Too hot for long rides lately. Too tired to get up early. Too many insects to ride late.
>>
I rode to work in the rain, possibly was hailed on.
The overnight people I was there for had their work truck brake down so I went home.

Hopefully it helped me prepare for my eventual Highway 101 ride.

on the plus side, I got to see water in the wash and I saw a hawk swoop on a bullfrog.

>Aero helmet and a rain cape, what a fred!
Ironically, you're revealing yourself as a filthy casual.

When you get your first time trial-specific bike, you quickly learn an awful truth: no matter how many years' experience you have on a road bike, no matter how hard you train, no matter how long you can continuously sustain Threshold power, as soon as you get on that TT bike, with your forearms down on those pads and your hand gripping the aero bars, bent over at the waist at a 100 degree angle, your entire body just isn't optimized to produce that much power for the same amount of time; you're trading speed for power, and no amount of force of will can make your muscles work at Threshold levels in that body position. So you spend every ride you can on that bike, in that position, trying to get your body used to it, trying to get comfortable producing Threshold power continuously. Even if it means riding in the rain, with your aero helmet on, with a rain cape over you. But of course a total, filthy casual like you would know nothing of this; all you do is 'ride your bike'. You're not a triathlete; you're not a road racer training for stage race weekends and individual time trials. The only time you're going 30mph is downhill. But that's OK. Enjoy your ignorance. You can't miss what you'll never experience. In an ironic way, you're better off.

LOL, I have more life than any three of you combined. Steady, high-paying work, great relationship with a lovely woman, and the admiration and respect of my teammates for the work I do for the team, and my work ethic on the bike. Unlike you worthless little NEET parasites with your thrift store bikes and entitled attitudes, skinny little skellington legs and no endurance to speak of. Really, you're all pathetic, LOL, consider killing yourselves.
>>
>>987779
LOL what would you know about real bikes? The 40 year old rust-buckets you get from Goodwill don't count, they're just refugees from the trash compactor. My Cervelo fits me fine, it's just the way it is when you first start riding one, but again filthy casuals like you wouldn't know anything about that, you can't afford decent bikes let alone special-purpose bikes.

>>
>>987786
Yeah I'll stand by my statement that you have no flexibility and an awfully fitting TT bike. I find it easier to put down constant threshold power when I'm on a TT bike on my forearms.

It obviously becomes much harder if you aren't flexible enough to get to a proper position on the bike comfortably, or even worse have a gut that interferes with your legs while pedaling.

I think I fractured my shin bone trying to make a quick get away from a red light but my shoe didn't clip in and slipped off the back of the pedal which slammed into my shin. Throbs like a motherfucker.

Also got a puncture on this ride. I average about one puncture a year and today was my unlucky day. What a cunt!
>>
>>987927
It was silly of you to try to accelerate before being clipped in
>>
>>987929
Yeah, probably. But clipping in and taking off is (almost) always such a fluid motion and I've pushed hard on take off many, many times before. But I think this time I was just ander a bit of pressure because I went ahead of a car that was waiting to turn so I was in the wrong and needed to get going quick so as not to hold him up.
Karma for me, I suppose.
>>
>>987792
Ah, an adult with experience. I can stop writing inflammatory bullshit comments to piss off the kiddies and actually be real for a minute. Of course that's the only reason I'm even posting in this thread; it's terrible of me but what can I say, I'm as flawed a human being as anyone else is. ;-)

I'm 6'4" and my ex-coach, who is also a physical therapist, tells me that my flexibilty is good, excellent in fact for someone my height, so that's not a problem for me. My TT bike has been fitted properly to me, and I've even made some minor adjustments along the way, so that's not a problem for me either. It's also not a problem to generate Threshold power on it, but I've had it confirmed that it's just inherent of TT bikes that it's not as comfortable as on your road bike -- because, as mentioned previously, you're using muscles differently because you're in an aero crouch, and if you're not all that used to it, you can get fatigued faster than on your road bike. Which explains why 90 minutes at Tempo, back months and months ago during late Base, was no problem at all on my road bike, but the same 90 minutes at Tempo on the TT bike left me feeling like I might need to see an ER doctor, I was so severely fatigued. So you spend every ride you can manage on the TT bike, even the basic endurance-intensity rides, even the recovery rides, just to get more time in on it in the aero position, to get your body used to working that way. It's just another one of those aspects of racing that you can only get by doing it; you can't go to the gym and simulate it or anything other than just ride the bike in that position.

..and of course I'll draw even more criticism and hate on this comment from everyone in this thread, but that's OK, I did come in here just to piss off the kiddies, for purely selfish reasons. I expect no less from 4chan anyway, which is my excuse for allowing myself to be shitty and hateful in the first place. Won't be here to see it anyway. xD

Well each to their own I guess. I've always like really aggressive position on a bike and regularly rest my forearms on the tops for long stretches even on my road bike when riding.

