That's just the way it looks on the photo. I think it's the little fin thing the Shimano brakes have underneath the brake arms that makes it look that way.

The brake levers are actually pretty awesome once you get used to them. I didn't want to use the XT derailer, but it was the only way to get it to clear a 36 tooth rear sprocket (there are a ton of hills where we live)

10 speed indexed dura-ace downtube shifters are the shit though.

I bought this bike used but it had a major design flaw. There was extreme brake shudder with the original cantilevers. The fork would oscillate violently.

I read up on the problem, and mini-v's were a solution. So I sprung for some $20 Tektros. They were basically nonfunctional garbage. They required more cable pull than standard levers, even though they were marketed as mini-v's.

Then I met Paul of Paul Components at a bike show, and explained the problem. He verified personally to me that his brakes are designed for standard pull levers. Setting them up was a breeze, and they work like a dream.

Next is wiring up the dynamo and fixing the cable routing job.

Most of us are trying hard with our bicycles. You're in a PYBT. Maintenance, repair, training. I am proud to try hard.

As for being insecure, being a name-caller on 4chab might be more associated with that particular trait than owning a nice leather saddle.

>*tips cycling cap*
>>
>>932920
she took it out in the mountains yesterday and did a 1000' descent without any issues, and said it was comfortable, so that's good enough for me.

The bars are nitto north road, flipped upside down. I like it because riding by the levers is nice and upright, but riding in the 'hooks' is somewhat aggressive (not quite like drop bars though)

I'm not sure if your comment was meant as a positive or a negative.

>>932693
how do you adjust indexing on a rd with no barrel adjuster and downtube shifters?
>>
>>932987
Not him, but it's possible to do it manually (you just need lots and lots of patience) without any barrel adjusters (and then you have to do it again if the shifting ever comes out of adjustment, lol) .

But I think it's more likely that shifter is just being used in friction mode. Friction shifting with a cassette, chain, and derailer designed for indexing is smoooooooth.
>>
>>932988
thats true in my experience for a 7 or 8 speed drivetrain but 9, 10, 11 the spacing is too close and you don't get that positive engagement 'thunk' when you hit a gear

Soma guy here. I haven't had to cross that bridge yet, but she's got a multitool in her kit. Right now it shifts perfectly. I realize that the cable will stretch, and it will need adjustment.

If you shift into the smallest cog, and then re-set the tension from there, it shifts perfectly.

I would like to add a barrel adjuster in the future. I didn't realize that the XT mech didn't have an adjuster when we bought it.

>>932992
The Dura-Ace 10sp shifters don't have a friction mode like my older 600 DT shifters do. Indexed only. I wish they had a friction mode, so that when it does eventually go out of adjustment (probably far into a long ride) you could just switch to friction. Right now, we're going to just have to deal with manually re-tightening the cable. Not ideal, but not the end of the world (yet)

My Francesco Moser i got for 175 euros last year, about to paint it fresh, change all the wiring, got some sounds coming out from bottom bracket, guess I will fix it while taking the bike apart, biggest problem with the bike is the hub body, it often skips tooth inside the body resulting in a empty spin on the pedals until it catches the teeth again, hope you understand what i'm saying. Is it possible to fix it cheaply or better just order some new shimano 7 speed cassette hub body? Also the rear derraileur is not going to the smallest cog and is bent a bit I think, is there some alternatives on 7 speed rear derraileurs with short cage? Besides those little problems, the ride is very enjoyable.

well, I'd do some googling before I rode it.

It seems all I can find is AVA warnings. Mostly due to the metallurgy being off with the cast alu. I've got the whole bike apart so I will check and keep the warning in mind. Thank you kind anon
>>
>>933772
ya, I've only heard that term in reference to AVA, so probably it's OK. It looks exactly like it but obv the metal itself is the issue.

the seat already looks to be a Brooks, and well broken-in, too. why replace?

really nice bike, great condition.

