So what's the deal with Philly's trolley system? How exactly did it manage to survive bustitution? Is it still being expanded or are plans still being made to expand it? And are there any plans to replace the PCC's with modern articulated LRV's?
>>
Wasn't the story so such that it survived intact all the way to late 80's, the it got downsized substatially and in early 90s all but the routes relying on tunnel sections were closed.

Meaning, it is a fant shadow compared to what it was only few years ago. It survived the danger years in the 50s unlike any other system and out of nothing they let it all burn.

Kind of infuriating, really.
>>
I spent a day in Philly and didn't see one train. It's probably dead.
>>
1. The subway portion solved a lot of problems with congestion in the streets, with the added benefit that they couldn't run buses down there.

2. SEPTA was created relatively early, so by the time that the private operators went bankrupt, the city was able to take the reigns.

3. Large portions have actually been abandoned/bustituted, it's just that the (meager?) remnants are still pretty good by North American standards.

Will they modernize the fleet and introduce articulated trams or are the PCC's here to stay?

As I was saying. Even if the system was even larger before the 50s, it still formed a coherent and purposeful network up until 80s.

I wonder what the black lines are. The implication in legend is cut-and cover trolley tunnels, are they in use or abandoned now?

Oh, and someone somewhere said that the routes 23 and 56 are still nominally in existence, as in mothballed and the reopening has been periodically proposed. The catenaries have been removed, but the tracks can be seen in google maps and they are quite intact.

>I wonder what the black lines are.
Market-Frankford and Broad Street subway lines
>>
>>955223
Damn, I didn't realize it was that bad. So green are the only streetcar routes left? What caused them to ditch the others?

If I'm not mistaken, the black lines are the rapid transit routes, and yellow/purple are interurbans.

I cannot fucking stand that

1) You cannot work for SEPTA unless you are a grade-A cunt.

and

2) Holy mother of fucking God, WHY, during the week, must the blue line turn into a magical fairy Night Owl bus instead of just keeping it fucking running.
Fucking buses, Jesus Christ. I'd rather walk all the way back from Fishtown than fuck with them.
>>
A lot of people didn't like the trolleys because they ran on narrow streets. One double parked car or big truck and you're late for work. The buses were a godsend. The 23 car runs in Chestnut Hill as a special.

Jesus Christ, can people not read up on the basics of Philly transit before posting misinformation. Philadelphia's bustitution of trolleys is nothing unlike what happened in Boston or San Francisco, and better than the fuckup of Rochester NY. Subway-surface transit tunnels ensure the preservation of that localized network only.

>>955252
Short answer is maintenance. You cannot run a 112-year old line without regular maintenance. New York has duplicate express tracks to provide night service.

>>955233
More Cars paralyzed surface operations to the point of non-operation. 3mph service might have worked in 1900, but not in 1980. Eventual deprecation cycle of the trolley infrastructure by the time of public takeover would have meant prohibitive costs to rehabilitate, whereas the bus network was already very developed that it could easily take over for the remaining trolleys. 15 and 56 were the only routes wide enough to provide semblance of a dedicated lane, while the 23 was and still is the highest-ridership surface route yet lacked any dedicated lanes to warrant resumption of service. The 15 was able to resume service in 2005 due to easy connections with the subway-surface network and carbarn shops, and the route serving tourist attractions like the zoo and casino as well as gentrifying neighborhoods. The 56, while very extant, is too isolated and doesn't have high enough ridership.

They're mostly not PCCs (only run on the 15), they're 1980 Kawasaki-built in-kind replacements with top-notch reliability. ADA requirements is the main driver forcing SEPTA to modernize ahead of refurbishment; the PCCs are presumed to be mothballed as maintenance of outdated parts is cost-prohibitive. SEPTA is looking at suitable articulated low-floor sets like the new TTC sets to replace the fleet by early 2020s.
