How old were you when you finally grew out of meme cycling and finally started riding an unaesthetic, bland touring bike?
who let the old folks in
>>999779

>>999779
The hell you on about, OP? Bland unaesthetic touring bike IS the current cycling meme.
Probably never. I'll keep racing as long as I can ride a bike.
28.
>>999787
Corrent meme is a 1x rigid steel 29er with drop bars around shoulder height, called "adventure road" bike.
>>999803
Fine, so i'm not up to date with the cutting edge of hipsterdom. I'm still in the fixie bandwagon.
So touring bikes were yesterdays meme.
Also, i'm 34.
>>999779
ur dum
>>999779
probably around 35, 7 years from now
>>999813
What do you base this prediction on?
I don't ride a touring bike because I don't go touring. I have a job and I don't earn nearly enough to take significant time off.
>>999803
You forgot the mandatory front rack.
I'm 26 desu.
>>999779
I need one. I have a long ride almost completely planned out but I don't want to do it on any of mine.
>>999845
Probably the oldest average.
Through who knows with other weird boards like /po/ or /tg/.
>>999787
This
>>999845
No it's /jp/. At least it has by far the highest proportion of early 4chan users.
>>999779
27 hours before I finally grew out of the cycling meme and finally started driving a boring, safe Audi.
>>999845
42 here.
Wrecking that average age.
>>999779
32
>>999779
I'm 21 and I still ride a mountain bike daily, plus I toy around on BMX bikes and a cruiser. The BMX bikes are getting really uncomfortable though. I would enjoy a bland, unaesthetic touring bike if I can get one for VERY cheap (Walmart special or something used from Craigslist?). Then again, I see tons of old folks on cruiser bikes, mountain bikes, etc. At a certain age you will become even more of a memester.
>How old were you when you finally grew out of meme cycling
0. I never gave a shit for a meme bike, it just had to do what i asked for.
>>1001136
I am about your age as well, but I do not agree that the nineties were an okay time.
They were shit.
Everybody needs to take a step back and realize that it was a terrible decade. Then, and only then, can the healing begin.
Any recs for solid yet cheap racks and panniers? 23" frame, 26" wheels btw
>>1001483
Oh, and 29yo, since that's relevant to this thread
>>999779
>Growing up
The day I first rode with flat bars is the day I became a man.
>>1001508
you sure are forcing the shit out of this "meme" huh
>>1001519
Being an alpha male isn't a meme. It's a way of life.
>>999859
/po/oper here, we had a "survey" thread a few month ago on /po/, people are not really old. Origami and papercraft are among the least expensive activities, so lots of people on /po/ are broken, and broken people are often young.
/n/ on the other side... Also i bet trainfag are not the youngest people of 4chan.
>>999779
>He doesn't realize anti-aesthetic is and aesthetic
>>999779
Yeah, let me carry a 50 pound steel bike plus whatever I'm hauling in my pack that day, up to another 20 lbs, up and down the stairs every fucking day.
I'll stick with my 15 lb carbon road racer.
I want to get a touring bike, I fell for the Jews and bought a $900 gt attack from performance three years ago but it's uncomfortable and shitty now that I can do muy own maintenance. What should I be looking for in a used touring bike and what are good brands and models?
>>1001641
> poorfag has no garage
25. Hated my job, built a touring bike piece by piece. As soon as my bike was built I quit and went touring.
>>1001649
I live in an apartment building. No elevator because it was built before we had to pander to gimps.
Just redid my touring build.
>>999779
It's not an either/or choice. Have a few bikes. One for fun and one for urban riding at least. You can have a junk bike to sacrifice to shit weather / winter beater as well.
On any given day, ride the nicest bike your plans can accommodate. You don't see a lot of Cervelos at grocery store rack.
27, picked it up literally yesterday. Mine has a front basket.
Although before that I rode a trek hardtail hybrid so I think I was avoiding memes okay.
Looking to pick up a Santa Cruz FS next summer tho :D

