I started riding my bike to work rather than driving. This is the commute I take on the way home. Google Maps says it should take 45 minutes, but it takes me about 30 minutes. I'm not sure if I'm doing a decent job based on the elevation change, but 4.5 miles x 30 minutes means I'm only going an average of 9 mph which is pretty slow.

The weird thing is that going TO work, I'm mainly coasting down the opposite of this path, and it takes between 15-20 minutes to do it. It seems like it should take more than twice as long pumping up hills vs. coasting down them.

Do you have traffic lights and stop signs on the way? That probably accounts for it.

Yeah but it's the same stop lights there and back. It just seems like going uphill for 5 miles with a few pretty steep hills (one is a 1 mile long 8% grade, and a few half mile long 6% grades) should take way longer than 15 extra minutes

traffic lights change their light lengths based on time of day.

Also is there a traffic difference between commuting there and back?

the traffic doesn't have any effect. I do not drive in driving lanes, I always am on the side of the road or in a bike lane.

I actually like the red lights because going up a few of the hills I can get a quick break