I guess I'm lucky since I love TTs as it's a solo effort in an otherwise team sport. Allows me to channel my autism much better than normal road races.

Was planning to take my road bike out for the first time in a few months to meet a group, but the forecast was for strong head winds both directions. The wind didn't actually materialize so I went out on the afternoon on my rigid mtb. Its quite the shock coming back into an airconditioned building after riding in hot humid weather.

Tomorrow is calling for a west wind getting strong towards noon which will be perfect for riding to the next city 70 km away.

Drink while riding. It's a pretty basic skill.
You should also be eating while riding more than 1 hour. Aim for 40-60g carbs per hour. Include any energy drinks as they will contain carbs.
Don't ask what you should eat. Gels/Bars/Whatever the fuck you like. Anything with carbs.

Got my 8th Strava Grand Fondo of the year out of the way early. Wind was very cooperative today, staying light until the half-way point, then suddenly picking up as I was eating truck stop pizza. 153 km with an average speed of 29.1 kph.

While checking the distance on a map last night I saw this clover leaf that I just had to do a loop of. Its also a strava segment, but very few people have run it. You do have to approach it from the south which is a direction I don't normally come from.

Cool enough to do a 90 km gravel ride this afternoon without baking. After leaving the paved roads 30 km of nicely packed (smoother than new asphalt) clay, then 12 km of slow sandy gravel, with the remainder not too bad.

I took my bluetooth speaker with me and listened music for about 2 hours. This was a "try a road I haven't taken" ride and I found a bastard of a hill about 43 km in. All the steepest climbs around here are gravel.

Hour rigid mtb ride this evening. Missed KOM on a segment by 2 seconds, segment ends well beyond top of hill and I let up too early. The stars need to align for a good time on gravel segments. In addition to wind direction, its best to hit them a few days after a good rain where vehicles have made smooth packed tracks.

I've been watching progress on a new motorway a few km away. Despite running 8 100 ton dump trucks 24 hours a day progress seems very slow. Going to be awesome when it opens, 12 new bridge locations means plenty of climbing.

Do your own thing. Who cares if other people are trying to be fast.

Also there's a limit to no drop rides. If you're a slow cunt and turn up for the fast group in a fucking vest with no helmet on, you're getting dropped.
And yes, this actually happened.

I love this bike a lot. But i was unable to find that kind of frame in my country.

This pic was taken sunday at evening, around 7 pm, during an inter-valley 38km mixed trip. It was about 20 km tarmac going from home valley to neighbor vaelly, and 18 km pea-gravel, dust and a bit of sand in the returning to the home valley through rural slopes.

Rode around Portland OR today. I don't get why people think Portland is super bike friendly. It's so shit, even getting to Portland sucks and it's confusing. Forcing bikes to hop sidewalks and cross busy streets by a freeway. Roads are shit. "Bike lanes" are just normal road shoulders with a cyclist painted on it. Full of debris. I'd rather ride my bike in Vancouver than Portland. Portland sucks.

Thunderstorms all day but I got a ride in this evening. Had a small cat 6 race with another guy on the MUP. Made the poor decision to take a shortcut down a gravel road, which ended up being mud. That road gets oiled a lot to keep the dust down, and the mud on top of oil was like riding on ice. At least it kept me from sinking in and getting too muddy.

Bike thieves around here are using a new tactic to make money. Steal an expensive bike, check the local FB groups for the owner to report it stolen, then approach the owner for a reward.

Most of the thieves seem to be free range kids roaming around at night. Instead of getting 10-20 bucks from a local fence, they can get a hundred or two from the owner.

This morning one thief publicly posted his request for a "reward" in the stolen bike discussion. And one of his buddies was like "dude, delete that and send him a PM".

For an unknown reason, I'm unable to ride fast at all the past 2 days. Can't be overtraining as I took a day off 3 days ago. Nothing wrong nutrition wise either. Thighs hurt even riding a little harder.
>>
>>993517
you have any data? power/cadence/heart rate? see what's changed in the last few days?

How does it feel when you try to ride fast?
>>
>>993519
Cadence averaged around 77, it's usually hovering around 90 average. Lost my HRM unfortunately.

It just hurts more than usual when I try riding faster( can't clear lactate?) as if I've been sprinting the whole ride. Not lacking energy, just hurting.

