how come there are now civilian submarines?

all they have are those piddly little submersible research craft.
>>
>>977928
If you think reeeeaaal long and hard about this question, i think you will be able to figure it out on your own.
>>
>>977932
a nuclear submarine could do sea floor research, drilling, and mining better than a surface ship dangling things on long cables.
>>
>>977936
Even if this was true, which i doubt, would it be cost effective? The civilian world is all about muh bottomline.

As much respect as I have for the "engineering" crew. They don't really do any engineering other than what you would require as part of a ghetto rig repair as it is generally maintaining someone else's design.

In my country a marine engineer is someone who designs and develops solutions for various marine issues and is a certified marine engineer. Not the ship's engineer

international shipping produces so much pollution. that it makes car emissions look insignificant.

the perfect way for a trade protectionist to get something through. is to disguise it as a environmental bill. tax the CO2 and particulate output of shipping. require ships to drastically improve emissions.
>>
>>978843
They operate engines. Hence the name engineers. Engineers used to refer to the designers, and operators of siege engines. Ship engineers derive their engineer title from siege engine operators. Your engineer derives the title from the designers and planners of siege weapons.
>>
>>979427
>international shipping produces so much pollution.

Compared to what? One ship produces less pollution that the 11,000 trucks it would take to carry each individual container.

It's gotten WAY better in recent years. Most ships use diesel fuel instead of bunker fuel, and all ships draw power from the docks instead of idling their engines when in port (at least they do here in LA/LB).

Once I get my towing endorsement I'm gonna try and pick up a job with either Moran or Kirby
How is working for Moran?
>>
>>988967

Very excellent. I'd say Moran is one of the best all-around companies in New York. I want to Maine Maritime, been with Moran through school and since I graduated. I'm in the New York fleet, pay is great, company is good about getting you off/on the boat +/- 1 day if not on the regular crew change day. Mix of a equipment, a lot of 70s and 80s era wire boats, but also brand new tractors and ATB units.

Company culture is a little weird. Excellent job security, I came in during the '08-09 downturn, and they never tied a single boat up while whole fleets were cold stacked. However, they're very slow to promote from within, opting to hire out for a new opening 75% of the time.

Can't say much about Kirby. Big corporate entity, has it's pros and cons. I can call the VP of the New York/Offshore fleet any time, he knows everybody by name.
If you're interested in getting into a new york fleet, which I recommend if only for the payscales, definitely throw an application at Moran for a mate position. If you come in as a deckhand hoping to move up the ranks, you'll be disappointed. If they don't offeryou a mate job, look to Bouchard, McAllister, Reinauer. The first two have a high turnover, so you could churn out a few years as a mate in the harbor and then try knockingon Moran's door again. Their pay is comparable (Bouchard's is highest) but the company cultures are pretty shitty (Especially Bouchard)

Then I found the tug company I work for now who's US flagged and annoyed the shit out of them until they hired me, or told me to fuck off.. Luckily I was hired

If you can't get a job on a boat, get a job on a dock at least, that way when you go to try and apply again, at least they'll know you've been around boats for a bit

Eu fag here. Us flagged ships that work in us waters don't hire foreigners if they don't have a green card or working visa. Moat of local offshore companies don't even have a passport requirement. They ask for your driver license.
>>
>>993570
Yeah, due to the Jones Act (which is a good thing) US flagged ships have to have a certain percentage of US Citizens, which usually translates to "fuck it, we'll just hire Americans only then". Though I have seen foreigners. Plus I believe you must be a US citizen to get a USCG license (an officer). Add the fact that USCG doesn't recognize anyone else's training or licenses and it becomes a pain in the ass to get into the industry as a forgiegner. But I believe US Mariners are usually paid better than most anyone else. And living conditions are arguably the best.

>a nuclear submarine could drill and mine better than a surface ship.
Not a chance. Undersea drilling and mining requires tons of equipment and large platforms to be cost effective. The beauty in pic related in Maersk Interceptor. She can drill 150 m depth year round in the harshest parts on the north sea. She also cost about $650 which is at or below unit cost on modern nuclear attack subs. Trying to sink things underwater, and make them work, is much more challenging and provides very few advantages over just letting them float.

Yep. I'm not into fish ore marine food but most of the guys are and are fishing like crazy. This type of shark tastes like nothing. It's like you're eating plastic. The sauce is everything. But at this point you could eat the sauce with anything, the small ones are tasty as fuck.
I believe we haven't ordered any frozen fish for provisions since we have plenty fresh. It's a good thing. I remember when sailing in west africa on a tanker all the food was bought from there and was absolutely garbage. We passed every day fishermen who waved at us their catch. 1-1,5m tuna I suppose it was. But captain refused to stop and buy or trade some diesel or gasoline that we had plenty on board and nobody would notice 50-100liters missing for some fresh fish.
Everybody including him had to eat old frozen shit food. Some western ppl just don't understand how africa works

There are 4 hanjin vessels anchored outside LA/LB. They do own a majority stake in the terminal. I havent really kept up with the story. From what I understand the ports won't let them in cause they dont think they'll get paid, and they cant order workers cause they cant pay the workers.

