90 miles, biked to & on the iron horse trail in WA. maybe 4,000 ft in elevation total? I don't remember how long it took. I slept in a tent, biked back the next day. 21/f
>>
>>988596
That looks like a really nice trail. 90 miles round trip or 180 miles round trip?
>>
>>988597
180 miles round trip. It's a super rad trail for sure.
>>
>>988600
Nice, sounds fun. Did you do it solo? Do you have any pics of your bike setup/of your ride?
>>
>>988604
I went with a dude that I was dating at the time. I couldn't find any pictures of my setup on my phone, unfortunately! I only took a few scenic pictures and one of my handlebars while I was riding. I was riding a surly crosscheck with two rear panniers and a handlebar bag. I also attached my sleeping bag on top of my rack with a bungee cord. so, my setup wasn't anything fancy. What's the longest ride that you've done?
>>
>>988616
Longest I've done is 189 miles. All in one go, no sleep. I didn't even have a tent or sleeping bag with so I didn't really have a choice. I took some short rest stops though. I want to get into touring but I don't really have the opportunity to take weeks at a time away from everything else right now, so I don't foresee myself doing anything too much longer than that anytime soon. Maybe a 250 mile this fall if I feel up to it. I don't even know if I want to. I love doing long rides but I hate it too.
>>
Haven't really been biking for long, only had my bike since February. School, gf, and work haven't allowed for too many days off to really spend some serious time riding. But my furthest was a 70 mile ride (in my defense, my constraint was time not energy). Pretty pathetic, but I'm not trying to be much but a casual rider. Hoping I can meet some other buckets at Uni this year so I can actually start doing some longer rides not by myself. My uni town has some nice weather 100 mi gravel rides I've heard
>>
>>988628
70 is pretty good for only having been a cyclist for a few months, you've got potential. Set aside a day sometime soon to try a 100 miler. Try doing a 100 miler on pavement before doing one on gravel; doing it on gravel will take a lot more energy/effort.
>>
>>988619
yeahhh, I'd like to bike down to Portland in a day (~200 mi) but I know it'd be equally awful and awesome. I would love to do longer tours but I don't have the opportunity to take a lot of time off either. Where are you planning on doing your 250 mile ride? do you have a destination in mind?
>>
>>988632
>yeahhh, I'd like to bike down to Portland in a day (~200 mi)
I want to do the STP sometime. If only the west coast wasn't so far away. I'm sure it would be a cool route, and to do it in 2 days would be fun, but I know I'd try to do it in 1 just because that's just how I am. And that would kinda take the fun out of it because it would be so tiring. But whatever, I'd be doing it for the accomplishment, not for fun.
>Where are you planning on doing your 250 mile ride? do you have a destination in mind?
Start and finish at home, probably. I want the start and finish to be at the same place because otherwise it kind of feels like cheating if I'm going for a specific distance (what if there's elevation loss, etc).
>>
80 miles. Packed some camping gear on my 90's rigid MTB and tried to get away from the monotony and chaos of city life.
>>
>>988636
That sounds awesome. 90s rigid mtbs are great. I test rode a customer's 90s rigid Marin at the shop I work at a few days ago, one of the best bikes I've ever ridden. It was even my size. I almost want to offer to buy it from the guy. But I already have multiple bikes, I'm running out of room for more.

300 miles up the 1 from sf to almost arcata/Humboldt. Old nishiki, 3 days, cold nights. Chain busted shortened it and kept pedaling. Last day the hub bolts up front got tightened so the resistance broke my spirit, the victory lap turned into me calling a bud to pick me up.

