Are the Kato N-scale Shinkansen starter sets good? Edition

Photos, questions, projects, discussion; talk about anything related to model trains in every scale from T to backyard RRs

Previous thread: >>936997

Is this bait? I do agree model trains are technically toys and would fit better into that board, but
>implying you can make thread about trains in /toy/ that lasts more than half a dozen of replies
>implying there aren't far more train enthusiasts in /n/
>implying there haven't been discussions about trains in /n/ for years
So go ahead and report, cunt. The mods aren't suddenly going to stop the tradition of modeltrainposting just because of your butthurt.

That just looks like a normal Euro high-speed train, like an ICE 3 or else. Mind you, that doesn't necessarily mean it looks bad, but it definitely feels more generic and average in comparison to the E5.

Speaking on the ICE 3, anyone here owns the Minitrix set in pic related, or any Minitrix stuff in general? I bought one a few years ago and have been thinking about starting my layout with it, but most of the trains that interests me are made by Kato instead. I heard they're incompatible systems, how to deal with that?

For anyone who is a huge enough weeaboo, Tomix is also getting into the 500 Type EVA bandwagon and will release its own N scale set. It will be limited just like the Kato version but will cost 5000 Yen more

Consider the fact that the 500 Series was actually designed by a German (Alexander Neumeister, who also designed the ICE series) the similarity is not surprising with the exception that the nose, which is a lot more pointier than the ICE 3 and most previous Shinkansen sets

What are some decent planes to be scaled with an N layout, /mtg/? Will something like a Revell 1:144 do alright?

I wanted to build a layout with a small regional airfield, but it's really hard to find properly made small aircraft in that scale ;_;
>>
>>999171
Well N scale is between 1:150 and 1:160 depending on the region, so 1:144 and even 1:200 plane models would probably work fine on a layout.

It has changed a lot since I've been there. Their space is much much larger, and the center piece track (pic related) is still under reconstruction. They've added like 6 smaller tracks, and some tiny ones that have controls for kids, which were cool. It's all still a wip it seemed, so the level of detail etc is low. It was a very nostalgic experience overall.

I know that feeling, anon. Also haven't gotten into building a layout just yet, my current space is limited and therefore I'm just sticking to engine and car collecting for the sake of display, but every time I see a complete layout my heart skips a beat. Hopefully I'll move to a bigger place this year.

Can any fellow Euro N-words point out some God-tier train modelling stores around Europe?

Menzels-Lokschuppen has to be the biggest and most diverse I've ever seen, their HO and N scale vitrines are absolutely staggering. The prices are also really competitive, especially when compared to the internet.

Pic related is only a small fraction of the interior, the store is so big that it covers two facades of the building it was built in. Truly a modellbahn heaven.

I live in an extremely small town and the railroad that goes through Main St. Doesn't have its ballast anymore. So I put the track flat and tried to make it look like rain had pushed or washed all the ballast away. >>
>>1002934
It's not like this doesn't exist on other forums but my issue with the model railroader forums was that you have a pretty big group of the user base that just complains about everything.
>no more athearn blue box
>the hobby is too expensive for my ssi/fixed income
>i can't stand x

Then, when you try to start an actual discussion people just derail (no pun intended) it and almost never offer anything constructive. I haven't visited their forum in years, but I left for a good reason. I'd like to be more active in the hobby these days but playing a lot of miniatures game eats up all of my time. These threads are usually fun, but I'd be surprised if more than a couple anons actually have layouts. Seems like most people here just collect the odd locomotive and call it a day.
>>
>>1002956
To be fair, the hobby has gotten really expensive (or was it always that way). Even if you are buying at discounted prices from places like modeltrainstuff.com locomotives are often at least $80 per unit, and rolling stock is often about $20. Anyone buying at MSRP is a sucker though, and there are usually some pretty good deals to be found on ebay. Thankfully for N scale, new Kato locomotives can often be found for $50 each.
>>
>>1002988
Also, I'm obviously talking about non-DCC units. As an N-scaler I've never seen a need to run with DCC. I don't need sound or flashy lighting and you can run at least 4 DC units together in one train without a problem.

