firefox on the list too?
>>108448
The way nu-/g/ is you'd probably find people unironically defending Win10 there too. Unfortunate, but there it is.
>>
>>101080
Fuck you I don't want your NSA ware
>>
>>108499
You probably do have a hardware switch; the fn+F5 or whatever key counts as a hardware switch, it doesn't have to be a dedicated switch for wireless only.

If that doesn't work, just run:
rfkill list
to see which radio it says is blocked (probably 0), then
rfkill unblock [id number] (again probably 0)
