My dad is building an airplane out of carbon fiber. AMA
>>923596
How old are you?
>>923599
30
Cool,my dad is building a plane out of concrete and platinum.
>>923607
Those aren't very efficient components.
Wow that would be fantastic.
BTW my dad is building a plane out of glass and chewing gum.
>>923627
But it's true! Cost him about $300 000 so far.
>>923631
Has he crashed yet?
>>923651
Been flying since before I was born. Just one close call when I was inside my moms belly.
The gas tank switcher was not working when over the appellation mountains, but then it started working.
>>923651
No, that's scheduled to happen after the fuel system isn't checked for his first flight.
>>923653
He's very methodical about the whole thing. Everything is to code and he has (or had) someone helping him. First few flights are like 5ft off the ground.
>>923596
How much of your inheritance will you receive in the form of carbon fiber plane scrap once he inevitably crashes and dies?
>>923674
He knows what he's doing. He had a piper arrow when I was a kid. I've been to Florida so many times I don't even like it anymore.
Post pics
>>923712
I don't want to give anything away, sorry.
Fine OP, I'll bite. What plane is he building? And don't give me any "the one with wings" shit
>>923720
It's a secret. But he has spent over $300,000 on it so far.
>>923720
The one kind out of garbon
>>923720
It's got 2 seats in the front, and a bench in the back so it seats 5. Jabiru 6000 engine. Called by the inventor (who's only built 1 or 2 and never a 5 seater) a "fold-a-plane" where the whole fuselage is made flat and then folded into place.
It's also got a "glass cockpit" computer dealy with a virtual terrain.
I've got this "test" piece of the main strut (forget what it's called) that weighs less than a pound but can support 1200+ lbs, and that part is mostly fiberglass with 4 carbon rods, 2 on each side.
>>923734
Oh, it's also got (just for me) two joysticks, one on either side of the front
>>923734
Is it a Jairbu or does it just have a Jairbu engine? I'm assuming it's a light sport aircraft, too. Frankly, I think I'd prefer round dial for such a small VFR aircraft (and I fly with glass all the time). They display trend information better than glass, not that you should be fixating inside anyways. Any pictures of the build?
Post a goddamn picture
>>923763
It's just a Jabiru engine. This plane has never been built before.
Pretty cool f a m
How much would he be willing to sell it to ISIS for?
>>923992
Why? Are you a terrorist?
How many tons of dynamite can it carry?
>>924032
It can just about carry your mom, so do the math.
>>923652
>appellation mountains
am i not getting the joke
>>924093
Its not a joke. He just sucks at spelling
>>924212
Appalachian
I wasn't far off.
nobody impress?
> Carbon fiber
> Not Reynolds 853
>>924970
You have no idea how light it is.
>>924257
yeah your dad is really cool m8, now go away
>>925034
lmfao it's my thread M88. You go away.
>wet layup
>no autoclave cure
>no vacuum debulk
>not incorporating fiberglass or kevlar

Just read SAAB of Sweden has invented a radar that detects stealth airplanes or any stealth vehicle without any problems.
So now stealth aircraft/vehicles have no advantages at all anymore but only disadvantages due to their stealth design making them less maneuverable.
>>925123
So when are we getting the lasers?
