Does anybody here play train games? They can be either tabletop (e.g. 18XX, Age of Steam, etc. BUT not Ticket to Ride, which is just rummy with a fucking board) or electronic (although - have there been any good one recently? There's Railroad Tycoon, but I've heard the latest iteration sucked. I know of some cheap mass transit sims on GOG, however).

Discuss them here.
>>
i've been looking into Train Fever but I'm worried it won't be worth it
>>
i still play railroad tycoon 3
>>
I still fire up OpenTTD on occasion. The modding capabilities in terms of rolling stock are incredible. One of my fav things to do is to start in the 19th century with omnibuses and then progress through the centuries culminating with extensive tube train networks transporting people at 4000km/hr.

Run 8 Train Simulator has the most realistic train handling physics IMO
>and it has multiplayer! :D
>>
>>986695

Huge 18XX player here, such a great game system with zero luck. Im quite lucky that I get to play one usually once, often twice a week at the local game club. Im actually designing my own game right now, playtesting this weekend.

As for electronic its mostly RRT3 these days.
>>
>>986717
You will never stop playing.
Its the crack of train simulators.
Within a month you'll be sucking dick at a truck stop to pay your electrical bill so you can keep playing.

I played a little bit of Densha de Go in the arcades.

The first time, I didn't understand that I needed to open the doors, and just left everyone standing there at the station.

There were many unhappy salarymen, and the children were late for school throughout the Yamanoe loop.

At best, they had to run a bit over 10 meters to get to the doors.

I can't say that I really enjoyed it, or really even understood it, but I do have more appreciation for the people who run the trains.

Unfortunately the souvenir card that was spit out by the machine was looted from me and used as a spoke card by some moron. It was a 231 type, if I remember correctly, as I know you guys are big on the details..
>>
Played Railroad Tycoon 2 and Gold Edition to death.

RR2 and RR3 are pretty good. I think #3 edges out #2 to playability.

PROTIP: Did you play the Loco-Commotion bonus game available on the RR3 disks?
HOLY FUCKING SHITBALLS does that game make my brain almost explode.
I've done all of the missions except one. I'll have an anuyerism before finishing that.

I think I remember it, since I had RRT3 when I was little, but now I can't for the life of me fucking remember what it was.

simutrans

it's like TTD except all passengers and freight have an actual destination rather than "lol imma just go to the station and go where the trains stops lol" - i.e. turbo autism

especially good if you use the Britain128 pakset - maximum comfy.

I have racked up a lot of hours on Train Fever, most of them while alt-tabbed out in frustration. The game is deeply flawed. Road and rail construction is very clunky and for some reason road can't be built over rail so if you want a level crossing you have to delete track, build the road and then rebuild the track and hope that it is in the correct position to be able to do so, or fiddle arould with overpasd construction which can be an even bigger nightmare. Crossovers don't exist, so for even simple double track junctions you have to pinch one set of track down to a single line. Stations have to be deleted and rebuilt to upgrade them, which with the fiddly controls is a real hassle. Pathing is very rudementary, no logic signals so you cant use more than one platform at a station per route. The game was basically abandoned unfinished, which considering that several of the problems I have listed are very deep seated fundamental problems within the game it might be justifiable if Transport Fever ends up being half decent. The footage looks promising, much of their video time seems to be covering key flaws within Train Fever that they are aiming to fix with Transport. Train Fever though is not worth the asking price.

Densha de Go is top to just calm down ... much like Papers Please and the like.

Densha de D is also fun, but that rubber banding makes it impossible for me to really do anything.

Also played picrelated for a bit, but never got far. Cool concept though.
>>
I would really like if there would be a game similar to train Simulator 2016 with Vetter graphics and not dlc's which are just WAAAY to expensive
>>
>>990087
OpenTTD has proper destination since a few versions ago (though it is still disabled by default for some reason).
I actually find it superior to Simutrans', as OpenTTD's passengers actually take the shortest distance, whereas Simutrans only optimizes the number of transfers, which really fucks up if you build circle lines (at least it was like that last time I played it).

OpenBVE and BVE 5 are pretty good simulators.

>tfw there are so many Japanese rail lines that will never make it to BVE 5.
I know I could just play the old BVE2/4 lines in OpenBVE but its just not the same. Once you've played with BVE 5 going back to the old ones is kinda jarring.

Little piece of trivia. The steam locomotive in this game is a Western Maryland 2-8-0 H-9. Now, I don't know if Lionel ever produced this engine during this game's development, but I found out that MTH made an H-9 in their lineup.

Are there any fun ATC games?

Not train game related, but i'm not starting a new thread for this.
>>
>>1000488

I am an Air Traffic Controller is a good fun game, not a simulator though. There was a US DS release called Air Traffic Chaos which was also part of this series. ATC4 was recently released and received its first expansion as well. The series is mostly Japanese airports (Kai Tak and Honolulu being the exceptions) and is to me on par with densha de go in terms of realism, but still a game.
>>
>>1000405
Steam if you're rich.
G2A if you're poor, or simply rational.
>>
>>1000492
Cool, thanks. I'll have to check those out.
>>
>>990973
Speaking of Densha De D has someone ripped Climax Stage to the internet yet? Or is it one of those "never ripped" doujin games.
>>
Why is it simulators tend to favour mainly british locomotives, whether diesel or steam? Even the fanmade ones. While there is a decent amount of US engines too, there's not much outside of those two.

When'll we see one with some of those efficient french compound locos, for example?
>>
>>1001089

Because the only people that really care about trains in the world are Americans, Japanese, and Brits.
>>
>>1010151

>>
>>1010176
and French?
>>
>>1010247
Not really, they don't really have any heritage lines and preserved locomotives from the past.
>>
>>1012362
Unfortunate, as they had some of the most efficient steam locos ever.

Since I've seen this thread like a week ago I've racked up HOURS on train fever. It's so fucking addictive. It's all I loved about TTD/Locomotion, with 10/10 graphics (which still aren't too hard on my pc, playing on a shitty laptot with little lag, didn't even have to take it to my working/gaming tabletop pc).
