Beater edition.
more like Peugeot edition
Some may remember this one from the troll bike thread, I finally was able to put a road fork and 700c front wheel on it, yet the top tube still slopes forward, perhaps even more so than before. Crazy ass frame.
Also put on some cheapo brakes, they don't work great with v-brake levers but it's a low-speed commuter so no big deal. Handling feels very snappy, pretty fun to ride.

Super dope classic bike. Price is fair, if it's in good riding condition. The fork looks possibly bent but also maybe not. Test ride it and see if it rides well imo. I'd ride it, for sure. Love to have a bike like that.
>>976098
How about you get some bottle cages and some good tyres first. I don't think i've ever seen shit tyres on a di2 bike before.
>>975953

>>976098
>ROAD RACER SLUT
Nice. And I agree, get decent tires
>>976159
It's probably ok, i'd just check that the line of the fork blades does not angle back from the line of the head tube. Also check that the wheel tracks in the center of the fork (also for the rear). If you're good at riding no-hands, that's a good check for a straight frame also. The wheels matching is a good sign. Just don't be too eager to buy it, and scrutinize it thoroughly.

>>976201
Conti GP4000s or Michelin Pro4 Service Course.
Vittoria Rubino Pro III for trainers/cheapies.
Just finished building this on Friday; been riding it around this weekend. The gearing still needs fine-tuning a bit but otherwise rides really nice. I'm not enough of a cycle connoisseur to know exactly what is good and not so good but I know it's a hell of a lot faster than my ~13kg hybrid/cyclocross hack bike.
>>976222
Nice build.
I would peel the stickers off the wheels and go with a different color cable housing in the future. The white-on-white is a bit heavyhanded.
I would also personally have picked up a Jtek Shiftmate and gone with a Shimano freehub body & cogs, just for future availability.
>>976201
I'm sure plenty of people will call me an idiot but I only use gatorskins. I've had only one flat in the past 10,000 miles with them.
>>976233
You're an idiot.
This'll be my beater once the Fredarello arrives.
>>976230
>I would peel the stickers off the wheels
But then how will people know about my expensive (for me) wheels, fampai??
> different color cable housing
Black? Red? To be fair, the pic is overexposed and it doesn't look so overpowering IRL.
> Jtek Shiftmate and gone with a Shimano freehub body & cogs
Considered it but thought all-Campag would be cleaner. What's this about future availability? Is Campag 10 speed going away in the next few years?
>>976239
>But then how will people know about my expensive (for me) wheels, fampai??
Wheels are not jewellery. You buy them to enjoy them. Not to gain social standing. Undress those wheels and make your bike look nicer as a whole. If anyone is interested enough to care about what your wheels cost, they'll know anyway and appreciate the fact that you stealthed them out of respect for the sport and the build.
Nice bike. It just needs those black wheels.
>>976239
>Considered it but thought all-Campag would be cleaner. What's this about future availability? Is Campag 10 speed going away in the next few years?
Campagnolo cassettes always get harder to find the longer the drivetrain has been around. Shimano? I can walk into any bike store and they'll probably have a selection of 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 speed cassettes. Same goes for the freehub bodies. It's just easier in the long run.
New project. 1971 P-15s Schwinn Paramount. So far I have striped the paint off the frame and forks. Deciding on color. Any suggestions?
>>976249
What did you use to strip? What was the process? Was thinking of stripping a frame and the clearing it
>>976252
If it's a steel frame citristrip from wal-mart is what I used. You just brush a bunch on and wait 30mins. The paint curls up and you scrape it off. After that you wipe it with a neutralizing agent.
>>976254
Forgot to add don't use it on garbon. I am pretty sure it will fuck up the frame. I only have steel so that's all I've researched. It doesn't harm chrome. Can be used indoors as it claims the fumes aren't harmful. I still did it outside. It works a hell of a lot better than sanding for days
>>976249
Sky blue
>>976230
White cable housing looks nicer than black on that bike; while it's still clean at least.
>>976259
I already have an opaque blue '74 le tour and a pearlescent blue '74 Italvega super record. Was thinking Violet, kool orange or copper-tone.
My beater isn't in a rideable state
>>976260
Spoilers: cable housing comes in a wide variety of colors aside from white & black.

Cable disc brakes because beater and metal pedals as cba changing shoes when I get to work.