If you want N scale sets, try Bachmann. They are great starters. Lionel is good as well, but O scale is expensive.
>>
>>1003002
>Lionel is good as well
t. Ithiqua in disguise

Lionel is a meme brand for boomers.
And 3 rail a shit. 2 rail is awesome though.
I've seen gorgeous steam locos and then that cancerous 3rd rail. And hiding it by using a black rail is even worse. You're admitting that you're ashamed of it but that you're a lazy, shit tier modeler that can't be assed to convert it. How hard is it to convert to two rail anyway?
tl;dr
3 rail is cancerous shit for faggots like Ithiqua.

>>1002956
>playing a lot of miniatures game eats up all of my time
/tg/? What do you play?
And I have fun here. I don't know what it is exactly. Maybe it's the cynical nature and anonymity. No one can put a name to your posts (unless you're a cancerous name/tripfag, which is why they're probably they're hated so much) and you can't do that on reddit which is why a good amount of us despise the site. And you can say whatever the fuck you want unless it's a specific threat of course. I'm sure I'm missing a lot. If anyone reads this whole rambling mess I'm amazed.
>>
>>1002988
I'm not saying the hobby isn't expensive, but over at the model railroader forums it seemed to be a constant thing people would bitch about when I used to post there. Spending more than $250 on a locomotive seems a bit ludicrous, especially when you can easily use a less expensive ready to roll model as a starting point for a kitbash or conversion.
>no dcc
I get that dcc adds a layer of cost and complexity to things, but I assure you it is worth it if you ever intend on running more than one train at a time or having multiple locomotives on your layout at once. It also cuts down on wiring.

>>1003059
Warmachine and boardgames. 3x weekly. You can definitely have fun on the /n/ /mtg/ threads. The discussion here is just usually all over the place and doesn't often involve much modeling.

>How hard is it to convert to two rail anyway?
iirc toy trains like lionel use ac, while model trains use dc. Might complicate things a little bit. I only am in to model trains though, not toys.

Rather than painting over the lettering you can also use pine sol or simple green to rub the old decals off. Then when you redecal over you will get a cleaner blend of colors. I think if you choose to weather your model it will end upfine as is, though.

Here's a picture. It's a bit late to dig around and get more stuff to take pictures of. Pictured are a bunch of Greenville 100ton hoppers. What do you want to see? I have a bunch of locomotives, and a shit ton of 80s era and beyond freight cars.

I did strip the old lettering off the unit with microsol before I applied the new paint. I think the main problem is that the orange I used to patch the paint spots that were stripped with the lettering (Badger ModelFlex WP Orange) was a darker shade of orange than what was already on the unit.

Here's the prototype, btw.

>>
>>1003453
Yeah, finding an exact match can be difficult. You can achieve the effect of silver fading through and showing the orange undercoat by applying tape before your layer of silver paint completely dries. Always liked early switchers like the vo-1000. They often had some nice colorful paint schemes.

>>1003469
>I'm assuming you're the SP modeler?
Not sure who 'the' espee modeler is.

I don't actually have a gp9, which is unfortunate. My Baldwin is an older prototype I bought a long time ago in the tiger stripe scheme. I'll try to remember to dig it out this weekend. I mostly model 80s-96, so pre merger. No spsf units. I don't care much for kodachrome and I'd rather have scarlet and grey/black and aspen gold locomotives.

My dad recently retired and I'm thinking about helping him finally finish his long-abandoned layout. It's in a pretty sorry state after 15 years of neglect but I think salvaging it could be fun.

What's the best bet for layout control these days? A lot of why it stalled back in the day was because of wiring issues, and I'm thinking it'll be a lot easier to deal with if digital tech (maybe wireless?) could remove the wiring harness clusterfuckage underneath.

New loco today, looks aesthetic AF in that livery. Also a major upgrade on the old Farish 47 with gears that got clogged up easily and full frontal lighting this time rather than the dull old ones and printed on extra lights. Much better quality texture detailing too.

Great taste anon.
>>
>>1032585

It's just the 47 on it's own and a rake of Mk2As I'm slowly adding to every month. Wanted the CC set until I saw it in the cabinet in a Farish trade stand and was bit underwhelmed desu, I didn't realise they were just mixed Mk1s in in the older NSE colours. That said could really do with them releasing some 1st Class ones to the Mk2As.

I thought it was 2 Mk2's and a Mk1? Still, the new Mk1's are nice and they ran plenty of them on the early NSE.