I like the blue. How do you like straight bars?
>>
>>933543
I think pedals would be more important.
>>
>>933829
Before having this fixie i don't think i rode more than 24h on a bike all my life (not counting learning how), so my control is not the best. With those flats i can maneuver much better than with a Bullhorn, my daily route is cramped at some places making them much more helpful.
That said, they are not good for speeding. The frame size doesn't help either.
>>
>>933414
Dat rake. The track stem looks kinda silly. -7 degree stem with a flat bar or lower riser would look way better. Besides that it's a dope bike, would ride.

>>933819
Just looking at that bar makes my wrists hurt. There's no way that bar can be more comfy then a bar with plenty of sweep. What's up with the valve on the front wheel? Also nds fail.
>>
>>933965
>There's no way that bar can be more comfy then a bar with plenty of sweep.
I need to pass through places i wouldn't be able to with the original bar size.
>What's up with the valve on the front wheel?
It's a blue light that goes on with impact. It rained and it's not working anymore, it was really cool.
>>
>>933965
Also what's a nds?
>>
>>933966
>>933968
Nds = non-drive side. Always better to take photos of your bike from the drive side.

You can always use a saw to shorten riser/flat bars to whatever width you feel is necessary for tite gaps. No need if your wrists are okay with that straight bar tho.
>>
>>933964
I've never tried bullhorns but they look uncomfortable. Keep riding dude. You'll only get better. What's wrong with the frame size?

Adjusting your speed to braking power available isn't exactly rocket science.

I've been riding brakeless for couple of weeks now. Had a front brake on all my earlier fixed gear bikes but since the current fork hasn't been drilled here I am. Having to rely on rear brake only means I have to approach situations at a lower speed to be able to stop if necessary. It's silly, but I guess I could argue that I'm driving more safely. Won't do it tho. Need to drill that fork asap. Riding brakeless is slowing me down. Also makes situations I can't predict way more dangerous.
>>
>>934154

>>
>>934471
>didnt understand the comment about risk compensation
Dude, if you need to take the brakes off the bike to force yourself to ride safely, you're completely beyond any hope. Using that bullshit to justify your brakeless idiocity is frankly so retarded that you should be prevented from breeding.

If you'd at least used the 'looks cleaner and I never ride it anyway' excuse you'd have come out of it as just unsufferably pretentious and not pants-on-head retarded.

The post you quoted was my first in this thread. I'm not saying it's smart to ride brakeless. I didn't even try to justify it. If I skid underneath a bus while waiting to install that front brake then tough luck. Wouldn't hold my breath tho if I were you. Since I don't ride like an idiot with a deathwish. When I have a proper brake on my bike I will be going faster in certain situations but I still won't be riding like an idiot with a deathwish. But I guess that's too much for you to understand.

imo for that reason alone it's better to have a break regardless of skill.

It's probably different where i live.

It's an old '90s mtb. All I did was remove unnecesarry parts and stickers and put a freewheel single speed and slicks. No point in doing a paint job if it costs almost as much as all the parts, eh?

The only reason to go SRAM is a weight weenie build with Red, or if you really like DoubleTap. The yaw FD is a pain to setup, and SRAM stuff is a lot less reliable than Shimano/Campy.

Shimano 105 + Campy Shamal wheels would be my recommendation. Getting a great wheelset will provide far more upside than shaving a couple hundred grams on the groupset.

If it were my personal bike I'd go with Campy Chorus, because I like the feel of Campy so much more than anything else, but it's an expensive option, and can be hard to get support for from shops if you don't do most of your own work.

you need to slam that stem btw
>>
Shit image but I brought it from the 90's to 2000's. Replaced rear wheel, entire drivetrain and cables just last week.

>The only reason to go SRAM is a weight weenie build with Red, or if you really like DoubleTap. The yaw FD is a pain to setup, and SRAM stuff is a lot less reliable than Shimano/Campy.
I have SRAM for a weight weenie build and I pretty much hate double tap, especially that thing it does in the biggest cog.