Other than that, it depends on the port and how long you're in it if the captain lets you off. Container ships don't typically get that much time in port while bulkers spend weeks at the dock unloading.

According to my boss, back in the 80s and 90s sometimes he'd have to go pick up crew members from the sugar barges at the local bars and bring them back to their tug before they were about to leave without them

He called us a "full service tugboat company," I keked

Any of you folks have cruise ship experience? The gf works for Disney and just found out they supposedly have openings for mates. She's got it in her had that we're gonna be a sea couple. Im not super opposed to the idea, but I don't like dealing with that many people and MSC is super comfy.

Not to give you any ideas but shit that goes out on cruise shops is not for family guys. Absolute degeneracy. It take a special kind of mind set to resist. And most ppl don't have it.
If your gf is working on one I hate to bring this to you but prob she ran/is running a duck carousel every voyage. I have more than a dozen friends and colleagues that confirm this. Regardless of company. Happens on all cruise ships

>>1017338
>every vessel has gps and radar

And both of those can easily fail. They can also be looked over or improperly used (see Cosco Busan vs San Francisco bay bridge). Imagine a small recreational boat with nothing but a set of eyes and ears on board, lost in a fog bank with a ship bearing down on it. You have to consider these things.
>>
>>1016602
A lot of them do. One of my teacher told me a bit of a horror story about those elevators. On board of one of those ships the crew lost their captain when he was doing a inspection of the ship. They looked everywhere, but couldn't find him. He went to check on a malfunctioning bilge pump after an alarm on the bridge went off. One of the compartments of the ship had already been flooded, and it just so happened to flood the lower part of the elevator shaft as well. The elevator dipped below the water, flooded, and the lift's engine was unable to lift the now flooded cage up again when the captain frantically tried to press the button to go up again. The captain drowned like a rat in a water trap.
>>
>>1017820
>using the stairs instead of elevator in case of emergency
I feel sorry for him, but it was his fault.
>>
>>1017821
I got the impression he just went to check on a standard warning of a pump not working any more. I'm pretty sure I'm never going to use an elevator when there's any kind of alarm, though.
>>
>>1017820
If elevators on ship are same as those on land then there should have a door/cover on top of it.
>>
>>1017837
Those are meant to be difficult to find and use for non-maintenance people.
>>
>>1017824

It probably wasnt even an alarm. Just a "fault" marker.

Like avoiding using an elevator because you know there is a car outside with a blown taillight
>>
>>1017847
But I recall they're supposed for emergency use?
>>
>>1017900
Yes, for emergency service personnel rescuing people from the outside. And I've seen multiple elevators without any kind of access hatch, including the one at my work. Granted, that one only covers four floors. But a hatch is not standard, especially not on small elevators.

Been extremely interested in Merchant Marine ever since i learned about it about half a year ago.

Been looking at applying to SUNY Maritime for deck officer. I've got some questions senpai

1. Overall, is the career worth it?
2. Avg pay per month?
3. Should i just become a deckhand, and say fuck the academies?
4. How much sea time before people get promoted to 2nd mate? 1st?
5. Should i be an engineer instead?

Thanks anons <3
>>
>>1017588
There are a few hydrofoil fast ferries, but it's not economical for big ships.

>>1018146
yes
depends, I made around $90k as a third mate.
no
roughly a year of sea time is needed for each license, so count on at least 2 years, depending on schedule. A higher license doesn't guarantee getting a job as that position either.
depends. what interests you about the job to begin with?
>>
>>1018411
thanks senpai

I want a job that doesnt involve me being a cubicle wageslave. Like the idea of working for months at a time, with long breaks in between. Money situation sounds great, food and no rent is a big plus. Want to go around the world, even just to say that ive been there. Want to make big things move in a control room.

Any advice or other knowledge?

hey shipfags, anyone here get seasick on small seagoing boats?
if so, do you get seasick on cruise ships?
a buddy of mine invited me on a cruise from New England down to Bermuda next April, but if I'm just going to be puking my guts out the whole time I'll probably want to pass
I'm fine on river boats, I can sail for hours with no trouble, it's just motorboats in slightly choppy water that kills me
I've been whale watching on one of those big catamarans and I was fine then until I went inside

tl;dr, are big cruise boats still enough to make you seasick?