Gerfag here. If you like Menzels Lokschuppen, you also might want to check out Meises MoBa-Center or Modellbahnshop Lippe too. All of them have a huge variety of goods, are very professional and have a very lively business due to their also enormous web presence. Other than that, you will need a good chunk of luck to find a decent store. While bigger cities (>100.000) mostly still have a couple shops, their quality can go from great to absolutely awful. Only a minority of them tend to have a good organized web presence, which is quite important today, if you want to keep your business healthy.
>>
>>1032632
Forgot to add: their prices are mostly reasonable too. And since they tend to dish out lots of special discounts too, the chance that you won't find anything interesting is quite low.

Just reminded me to double check the Dapol Class 50 I was going to get. Turns out it's original NSE and not late NSE as I thought it was ffs.

Reeeee'ing at this lads I really wanted a 50 for my late NSE fleet.
>>
>>1034372
Late NSE will show up at some point; either in the next batch or a special commision.

My Dapol O gauge 08 showed up today. It's the first thing I've ever bought in O (I normally model N) but it was worth it.

Now I just need something to put it on and run with it. The Dapol/Lionhart class B tankers might be just the thing...
>>
>>1034382

It'll take ages though, already a wait until July just for the 50 even come out. Probably just renumber and rename another Farish 47 instead. But that said, I'm seriously thinking about ordering a Revolution Class 92 at the moment and that's going to be well over a year away.
>>
>>1034388
Could always respray it yourself m8; it's mostly straight lines.

What's that, I've never heard that term before.

>>
>>1034406
>What do you suggest I do next?
Second switch, on the frontside, allowing a siding parallel to the rear one, allowing the buildings to sit square-ish to each other. The gazebo is the worst offender of bad scale so maybe it goes away.

Or, you know, do whatever you think you would find fun yourself instead of listening to the internet.

That's N-scale about 3' x 6' right?
>>
>>1034467
I'll still do whatever I think is fun and like. The reason why I asked was to get ideas and brainstorm. The size is roughly 2'x3' iirc

Depend on the brand, some train cars are just swap the trucks and add Kadee coupler pockets, others might require mounting pads to be built. As for locomotives....well, MTH has 2/3 rail convertible engines in their high end line. Otherwise it's you better have a machine shop and know your electronics really well.

UK lads, is there any appropriate stock of contemporary quality to run behind the bachy patriot in LMS livery?
>>
>>1034406
Wooden halt like >>1034560 said would be nice, I'd personally have a station with a goods yard or something. Also tunnels are always good. Maybe a station with a passing loop, I like them a lot.

>>1034765
Dunno lad, I'm more of an ex LNER fan myself.
>>
>>1034765
Bachmann do a 57ft Porthole Corridor coaches, in BR Crimson and Cream they are ex LMS stock so a repaint into Crimson Lake, with a few LMS transfers would do, but Hornby are selling non corridor LMS coaches.
>>
>>1034765

Not really, it's a narrower choice than it should be desu between Dapol and Hornby ones.

My old club layout used a lot of the Dapol ones which are good basic LMS coaches, cheap and easy to modify and add to (lighting, passengers, painted the interior) but really need extra work to look good with a contemporary loco. Not keen on plastic wheels either.

The Hornby ones look better, especially comparing the printed transfers and greater sense of depth in the lettering but the options and small range is poor and the bright silver roofs on the Stanier ones are vomit inside-tier. They look garish irl without weathering.

It's an odd one, but for a change N Gauge is actually much better right now for Big Four era coaches built to the latest standards. The last few years BachFar ones have been GOAT-tier.

Just two more to go kek. Just hope they don't go out of production in the near future because I seem to be grinding Hattons's stock down more than once now.
>>
How do you guys have the space for this? I'd love to get into it but have nowhere to put a big setup.
>>
>>1034949
Doesn't have to be big. Check HO and N gauge forums for track patterns to fit a small space. In a O gauge magazine some guy fit a 4x6 layout in his trailer.
>>
>>1034949
Do you have a coffee table? If so you can probably fit 2 loops of N scale track on it if you're using only 4-axle locomotives and switchers and 40-50' rolling stock. Use Kato 183mm or smaller radius curves.
>>
>>1034949

As in last image post (isn't full length though) and few earlier ones, I just keep two large boards that take up most of the dinning room but can easily be packed up and go straight back under a bed with a dust cover over them. Haven't laid one or fitted the underframes yet but it's easy to move around and still a decent size to run larger medium-sized rakes. Most of my rolling stock though I'm building up for my local club layout that's going on the exhibition circuit from next year or 2018 onwards depending on when it's finished. That's a very large 1.5 x 7 meter one though, so looks fine with full size rakes.