>>976375
The BB5 are not. The BB7 were the original sceptic-converting disc brake. The BB5 has never gotten anything but hate.
>>976369

>>976375
>>976378
This guy is right >>976376, all single piston calipers are dog shit. The only difference with the BB7 is a slightly different pad and you can adjust both pads (which you can do anyway with the BB5 by using the barrel adjuster).
There are only two reasons to use cable discs, you're poor as fuck or you're using drop bars.
>>976369
I don't know Seattle, are there steep hills there?
>>976385
Tektro has started making cable discs that actuate from both sides - Spyre SLC and perhaps others.
Have not used them, but anything is better than single-piston...
Just finished the building my budget winter bike. Still needs a lot work (drivetrain, studded tires, less spacers) still, but it should do the job when the blizzards start.

25+kg of steel! I once hit a shitty placed steep kurb at very high speed at night, not even the slightest dent in the rim. Also glorious 7 speed rear hub that has always worked very well and needs no maintenance at all. Casing around the chain also works very well to keep it all clean and makes it require no maintenance. 10 years of abuse by me and many more by previous owner(s) and it still doesnt squeak. I understand for derailleur bikes a chain casing is difficult but why dont fixie riders have one? Probably purely for aesthetics which makes them impractical hippies desu.
I own a roadbike too but for commutes and general rides <20km nothing beats this.

>>976482

>>976484
No such thing as "suicide shifters".
Your bike just has normal downtube shifters, which are easy and safe to use.
Stem shifters would be the most likely to be called "suicide shifters", as using them involves raising and shifting your center of mass slightly to one side, which ranges from awkward to dangerous.
>>976602
They're also more likely to impale you in a crash.
>>976369
Your gearing is pretty close to my ss mountain bike...
>>976375
>mechanical disk brakes
No
>>976602
>No such thing as "suicide shifters".
A suicide shifter is a front derailleur operated by a small lever directly connected to the cage and running up along the seat tube.
What the hell is this dumb board? For some reason when I saw there was a board dedicated to transportation I knew it would be a bunch of autists jerking off over trains and grandpa bikes. I swear I haven't seen a single fucking thread about cars. This is just pathetic.

Huh.

GIS seems to have a lot of them on single-ring setups. Any particular reason for that? Seems nonsensical.
>>976653
Oh wait.
They're on what look like half-step gearing, not single ring.
wtf is going on here?
>>976385
>>976630
I thought the TRP Spyre recently justified mech disc... better than BB7
>>976484
those are downtube shifters you fucking downtuber
>>976661
As I said, the only justification for running those instead of hydraulic is if you're using drop bars.
>>976369
Paul, thomson, Chris King(?), all on a SS surly.
I don't know about you man. Seems like a lot of cool choices and a lot of $$$ for a low functionality bikeu
>>976661
yes, if you can get spyres always get them over avid BBs, as the set up on spyres is easier because it's a twin piston brake, rather than a single piston on the BBs and you even have to adjust the 2nd brake pad on avids after every ride,
also there isn't much price difference between them, also if you can HY/RDs are also a good choice if you can't get spyres.
>>976664
not really as you can get TRP hylex's which are drop bar hydros or you can get gevenalle brakes which are modded hylex's with shifters for either road or mountain mechs.
>>976668
Hylexs are gonna cost you like £70 more than Spyres and would mean running barend or DT shifters, and I'm guessing the Genevalles are even more expensive. So yeah, Spyres would make more sense for some people.
>>976677
TRP HY/RDs are a good middle ground as they are hybrid mechanical hydraulic brakes, and are about £100 a wheel sometimes less if you knew where to look before the pound took a nose dive.
>>976710
>TRP HY/RD
Just as expensive as Hylexs but at least you can thin use brifters. Still not as good as full hydros though and personally I'd still go for Spyres.
>>976653
Looks cool, I'd run one.
>>976652
The bar tape is Brooks leather in honey.
The handlebar itself is a stock alloy bar that came with the bike.
>>976677
Hi, I own both Sypre and Hylex brakes
The Spyres are great - waaaaaay better than BB7s or other single-piston cable-operated discs.
The Hylex brakes are super nice, hoods are long and ultra comfy, but they're the most frustratingly *@#$^%@ing hard to bleed hydraulic discs I've ever used. Holy shit, why the fuck couldn't they have put a normal bleed valve on the caliper???
I pride myself on doing all of my own work on my bike, but I threw in the fucking towel and paid the bike shop $25 to bleed them for me when I had to shorten the rear brake line.
>>976763
Interestingly a few images on Google show the Hylex with a normal bleed nipple and the hose attached to the the side of the caliper with a banjo fitting, no idea why they're not all like that. Next time you take them in to get bled ask the shop to swap them over, or do it yourself.
>>976777
I just checked 3 sets of these, and all of them that my friends and I own are done with a compression nut and a fill plug, like in this picture.
>>976813
It turns out the ones I saw were all stock photos, likely the same one just rearranged. I'm guessing it was probably a prototype or something like that as there are a few other minor differences. You can tell by the cutout around the plug that the originally intended it to have the banjo, I wonder if it can still be fitted or if they changed the threading.
>>976777
>>976813
See also http://theruckustestteam.com/2014/07/15/its-the-little-things/
TRP/Tektro does all of their brakes with a banjo fitting on one end and a compression nut on the other. On the MTB brakes, the caliper is assembled as shown in >>976777 with the compression nut up on the lever end. But the Hylex lever uses the banjo fitting to keep the tube tucked under the hood, and the only good place to put the compression nut on the caliper is where the bleed nipple is located.
Just so they could not have to stock more than one brake hose kit for their various hydraulic brake offerings... very cheap of them.
No idea why they didn't just replace the banjo fitting with a bleed nipple instead of a plug.
I don't think they've ever actually sold them with a double-banjo hose, that's stock photo likely shot before the product was finalized.