I did a 1,140 km tour from Paris to Toulon, on the mediterranean coast in summer 2014. Probably 8 miles. Average temps range from 35c-42c between May and October, and I'm a 250lb cripple with a bum leg (my kneecap was broken into 2 pieces, my tibia was broken in 8 places, and my femur had 18 fractures from great trochanter down and the whole leg has never healed right so my knee is actually now turned outward and I can spin it about 220 degrees backward now which is a fun little party trick). Suffice to say I have a really hard time biking most days and even after years of physical therapy my leg still becomes inflamed and painful if I just walk about a quarter mile let alone commute. But I still enjoy it a lot, I've lost about 20lbs since starting, and I'm hoping one day I'll be able to do a longer trip than daily commute. I can only stand biking during late fall through early spring though because the weather is so appalling and unbearable here.

haha er what. You know a lot of regular drinks fit in bottle cages right? They're just harder to fill with powder and the plastic degrades quicker. You don't need a specialised elite hydration cycling bidon©™

I wasn't riding long distances ever since I did that one long-ass (probably around 65 km) ride ages ago when I was young and pretty weak and was so dead I worried that I won't make it back home.
I only recently started doing long-ish distances and, for now, the longest one was around 80 km and about 3 hours I think (would have to consult my biking notebook that I don't have here for exact data). But I'm constantly doing rides 60-70 km long as of now, on my _new_ road bike and so that they are more and more demanding.
Cheers.
>>
>>988565
Around 100 miles around my city with about 5000ft of elevation. Took me around 7 hours. I was extremely tired for the last 2 hours before though because it was done on essentially an empty stomach and a spur of the moment decision
>>
Around 400km in 4 days riding around the Netherlands. I'd only been riding for about 6 months so I didn't want to bite off more than I could chew but in the end the distance was really easy.

Cycled from the UK to the ferry then went from the hook of holland to Rotterdam, Utrecht, Amsterdam, Den Haag then back to the hook. Stayed in hostels for a couple of nights then rented a houseboat on a canal in Amsterdam.

Riding from Rotterdam to Utrecht was fun, it was my birthday the night I stayed in Rotterdam so I got smashed with some random people from the hostel. that, plus the excitement of being on my own in a foreign country for the first time meant I'd had about 5 hours sleep over the past 2 nights then had to ride 90km with a hangover. Fell asleep as soon as I got to Utrecht and didn't really get to do anything I had planned. Someone in Rotterdam told me about kapsalon though which fueled my whole trip.
>>
This might be a better thread for this:
How strong a frame do I need to add some stuff for a touring bike?
I have my father's old Motobecane but I'm not sure if that's sturdy enough from what I'm reading. There's no real rust damage or anything, just an old road bike.

I didn't want to pull it out this time of night because after looking at it again, it seems silly to be worried about. It feels plenty sturdy to hold some camping supplies on a couple racks.
Still need to fix the tube shifters though. The cable for the cassette is real loose.
>>
>>989425
It's a pretty crappy bike. The most likely thing to fuck up by far are the wheels. It'd be worth getting a good shop to true them.

They also look like steel rims so i wouldn't go if it might rain because they wont be able to stop in the rain, especially with those old brake pads. Also that seat is complete ass and the cottered cranks are junk.

Also, fuck it, you can tour on anything, it has rack mounts, so go ahead.
>>
>>989429
Oh yeah, it's not ready at all for going out on any real distance, but it's fine for crusing around town. Aside from some new cables from a couple years ago it's all the same stuff as when he bought it with his newspaper route money.

Ride what ya got, fix what breaks.
>>
>>989425

Only caveat with that is the brakes. Those old brakes on steel rims aren't real strong so think twice about rolling down a mountain with a touring loadout. Also you will effectively be brakeless in the rain.

Other than that a nice bike. Take it to a good LBS mechanic to get a service. Bearings, cables, spokes, tyres. Shouldn't cost much and those things will fuck you up/let you down.

Maybe 150k;
Rode out past a small township to the north and kept going through the hilly region, taking a couple dirt roads to make it to off-road vehicle tracks. For the most part, I then walked hills because I had no idea where I was, stopping to talk to people driving through the area. Weather was great all day, and I discovered there's a paved road all the way through that national park down, so I descended during one of the nicests sunsets I've ever seen. I was carrying enough gesr to sleep the night at the top, but with all the car campers around I was hesitant. Plus I didn't bring near enough food for this ride for whatever reason. Instead, rode home through the night on some sketchy roads (in hindsight I should have jumped a fence into a farm or asked someone if I could camp in their yard). Total time was something like 16 hours. I was 23 at the time, male.