Yaw is by far my favorite feature of the SRAM group. It's not as fickle as the long-arm Shimano FD, which has the multiple pull ratio thing, and does not have slack in the low position so you can't adjust the low and high positions independently, which they did to reduce lever throw. The gap between high and low is pretty much set by cable pull, and lessening the gap is asking for cable rub. It also forces you to use the trim when you downshift, because it downshifts to high-low instead of low-low. I don't care how well it upshifts, that's an annoying feature when downshifting. Yaw, once you get it set no trim no rub.

There's quite a few aluminium bikes already posted (basically anything with non round tubes and welds is almost certainly aluminium) and I think I counted at least 6 carbon frames. The steel frames probably outweigh the aluminium, at least when it comes to road bikes, because they're so cheap and plentiful.

Posting carbon to up the count.

2009 Scott Aspect 40. It's good but I wish it came with disc brakes.

I get the itch to upgrade from time to time but I'm saving for a motorcycle and this thing is still serving me well, I'm learning how to maintain it as I go.

I mainly ride on paved bike trails like a savage because no mountains. If I ever replace it I'm thinking either cyclocross or used 90's mtn bike, I wish I had a rigid. I always keep my front suspension locked. Also a steel tube road bike would be cool, I wish I had an ugly but functional beater for roads.

I love them too, the first bike I posted (the black/yellow one) has bullhorns that I've fashioned from a flipped and chopped mtb riser bar and some short bar ends and it's unorthodox but I love it.

I would have kept the pursuit bars on the other one too but the carbon bars are nicer and way more comfortable than I thought they were going to be

You might enjoy the ride more if you make the seat and bars level with the ground.

Ride it into the ground. If you are loving biking but annoyed by the bike being slow/needing too much maintenance, upgrade

Both my family and my friends ridiculed me over wanting a new bike. I have an old (will post again in the next thread) trekker that I commute on for the most part, but dream about a light bike to go fast.
I have doubts about it myself, though and don't know if I would be at peace with myself after going thru with it against everyone and not making a good use of the new bike.

>>
>>935152
>>935156
so the top tube must be horizontal then, because it basically keeps that same angle

oh wait, its fucking not, you idiots
>>
>>936112
That's because of the frame, not the stem.
>>
>>936113
the stem still ends up rising though, whatever it says on the box doesn't matter when you put it on the bike and it still sticks up like a hard pecker coming out of the head tube.
>>
>>936112
>>936114
Just because the stem ends up pointing up does not make it a riser stem. By definition a riser stem is one in which the centre of the bar ends up being above the centre of the steerer clamp, and a drop stem is the other way round.

For a stem to be truly level in the horizontal plane it needs to have a drop complementary to the head angle (for example if the head angle was 70 degrees the stem would need to be -20 degrees), but because that angle would vary depending on the frame stems are not defined as rise or drop in this way.

Yep those are trigger shifters. I'll make sure to work on the angle of the seat and handlebars. I've read that you're supposed to make an almost complete extension of your leg as you're pedaling. So that's what I was going for. Seat hurts the Gooch. That's why it's tilted a little low
>>
>>936572
>Yep those are trigger shifters.
Pretty sick combo, triggers and drops like that.
How are you downshifting on extended breaking?

The seat shouldn't hurt your cooch, tho, but I might be unable to help you with that, Maybe get a new one in a different shape, with some cut outs or whatever?
Cheers.

I thought NBA players could afford nice stuff?

anyhow, the components are all bike-boom era entry-level tier crap, but for $35 who cares. I couldn't find much about Mikado online. it was a Procycle brand from canada but I guess they gave it a jap name since the jap bikes then were really desirable.

can you tell me what kind of steel the frame is made from and if it is double-butted? maybe written on one of the decals on the seat tube. if the steel is good it would make sense to upgrade parts, particularly since a vintage frame that big is more rare. but if it's Hi-Ten gaspipe crap, just enjoy running it into the ground.

cool color. I like how the lugs are trimmed out in gold pinstriping. could I see a pic of the headbadge, plox?