Very, feels similar to a bullhorn bar and I spend most of the time on them. I have my hands lower down on them so most of my hand is still on the flat bar and then my thumb is wrapped around the horn, that way I can still reach my brakes and shifter.

It's between orange, white or violet.

>>977217
The fork rake is very Motobecane/French as well. Can't see the bb but it either has the original French or Swiss cups (dependent on age) with a newer spindle and hopefully if they converted it correctly 15/16 bearings.

super sweet. that honey-brown leather is looking nice. due to that I'd go either British racing green, maybe an earthtone wine-colored red, or a rich butter-cream color. the frame is the star, you want the paint to be low-key.

The problem with BSOs is not that they are particularly slow. That's up to the rider.
The problem is that they are fragile pieces of shit.
My brakes are going on my next beater bike, but since this is my only bike now I guess it has to be my beater too.
>>978017
It's not even necessarily that their are fragile. They can be decently durable, or fall apart on the first ride - there is no way to know, because there is no quality control whatsoever in the manufacture or assembly process.
Aside from that, the main problem is simply that replacement parts are usually not available or compatible with real bike parts. When your plastic walmart BB shits the bed, that's it. You're done. Buy a new bike.

This will be a good thread to show some "interesting" things i've done with some accesories of this bike.
In this pic, a 6-years-old cateye velo 5 odometer in the stem. The odometer worked, fine but plastic shit were fucked up at all and the electric contact points too.
The "thing" in which the cateye was mounted was fucked up (just plastic). And the electric contacts between the cateye and "that thing" there fucked up too (the metal points never pop out when pressed). So i welded the cables directly to the electric contact points of the cateye and put a connector in the middle of the cable in order to unmount when required. After that i took a plastic ring and filed down in order to perfect the fitting between stem and plastic ring, and between plastic ring and cateye with welded cables. Finally a piece of tuve rubber to avoid slipping and a red plastic clamp as you see. I cared to do the welding in the way you still can remove battery with fucking up the welding and even mounted rear setting button is easy to access.
There are a lot of other things like this in my bike.

sometimes is hard to say if there is 3:x1 pm or 3:x7 pm (x is any digit between 0 and 5) when you read what time is it in the cateye because the clamp, but it's only a Little detail. You can see the speed with no problem.
Well, you just have to cut the red clamp to unmout and service it, but it's a Little detail too.
>>979457
Someone droped a heavy metal tool in the frame and scratched the frame paint. No problem, 3M reflective "band aid" to the rescue. At least 3 or 4 of them in the bike because the storage place is not enough good.
Love my bike gets me to school everyday no problem
>>979469
And as you can see here, reflective 3M band (the same you buy for trucks and busses) red (rear) and White (front) is placed in order to make bike more visible in night. Even the toolbag has reflective shit. Also there are 1 rear position silicone light and a front AA-batteried light.
The rear rack is made of aluminium covered with rubber to avoid the slipping of the selfmade steel nest installed over it. The stainless steel nest make easy putting annoying loads like sleepbags. The nest also increase useful Surface of the rear rack.
The rack can resist off-road in light loads, but i try to avoid off-road all i can when using it.
>>979471
>>979473
Here you can see a Little old-tire-made mudguard to protect wires and front deraileur against mud and dust.
The rubber in the chainstays is from old tubes.
>>979475
This is how a added a bottle cage in the down tube. Tested off-road with 750 ml of water, and in-road with 1 lt of water.
>>979478
And the bottle cage of seat tube.
I know this shit can endure offroad with 1 Lt of water, but due the frame dimensions is possible to put only 250 ml bottle. No significant wáter volume in that thing, so i converted a 250 ml nestea bottle into a cage for storing Little stuff like batteries, some extra tools for long trips, and stuff like that.
>>979479
The plastic attatch for toolseatbag was fucked up in no time, so it was replaced with a Steel one. No more problems.
>>979478
Why didn't you just use 2 hose clamps
Not only did I fuck up the photo with the shitty angle, but I also just noticed that I ruined by not posting the bike on the drive side.