N gauge is really the way forward for small spaces, convenience and mobility as both range and choice of manufacturers are getting closer to OO. Good few options though:

Modular systems are one; quite a few companies and individuals now make them to order or sell their own modular systems in sections. I saw some great ones from traders and bespoke manufactures at the International N Gauge Show earlier this year but they don't come cheap. Best one I saw came fully landscaped and started at £150 ($187 for burgers) per modular section.

Cheaper alternative is build your own one in pieces that are easy to store. Just need to be careful and make sure you get the joints right if there's a lot of sections required.

Finally if you don't want a fixed layout but something you can do more than make a basic oval with, there's always Kato's track system. As with modular options, it's not that cheap, but for a temporary and fully adjustable track system in terms of quality, convenience, choice and the ton of extra accessories on offer it's unmatched. A basic double track oval with passing loop can quickly turn into something much bigger whenever you feel like adding to it.

>>
>>1034840
>>1034893
Cheers, bit annoying that there's nothing too flash to match the quality of the locomotive (those recent K-type Pullmans are amazing) but my budget is frankly more Dapol than top-of-the-line Bachmann or Hornby.

I have the same thing about that, I have a phobia of buying MkIII carriages because it means making every curve a lot longer so they don't get that awful flaring out. If I can see any rail from directly above on a curve, it gets pulled up and re-laid.

This box contains two new locos at the right I bought to play with with my kids. Rather have them learn about breaking stuff on my stuff rather than grandpas. The other engines pictured here are broken and will need repairs. I took two large steam engines in for repair - will see them in like 10 months.

My mom swears that I am missing at least another two boxes of trains.

Neat. Used in HO-scale includes the plentiful and extremely cheap Tyco products, excellent stuff to pick up for kidbreak runs.

Tail chaser is basically describing a tiny loop of track, where the back of the train is closer to the front of the train via the gap between rather than via measuring along the train front to rear while it's connected.

Anyone else have any shunting puzzle yards? I am planning on building a spacesaver but due to never doing track before decided to start with a basic modified inglenook. Posted in wrong thread. The loop is very tight but the loco there can handle it (tested). Will tie it to a mainline that is elevated so that it can run across the setup and have a larger loco drop off cars.

Think I will set up some trees and a pasture. Make some wooden gangway and a building or two.

How much total hill are you planning from the one end to the other?

Ended up using packing peanuts as the base for one small hill and styrofoam for the other. The one in the picture is the foam. Sprayed 50/50 elmers glue/water and covered with tissiue paper to give it that hilly look. More spray and the powder cover.
>>
>>1038877

Got half of it wired up, enough that I could do the puzzle. That is if the engine I was planning on using didn't decide to derail on everything. Found a longer and newer engine and it had no trouble. Probably just need to oil/graphite the old one.

Off to the right going to make a taller hill and a coal mine, have a conveyer that goes over to the rightmost of the three load lines. Working on building wooden walkways around them right now, kind of visible in the back. Tomorrow is finishing up the grass and getting a few trees in.

I would use new engine but it has different couplers than all of my rail cars. So I gotta switch over cars to new magnet style to make the shunting easier.

Pretty pleased with end of day three.

This is not a problem that I will have. The puzzles like the one I am making will be built into a box with a removable plexiglass lid with gasket. The track will slope down slightly leaving the box to allow water to run to where it will do no harm.

Suggestions very welcome
>>

Looks good so far!

Here's one tip for you that I found out the hard way; when laying track, make sure to leave a bit of space between the joins/ fishplates for the track to expand/ contract during different times of the year. I had my old layout in an outside shed & the change in seasons & temperatures would massively fuck with my track, ruined a couple bits...
>>

Yeah shit grows in the sun. Vent the shit out of the sides of that box too or it'll be a nuclear enough temperature in there to fuck with your glue/plastic scenery.