>>999841
The way the front wheel is turned makes it look like an Escher bike.
>>1001730
All good, seen about 40,000 km of North America so far. Hoping to do Utah and Colorado again, most of my favourite days were there.
>>1001740
That's crazy. Are most of the days like there, where there's no one around?
The orange okolyt is my daily and touring ride.
Pic from last winter. Changed front light since and saddle is now at proper angle.
>>1001935
Where?
I like the background.
>>1001722
In the mystical forests and parks of northern europe.
>>1001936
Just outside Bremen, Germany.
>>1001935
I love your bike.
>>1001508
>The day I first rode with flat bars is the day I became a man.
$15,000 for 12 mph average speed

do you really own a rob english bike?
>>1001935

>>1001959

>>1001977
>How much planning would one have to do each day? And how much disposable cash would one need to do this?
You could do it on $25 a day if you always camp. It would be very rough on you.
Planning? You will incredible amounts of free-time to plan. If you need it, there are apps that you can download touring routes onto, then the main challenge is keeping the phone charged
650b tourers, get it right OP
if I see another fucking orange soma wolverine i might snap

>>999845
27 here. I've been a poorfag most of my life, and cycling just kind of stuck. It's nice to have something now that isn't complete trash and can actually stand up to day to day riding and not break after 6 months.
I started with a touring bike because sheldy/riv memes and realized it had way too much utility I never took advantage of, so I grew up and bought a road bike, which is better for the kind of riding I do.
>few years back
>had to go to school on my dad's bike
>my dad's face when he comes home to his bike without that back rack
>>1001666
Very nice, I have the same frame, and a box full of parts, a d will put the bike together next month.
I am 26 and got an alumium road bike. It has fared well so far apart from a loose rivnut on seatpost. I have added more capacity for water bottles and mud guards. All luggage I keep in my backpack. Recently started enjoying longer distance riding and put 28mm tyres on my road bike for comfort.
Is this the tur ing point? Seems like your 2nd to 3rd adult bike is when you go for a bike with more utility.
>>999779
I was 30. Somehow I don't find my touring bike bland.
>>1003094
You are in the slippery slope to 35c
>>999779
My dad still rides a Colnago and he's 64
What the fuck is your excuse?
>>1003091
Awesome! Did not expect to find another Clem owner on /n/. I bought a complete and have no complaints, it's fucking great so far.
I'm 6'3'' on a 59cm and it is fucking massive though. My work has a vertical bike wall and my bike can't use it because the hooks aren't high enough
>>1003259
that's a fucking nice touring rig my man
redo your bar wrap though, looks janky
>>1003395
Thank you!
The tape is Selle Italia's Smootape XL, extra thick 5mm wrap. It's very comfortable and actually looks better in person.
I like touring bikes for commuting because they look a lot less flashy and are more wear resistant.
>>1003094
26 and bought an aluminum road bike 4 months ago.
Love it so much I'm changing my commuting city bike for an OTS racer.
Pic not related.
This might be where to ask it. I have a Specialised Allez and am looking at carrying my luggage without a backpack or racks. I will be commuting and longer rides at a generally slow pace so weight isn't a problem. I already have my spares and tools in a saddle bag and locks mounted to my frame. I would just be using it to carry food and spare clothes/different layers and maybe a map or two just in case my garmin gives out.
If I want to avoid a backpack which would be better - Handlebar bag or frame bag?
>>1003830
I can't really help you but out of interest, why don't you want to use a backpack?
>>1003832
Primarily because when I commute I find that my back gets very sweaty and I get chaffing from the straps.
I have been getting a sore lower back on longer rides, but if I do the same rides at the same average speed on the same bike without a backpack then I don't get the pain.
The last reason is because if I have that mounted on the bike then I have the option to take my backpack to increase my luggage capacity for shopping.
>>1003830