I have a question about your lights and rubber bands: Are the lights fixed well in theirs postions? or are they capable to rotate respect the center of the place you attached them (seatstays or handle bar) if you pass over bad shaped terrain without reduce the speed? It looks simple and great.
>>979495
Well, two main reasons for do it with heavy plastic clamps instead hose clamps:
-first, the hose clamps works in a good way if you use them over circular section tube. This downtube doesn't have a circular section at all. If you use a hose clamp, it will "touch" the downtube's section "harder" in some places and "softer" in other places. Try to imagine a hose circular clamp arround a triangle-section aluminium downtube (like botleg eclipse frames you can see in internet). That is an exaggeration case, but works to see the problem. So heavy plastic clamps offers a more uniform downtube "strangulation" for non-circular section, in order to dont damage the aluminium frame.
-second reason: it would be required a very long hose clamp or 2 joined hose clamps. The section of hose clamps were are the screws was designed to circular sections. So, no matter the rubber i put there, that curved steel thing will pass through rubber even the frame itself while tighting the screw.
>>979471
My sister had a bike like that in 2005. She sells it (and other unused bike we had) in about 60 bucks in bad shape. Those were good bikes, i still remember them with love. ;__;
Well, another pic. Here you can see a shitty setup made of thick steel wire mounten over rubber again to put the air pump (black plastic in background "zefal france") and the defense weapon (350 grs stainless steel bar covered with 2 layers of tube rubber). Before this, both (pump and wepon) was mounted only with velcros but they were slow and noisy to extract (in the pump case it doesn't matter). some times they fall out the bike but not too often. They was in top tube.
>>979593
Detail of onehanded-"click and take" selfmade system do not steal. Easy to extract the "wepon", not too easy to put it there again.
Street dogs are a serious problem here.
>>979558
I couldn't handle a job where I had to help people. I work for the government so I can "help" people.
The new bike is built, but the wheels haven't arrived yet. The shop loaned me some spares for now.
>>979597
Dentists do help people but it's at great fear, pain and expense. No one likes going and a lot of them are probably sadists.
It pains me that a slow new roadie with fucking spds is riding this. How many weeks until you upgrade to di2?
>>979597
In the past I've always found Pinarello's design philosophy & aesthetic direction to be profoundly loathsome, but that one is pretty slick. The red/black colorway is boring, but the paint is nicely executed and the old exaggerated Pinarello curves have given way to cleaner, more subtle lines.

>>979599
Serious problem for motorcycles and bicycles.
Considering that the concept "street" involves everything which is not a home yard, "street" dogs live in streets but in hills sometimes. Street dogs can be agressive and they are smart. If they see a weapon in your hands they pull back but stalk you anyway. Hill's dogs could be even more agressive niggas.
Point: every piece of land here has its owner, a person, not the goverment. All this place is under severe legal property speculation due to population boom of last years. Sometimes plp develop farming in their lands. So even the nowhere hills has owners whose protect them against "guests" like thieves, bikers and "occupies" (plp who stablish inside your property and in some circunstances [law 2695] they can become the legal owner of your property without paying you, to live in it or sell the land to anyone else). To avoid guest they have heavy guard dogs, and sometimes they escape to the hills too. Sometimes the nature is just inside those lands so you access that lands in order to access nature. In that cases, wepon is very useful too, not only "to show" it to them, but use it to infict pain to the dogs avoiding their aggresive behavior.
it's common too that people drop their pets in streets when they get bored of them, like trash.
>>979611
No. Just show them the "wepon" while riding and it works almost always.
SeatBag doesn't slip over seatpost anymore.
Bought this one for cheap cause my bike got stolen and needed a new one quick.
Not bad though for only $400.
Disregard pedals.

Lonely dogs are common instead packs. Is not about crush them with the bar, is about dissuade them.

