Some of this applies to Rival, but SRAM FDs suck shit. Rival 1x looks kinda cool tho.

Shimano in general just tens to work, the higher tiers just get lighter weight and a bit quicker response. As long as it's set up properly out will function

tfw bought a bike with mechanical ultegra to get into racing but its only in enthusiast tier

Unless someone pays for your bike there is no need to go over ultegra/chorus/force tier. Even lower is fine if you're racing crits.

why would shitmano have 4 basic tier and one entry tier of Deorgay
>>
Hol up, why T F do deorgay have SLX in the middle before deorgay XT Why T F even do that.

Is the upgrade from Deore to SLX a similar jump to XT or is SLX serving some special purpose like Zee?

>>
>>979262
>But the gap between the d and a is just 2 much senpaitachi
Say what? The 4000 Alivio has double chainrings, HTII cranks and features even last Deore group didn't have. If anything, Alivio and Deore is extremely close. It's nine gears vs ten.
Closer than 2x10 SLX and 1x11 XT that actually differ substantially in features and concept.

>puts tenspeed €400 apex at same level as €250 ninespeed sora
Just because it is the respective manufacturers entry level doesn't mean they're equal. Apex would roughly go with Tiagra in terms of weight, finish and features. SRAM doesn't have a competitor for the Sora/Claris/Tourney segment. Microshift does.
Current 105 is also firmly in Ultegra territory. It's even hard to tell them a part from a technical standpoint.

man,its seems like yesterday their RD wa a blastig:DD pos with weak return springs
>>
>>979081
My first bikes had alivio and tiagra a few years back. Now after 5 years i have upgraded to shimano 105 on the race bike and xt 785 on the mtb.

I would say the greatest difference is weight and precision in changing gears. Not worth it unless you are weight wheenie.

Alivio was a really nice groupset, never missed a gear and worked well in -20C. XT 785 is much lighter and an extra gear but really i am not faster either on xt 785 on the mtb or 105 on the race bike.

So physical fitness is really the key. A fit person on alivio will beat a not fit guy on xt 985 any day.
>>
>>979290
I care only about the annoyance factor. I want my bike to be a pleasure to ride and low maintenance.
What's your experience with the groups from this point of view.
>>
>>979137
I know that for cranksets it's Alivio (steel rings) and for cassettes and hubs (steel freewheel) Deore.

i got rid of sram force 22 a while ago for new ultegra 11 speed

i jizzed in my fucking pants first ride

shimano actually shifts
you can change from the small ring to big ring with one finger instead of having to muscle the fucker over

ive put about 500 miles on it and I've only adjusted the RD tension once

I used to have to fuck with the sram garbage at least once a ride

also dropped the chain with sram probably at least once a ride with sram, haven't dropped it once with ultegra

My assessment of srams well deserved unreliability reputation

1. The tolerances for range of correct operation with Sram stuff is way way too tight. Theres more play allowed in the system with Shimano. If tension isn't extremely precise with Sram, you'll get shitty RD and FD shifting and you'll be dropping the chain because of the 'yaw' capability in the FD which can override the stops if you push the lever too much, which you inevitably wind up doing when cable tension lessens over time. Theres play in cable systems no matter what, even just the cable housing moving against the cable stops, cables wearing in the lining of the housing a small amount or cables moving a tiny tiny bit in the ferrules. It might be a super small amount, but it's in excess of Srams tolerances
2. They build shit too wimpy in chasing weight weenie marketing, it winds up breaking, they use shitty springs in their stuff that also loses tension, you can't service the parts either.

Even though the Force group was 2x the price of the Ultegra group, the ultegra group just looks so much higher quality, the components look so much nicer up close and in detail and have an appearance of higher manufacturing standards and higher cost in production.
>>
>>979275
>>979283
yesss, I have a build of Alivio/Deore stuff and those exact cranks, really solid groupset tbhfam
>>
>>979327
You have no idea what you're talking about and it sounds like your SRAM was just poorly set up.

I'm not saying SRAM shifts as smoothly or as easily as Shimano, because it doesn't. I'm saying that your explanations are bullshit.

Athena was also more expensive than Ultegra. I think they just wanted to move away from the feminine sounding Athena to a more masculine name.