It was easy, I went slow.

I want work up to 200 in a day when I have more time.

There's something purifying after you hit four hours on the road, there is nothing but you and the world around you, the bike is part of you.

After eight hours is pure grit, your body is a machine you will it and it goes. Put water and food in, get forward motion out. There is nothing quite like riding a bike.

about 160 miles from fresno to bakersfield, central valley CA. oh yea and Im male and 19 y/o, did a local bunch ride around our peninsula with a whole ton of climbs chucked in to kick the elevation and distance up, one of the climbs is considered the hardest in the state with a few 20%+ pinches. Because I was poor and stupid I didnt fit my bike out with a compact crank and was the only person there rolling standard, definitely showed as I lost the bunch with 40kms to go. Was hard but definitely learned a lot, something I am pretty proud off but should have put more effort into eating on the bike because i bonked real bad.

>How was the traffic? Did the fucks in Jersey give you shit?

Traffic from Camden to Medford area sucked bad. I went way out of my way to get there. Morning commuters at the time too. Suburban insanity

Then I took the bike-lane roads that wrap around Wharton forrest. Mostly 18 wheels and pickups that were very infrequent and most gave me a ton of room, even with the bike lane. That was a chill part of the ride. Eerie how few people you see. I took a piss and changed my clothes in a burned out house.

Greenback to Egg Harbor city I can't really remember but I think it was fine

Atlantic 563 seems like a good idea because of the bike lane but asshole NJ drivers are going 20 mph over the speed limit and some are almost inside of the bike lane. All I could do was bike on an hope nobody killed me. Terrible, terrible, terrible road for a bike lane.

Pleasantville was hood enough to be a little careful. Linwood Bikepath South slowly turns to yuppie town

Ocean City NJ is fine. Bridges are nice. Going north to Ocean Dr was okay but cars were going way too fast.

Atlantic city bike lanes were fine. Not as bad as philly. Drivers are more sloppy though.

Then you ride on the boardwalk and it's awesome

For distance riding the only trailer I've heard anything good about are the bob single-wheel trailers. Two-wheel trailers aren't much fun to pull for any significant distance because they force you to occupy a much wider stance and you have to worry about the trailer wheels bumping into things, especially around corners.

Hey, I love seeing my OC getting posted!
That's my bike, and I took that pic on my longest ride ever.
Three and a half days in the Appalachians (Virginia and West Virginia), 250 miles, and I slept in a hammock 3 nights.
The third day was really nasty hot, and I was wiped from the first two full days.
The ride would have been 270 miles, but I bonked out just after sundown in the town of Shenandoah. I had to work the next day, so adding a night wasn't an option.
I wound up paying a gas station manager $50 for a lift back to my car.
The OP pic was taken at the bottom of Rough Run road, after a great descent on gravel with several stream crossings.
The first two were so shallow I just rode right through them, but the last one was so deep I had to cross on foot and lift the bike up to keep the panniers dry.
Pic related is the same bike on a different trip

Not the guy you're replying to, but I've been strongly considering a trailer after doing a tour with a guy who had BOB Yak trailer (I had panniers).

Pros of the trailer:
>More aerodynamic
We had high headwinds; trailer guy was effortlessly outpacing me on the flats and simply ran away going downhill. Panniers are giant air brakes.
>Can park the bike upright, anywhere
I'm perfectly happy to lean my bike up against something when I'm going out for a spin. But that's harder to do when your bike is heavily loaded, especially when you're trying to monkey with your bags at the same time. Most kickstands don't do a great job either when you have +50lbs of gear on the bike. But with the trailer, you simply place the trailer 90 degrees to the bike, and everything stays upright effortlessly.
>Low CG
Nothing's up high on your bike; nothing changes how it leans in and out of turns or how the front end steers. This is less of a concern on a bike with geo intended for touring... My bike handles fine with a heavy load on it, but I took a spin on the bike with the trailer, and it was *impressively* nimble.

Cons of a trailer:
>Heavy
Probably an extra 10 lbs vs the mass of racks and bags to pack an equivalent amount of cargo directly on the bike
>Easy to overpack
Big platform. Big pack. You need a lot of self-discipline to avoid overpacking if you don't actually need to bring 70+ lbs of gear.

