I recently picked up an old Shwinn Mesa Runner for $60. Looks exactly like pic related but with a different seat and handles. It currently has non indexed thumb shifters and was looking to upgrade to more modern shifters. Its a 10 speed but modern 5 speed shifters are much more expensive than 7 speed ones. Is it possible to convert this to a 14 speed or should I just get new 10 speed shifters? Thanks guys.

You can get 7 speed shifters and adjust the derailleur's limit screws to use them with 5 speeds.

Will this work with the different spacing between the gears. If a 7 speed quick thumb shifter is indexed for 7 speed gear spacing will it still work?
If a 7 speed cassette fits will the current derailleur work for all 7 gears?

5 and 7 speed freewheels have the same spacing. And yes, you can replace your 5 speed one with a 7 speed.

If you do its really easy. Just get a threaded bar of metal (idk what the name is) and 4 nuts. Took me 5 mins. Make sure you tighten each side the same number of times.