Was supposed to meet up with a few other people this morning and split into 2 different rides. But all the people planning to do the route I was doing were no shows. It wasn't the ideal weather to run that route since it would be a headwind the whole way back, but not a strong one so I went anyway. Both routes shared the first 28 km, but after that it was just me. Ran into some construction on the way back so I had to detour a little. Came across a guy doing a loaded tour across Canada east to west on a mountain bike. Relatively few do it in that direction because of the prevailing winds. He seems to think it will be easier when he clears the prairies / wind, but then he'll be in the mountains. 149 km total, my legs were fairly stiff for the last 50.

2nd ride out with some new mavic ksyrium wheelset. I really dont notice much difference from my old rs11s. Really though, it's not so much about how much you spent. It's that you chose poorly, so you ended up with a lateral move instead of an upgrade.

50 km ride with a slow group out to tour an orchard, so a long break in the middle. Gravel climb with a 10% average grade to get to the parking lot. Did you take that pic? Here's my humble feedback:

Looks more like landscape documentation than an artistic illustration. There's nothing that stands out and catches the eye. The landscape is interesting and I like the contrast of the the flat-top mountains in front of the peaky mountains, and I like the cluster of civilisation seemingly in the middle of nowhere. I also like the half-basin. But together it all just seems bland and documentary. Plus colour is lacking. The sky is just a sky. And there's a shaddow of a faggot raping my eyes.

If you didn't take that photo then nvm. But I'm sure it would awe inspiringly beautiful standing there and seeing it in reality. Certainly a great view. Just not a great photo, inho.

polite sage for irrelevance.

I went on a scouting ride for a gravel ride I'm leading for a club next week. Club is full of old people, so I'll be lucky if 3 people show up.

There is a Bison farm at the top of the only significant climb of the ride. I also did some other exploring / filling out my heatmap. Toward the end I slowly chugged my way up a 10% road. The gravel was packed gud so I flew down it quite fast. T intersection at the bottom so I tried to keep my speed in check.

80 km this morning, though a few hours later than planned (had to wait for poop). Some nice smooth dirt roads that were actually dry despite the recent rain. I really should have fixed the slow leak in my front tire when I noticed it last week, because it became less slow during the ride. Lasted 1.5 hours before I had to pump it up, when it got down to lasting 10 minutes I gave in and swapped tubes. By the time I got home around noon the temperature was up to 31 °C. Got home just in time for another poop, ran straight for the toilet.

It would seem having a big salad for breakfast yesterday messed up the poop timing. I also had a salad this morning before heading out, so I might be in for a repeat performance tomorrow.

Just did 2x1 km to test a comfortable cadence and I think I should be able to keep 20km/h up for the whole commute.
Although with sweating a lot.
There was some wind (likely cancelled out), probably a bit more than the commute is going to have typically.

I guess it would be much more comfortable on a proper road bike.

Lead a gravel group ride this morning. I went out early and rode for an hour first, doing a 9% and 11% 60 meter gravel climb.

For the group ride I made a last minute route change reversing a small loop since I thought it would be easier, but made it worse going up an 84 meter climb of between 11 and 15% instead of a longer hill with a shallower grade, but steep section at the end. I had only ever gone down that steeper hill, so I didn't realize how steep it was. The other hill's short steep section was under 10%.

I stopped at the bottom of that climb to wait for people to catch up, but it was inside the segment so I got 3 minutes of stationary time on my attempt for that one.

Topped off the ride with one final 60 meter 8% climb before heading home. Lots of 10% gravel climbs in that area, too far to ride from home to get to them though.

I rode 17km to a nearby mountain and then did an 18km ascent of it. Then I did about another 20km descent down the back side of the mountain.

That rear descent was a killer for the first 2km, the whole mountain has concrete roads and on the rear, north side, trucks and weather have stripped the concrete down to the aggregate and it's just pebbles and gravel, covered with a thin coating of mountain skree. It's basically a technical mtb track not a road. I was on a CX so it could have been worse. Plus it's way steeper than the front side, which meant I was riding my brakes, down a steep hill, on skree and spending half the time airborne due to pebbles and shit. I had to rest my hands at the end of that section.

The rest of the descent is gorgeous though and the roads get way better except for speed bumps that you have to bunny-hop.

62km in total, the mountain is a 700m climb.

73 km today, I planned on 105 km but the wind was much stronger so I modified my route. Halfway through this one valley I had to choice to keep going down or tackle a bastard of a 15% gravel climb. I almost always skip it having only gone up it once before on my fat bike. Since I had my touring bike I decided to give it a go and improve my time. An odd feeling being in the drops but it feels like you are on the hoods because of the incline.