Between the extra weight of the trailer and the fact that he'd overpacked, I outpaced trailer guy up the hills despite him being a slightly stronger cyclist.

>More things to break, different sized wheel
If you're not going far, a patchkit is all you need. If you're doing a real tour, in escalating order of necessity and self sufficiency: Different tube, different spokes, different tire, different hub service tools.

I already own a ton of camping equipment, but none of it is ultralight styled shit, its all bulky and im not wanting to rebuy. I cant carry my tentcot on panniers

>>993038
I understand the cheap or good pick one argument, I guess i should say like under 300$. Worst case scenario, I could have my brother in law fab a custom one for me, he owns a machine/metal fabrication shop. I just cant seem to find a 1 wheel trailer thats big enough. Most of the one wheelers are tiny

Get a hammock & fly.
Fairly cheap, and total weight is 2 lbs (under a kilo).

How do I sleep innawoods alone, /n/? I want to try a s24o or a weekend tour but I'm scared. What if I don't go deep enough and get woken up by some local ruffians or stray dogs? What if I go too deep and piss of some boars?

>How do I sleep innawoods alone, /n/?
I do it all the time.
My secret?

Denial.
Just believe nothing bad will happen.
Problem solved.

Before the hammock, I would just sleep on the ground on a tarp.
Don't even bother with a roof if it isn't likely to rain.

ive done a 240km brevet mostly solo in like 9.5 moving hours (10.5 w stops). also, 13K feet of elevation gain.

110 miles from Brooklyn, New York across the Long Island to Montauk over a weekend. Took it pretty leisurely, was riding on a Brompton and camped out for an evening. I've only had my bike since June, and before that spent about 2 years being extremely inactive/gaining weight so it's a milestone for me.

Did you survive? There are unironically shootings every day in the south side, why would you voluntarily ride through that? Esp if you're white and on a fancy bike

Yokosuka to Kyoto -5 days

Went with a friend, urban camped and internet cafes when applicable.
>>
>>993895
Would also like to add we had to walk up Mt. Hakone roads and we averaged 110km a day.
>>
>>993895
>urban camped

You mean sleeping in city parks and stuff? How'd that go? Did you use any legit campgrounds?
>>
>>993898
It is called urban camping though.

First night was a horse park on top of a small mountain.

Second night was in a small city park.

Third night was in front of a history museum.

Fourth night internet cafe.

Fifth night was a motel in Kyoto.
>>
>>993899
I wasn't trying to correct you. That sounds awesome. Did you run into any problems camping like that?
>>
>>993904
>Did you run into any problems camping like that?

Kind of. We didn't really know the policy for urban camping at the time and we winged it. So were tentative to even do it if it meant braking the law, which it didn't. It's frowned upon to do it, but still within the law as long as you aren't trespassing on personal property.

We ended up getting woke up by a policeman on his bike to warn us at 0500 in the morning, in front of the museum, which we went right back to sleep anyways, only to be caught in a downpour and having all of our gear soaked. Ended up biking 20 miles to the nearest city and finding a laundromat, where we met a man named Miyano and he took us in to house for local Japanese culture and cuisine, and also met his wife.

Once rode eight blocks to get to McDonald's, had to take a cab home.

About 1000km, from The Hague, Holland to Poznan, Poland. It was torture towards the end, my ass, back and legs were numb and hurting at the same time. It was a great trip however, nice view, freedom of an open road and peace of mind because I went alone.
Did it with a few breaks in about 10-12 hours
on a motorcycle
>>
125 miles done on July 16th. I guess it's okay considering I weighed 70 pounds more a year before.
>>
4350 miles over the course of 5 months.

I ride an exspensiveish bike (2K retail with all the junk)

I roll through the negro neighborhoods in the early morning and come back through the latino and white hoods in the evening.

The real gangstas dont wake up till 11-12 and most days I only hear people talk shit.

PS. my ride went bad, I wiped out and got road rash, today rode 60 miles and felt like I had ashtma. I have not rode in 3 weeks.