This is another good shit. Those are PVC/rubber fabric bands used to make these boats http://www.ribsforsale.com/images/boats/main%20pic%20of%20ex%20military%20boat_l.jpg . They are good for avoid punctures. They can resist plant spines, glass, edgy rocks, glass-alike little rocks and those wires enough hard to penetrate the tire. They cannot protect you agains nails, screws and other metal garbage. They are very cheap and lightweight. I put them between tire and tube, 2 rounds. That's all.

>>979650
I was searching for this. This is a jeans bag which uses the free space between brakes/shifter cables and the headtube. This was "handcrafted" as well as the velcros to attach it to the handlebar (only two in pics, 2 more needed, thinner than the two in pics). I use it to carry even more water (2 bottles, 1lt each one), and other stuff. The idea is to load compact and "heavy" things in this bag, so i have more space in aluminium rear rack for clothes, sleepbag, tent and soft things hard to compress and store like jackets. Maybe it could be a good idea to add reflective fabric to the bag.
>>979666

>rewrapped bars in brown and got a somewhat matching saddle. Not sure if I'm digging it though.
I love that color brown for trim, generally. but speaking as an artfag, I don't think it goes with that frame, if I'm being honest. browns are too earthy, this bianchi colorway (or usually any race-y colorway) is sporty. usually a matching saddle and wrap on race-style graphics and colors has got to be black--or white, but hard to pull it off and really only totally works if you do the cablehousings, too. Or you could do a black saddle with celeste wrap or yellow wrap could work with your particular frame since they're using yellow where usually you would see white paint for accents. that might be _too_ much yellow but it'd work better than brown, anyway.
/unsolicited advice.

was not aware that Lotus made a bike with entry-level/casual componentry. makes me wonder if the frame is hi-ten crap or a nice double butted cromo like their usual stuff. even if the whole thing is crappy, it's still a p. great bike for $20, I don't mean to sound overly negative.
>>980063
I don't think you remember the exact number correctly, but 5XX CrMo and what I can see of the decal means it's Reynolds. the numbers look pink which might be a good sign but those don't usually start with a 5, though. it's certainly better tubes than the components indicate, for sure. you got a deal, yo.
does the frame actually fit you?
>>980087
I'll have to check when I get home, then
>>980087
okay, so i got home and took a look at it and it actually says Cromalite 503, not 503 Chromoly, my bad. and yeah it fits me. If im being /completely/ honest it's a touch on the small side but i like my bikes like that anyways so it's basically perfect
>>980142
>>980087
i found a little stat sheet on it here. looks like nothing too special but it was only $20 and looks like it just rolled right out of the factory
Made in Japan too, not Taiwan, which im assuming is good for the time it was produced
What's a beater?
>>980180
a bike you can beat up on. maybe a second bike when your other bikes are nice racers, the beater is what you ride around town and aren't afraid to lock and leave. but it could be your only bike. could be a total piece of shit. could be a good bike but old and fucked up looking. maybe you fuck it up on purpose to deter theft.
>>980148
so Chromalite is a Tange-made tube, but it only seems to have been on Lotus frames since that's all the results that come up. anyway, that's a great frame for $20.
Also learned Tange is Japanese and therefore pronounced something like "tong-gay." I'm no expert weeb but I assume the "y" is prob passively pronounced, not exactly like the english "gay", but like the "ge" in "get" but stretched out longer?

If they've got flat bars then they're not replacing the entire groupset, just the brake levers and calipers.
>under $200 for a TRP cable actuated dual piston setup
>$800 to switch to RS685
>Yeah I think I'll stick with my hy/rds that work fine
Like I said, if you've got drop bars then that's a reason to get them. If you've got flat bars then, as I already said, you can get decent hydros for the same price.

Where do you have your pump stored? In case of a crevaison, do you use CO2 or a normal pump??
Still building it but here's the headset and stem that cost more than the frame.
>>981265
Are you going to leave the frame raw, with no painting? It's not such a great idea
>>981267
It has a clearcoat over the raw parts.
>>981269
You know clearcoat doesn't protect against rust right?

people say that clearcoat is porous and will let bare metal oxidize under it. clearcoat is supposed to be a finish coat over regular paint.

My beater is an old huffy roadside cruiser. I use it to get to work, get groceries, and I even took it mountain biking once. After years of neglect I recently did a major overhaul on it. Replaced the entire bottom bracket assembly and installed a new one piece crank, pedals, and chain. New rims with a beefy sturmy archer s1c coaster brake installed. Replaced the split leather on the seat. Cleaned/polished most of the bike and then coated it with a microcrystalline wax and protecta clear on some bare metal areas and most of the hardware. Debating whether or not to redo the paint or just apply wax every now and again as I kind of like the worn/rusty look.