Finally managed to KOM a segment close to home. The gravel road was a bit rough and wind not right behind me so I should be able to improved my speed on that one another 8 kph sometime in windy September. The psycho dog near there also must have died so I can start going down a road I stopped using a few years ago.
>>
And good reccomendations for bike lights? (front and back)

They days are getting shorter and my new commuting road gets pretty dim at night. Doesn't have to be anything super fancy just something to keep me not ded.

Most people ride places where it's easy to stop and refill a water bottle, so there's no need to carry more than one. I don't bother with two bottles unless I'm going out for a really long ride, and even then, on a century ride I'll stop twice to refill those.

>Do you like being dehydrated?

Did a 135 km gravel route that's been in my list of routes since February. I wanted to be sure one abandoned road would be dry since a lot of backtracking would be required to detour. The wind was fucking with me on the way back, alternating between NW and NE. So my speed kept going up and down between 22 and 30 kph on a flat road. I had just enough water and food with me, going through all 3.5 L of water, 3 bottles of Ensure and an energy bar. Lately I've been getting back home with over 1.5 L left in my playpus bottle refilling bag.

Another ride or two will put me over 10,000 km for the year.

>>
>>999913

wtf why, how much are you riding?
>>
>>1000064
when you first start of, headwind sucks. but as you progress into racing, you learn that its a large part of the ride. Being able to keep a good speed in headwind, is a lot more satisfying than speeding downhill at 60 km/h.
Give it time, you will learn to love the wind
>>
>>1000064
Heartrate monitor is helpful to pace yourself when going against the wind. Don't even worry about your speed. Getting low helps too.

The fall winds are kicking in here right on schedule. All September 30 km/h + winds with typically only a few non-windy days. Zero wind shelter outside the city. It gets old fast. Sometimes going as slow as 12 kph in the drops when the wind is up to 60 kph. I think the wind noise bothers me more than the extra effort.

The return trip can be amazing though. Flying along a gravel road at 45 km/h in an eerie silence.
>>
yo, Im pretty new to this whole "cycling" thing. been about a week with my first roadbike.
Does the leg pain ever go away?
>>
>>1000254
My personal experience was your muscle soreness will heal more quickly as you get fitter, and you'll be pushing yourself harder before it sets in.
>>
>>1000256
good answer, thanks.
>>
Went out to get the 85 km needed to get me to 10,000 km for the year. Planned a 96 km ride, but the wind was gusting to 40 km/h before I left. Then it died down to around 30, so I figured I'd just shorten the ride a bit. I ended up doing the whole ride, then decided to skip a crappy road bumping the ride up to 102 km. It was hotter than they were forecasting, close to 30 °C. Yesterday's 20 was perfect.

>>1000254
Fully hydrating after a ride can help with muscle soreness. Compression gear is fantastic if you can afford it. If I'm sore after ride I'll put on quad and calf compression sleeves. I ride with the calf on during the winter. Compression tights seem like they would be quite difficult to put on.
>>
>>999913
I do want one of those behind-seat 2 bottle cages.

Any recommendations? Preferably on Amazon or something.
>>
>>1000201
>wtf why, how much are you riding?
A fair way obviously, probably in country without taps/shops.

I ride out to the mountains in China where you can't drink the water without boiling it and anyway there aren't taps around. No shops on the mountain so from base to summit, back down to base, you only have what you're carrying and it's a pretty long way, several hours of climbing in the sun with only the water you're carrying.

I carried three bottles and two cans redbull last time and it was adequate, I ran out near the end of the descent so that was ok.
>>
>>1000254
>Does the leg pain ever go away
Yeah, more or less. When you get stronger then your daily ride isn't enough to build more strength in the same way.

You'll miss it and want to do harder climbs, longer rides to get it back.
>>
>>1000064
>51 km. Is this a goodstart.
You're not going to impress a cyclist but it's respectable. Got to start somewhere.

The brown season has returned, very little green to be seen outside the city until next year. Though it is the optimal time to ride these dirt roads. They are dry and there isn't much rain this time of year.

I use my Trek 520 touring bike with 700 x 35 knobby tires. Currently Continental CycloX-Kings.

The soil here has a high clay content and for the most part those dirt roads are firm with a thin powder layer on top, I hardly sink in at all. When wet that clay is so sticky the roads are completely impassable.

Northeast of town there is a lot more sand which can really suck on narrow tires.

I was riding in some mountains in China yesterday, got to the peak at sunset, watched sunset, then rode down in the dark...not really the plan.

As I was leaving the mountains, some random doges in a village decided that I was dinner and chased me out of town.

Being bitten by random street dogs in a Chinese mountain village is definitely not a good idea so I started sprinting and dropped them at 45kmh.

They got up to my pedals before I laid it on but they didn't quite have the speed to bite me, or they were just barking and didn't want to bite, I didn't stop to check which.