why not just the most basic rack for the back?
It weighs next to nothing and depending on what you add to it it can carry quite a bit
I mean those elastic holding lines or you could even put a crate on it
>>1003841
My bike doesn't have the mount points and I would rather not add p-clamps.
>>1003842
how about those that attach to the seat post?
>>1003844
Would they be likely to shake or move over cobbles? My daily commute includes a mile of cobbles.
>>1003830
Neither, keep your CG low and get a real rack
>>1003848
the more mount points the better in your case. and don't cheap out. whenever I see someone's bag fly off their rack it's because they decided to go ghetto style with a $30 rack and a $30 pannier
of course you could just slow down but where's the fun in that
>>1003830
Rando style.
>>1003830
Soma Champs Elyse low trail fork plus a front rack or bag would be the expensive, classy option here.
DIY frame bags are cool and will cost you around $60. But then what do you do with your water bottles
Old man mountain makes rear racks that don't require eyelets. There are seat post clamps that come with rack bosses too. There are ways. Heel strike is the main concern with this option
>>1003868
Here's the old man mountain road caliper mount
What makes a seatpost mounted pannier better than a handlebar bag or large as fuck saddle bag or frame bag?
>>1001974
Holy fuck it's the school shooter Samm Al-Hyedd
>>1003259
Did you do a repaint of the Fuji touring bike? What year is that?
>>999779
OP i was/is 26 and i am found bmy favorit subgenre of cycle, thank's
>>1003931
>What makes a seatpost mounted pannier better than a handlebar bag
Nothing. Handlebar bags give better handling.
>or large as fuck saddle bag
It's usually lighter and bigger.
>or frame bag
Frame bags give better handling but the wider ones can rub on your tighs. Also they may prevent the use of larger water bottle in compact frames. I guess it's a draw.
But honestly for any serious touring you will have to use all three (handlebar+frame+seatpost bags) so whichever is superior is irrelevant.
>>1007441
absolutely sick bike my dude
>>1007548
>>1003931
Aerodynamics matter when it comes to bags. Bikepacking setups are way better if you don't need to carry a lot
http://www.cyclingabout.com/speed-difference-between-panniers-bikepacking-bags-aerodynamic-testing-results/
https://janheine.wordpress.com/2012/05/02/aerodynamics-of-real-world-bicycles/
>>1007553
True but all three kind of bags are pretty efficient aerodynamically compared to rack panniers. Besides as was stated you'll likely need all three anyways..
>>1007441
we're gonna need moar pics, anon, /r/ing pic without the packs.
Miyatabro reporting. '87 312 here.
>>1001969
12mph average is slow as fuck desu
>>1001483
what rear light is that?
since I got myself my first bike that wasn't an mtb, so 14 maybe.
I'm poor, I think that's the main reason I never got into fancy cycling and never turned into a spandex wearing faggot on a roadie.
"bland touring bikes" are cheap to build, rigid frames don't break and the lack of speeds achievable on a roadie puts little stress on components.
Maintenance is limited to cleaning, lubricating and changing elements that wear.
>>1002873
I know that's silly, anon, but I don't want to spend a lot on a touring bike. Maybe I could check Craigslist.
>>1001483
From the thumbnail I thought the front wheel was a disc.
>>1001483
the Planet Bike Eco racks are pretty decent for the money. I have installed a lot of them over the years, and have only seen one fail.
As for cheap panniers, you can always go DIY and make them outta cat litter buckets.
Or wait for Ortliebs to go on sale.
>>999845
I'm 18
Touring is a meme.
"Adventure" also a meme.
>>1008664
Your mother is a meme.
i had an unaesthetic and bland touring bike but then i accidentally made it aesthetic as fuck
>>1008634
I bet you smell like old newspapers and urine

This is 2014 stock paint. Unfortunately they don't keep the colour codes on file, so I wasn't able to get a sample for touch ups.
>>1008634
what's this style of handlebars called?
>>1008941
moustache bars
>>1008939
just hit the hobby store - humbrol or testors enamel is easy to mix, cost a couple of bucks at most.
that's way nicer than the 2013 - that year had ugly grey metallic and godawful red anodized hubs
