Best thing about my ride today was that my phone rang in the middle of it - a friend of mine gave me a lead about what could be a ridiculously cool gig (bike-related AND it pays well?!?). Wish me luck /n/.

I've been getting in 30-40 miles in everyday this week including today, taking advantage of a mid-winter warm spell. None of my recent rides have been anything epic, just little jaunts with plenty of variety, the goal being to keep my fitness at least moderately intact over the winter months.

Most of this week has been a bust for riding. A couple days of crazy winds, and two days screwing around redesigning a website. The one ride I did I cut short because my bars were off enough I'd just end up with a sore neck. I should be able to make up for it on the weekend with decent weather.

Tomorrow its getting up to 1 °C so my aim is 100 km on my touring bike to complete the January Strava GF. Probably 50 km out on asphalt, then the return leg on gravel which given the recent weather will be packed smooth clay, or unrideable washboard.

Did 107 km in 5 hours today. Pretty good weather, ranging between -8 °C at the start and +2 by the end. The gravel roads were in very good shape for the most part.

Downside was my first case of during ride diarrhea of the year. Had to stop twice to take a dump, fortunately on the secluded gravel part of the ride. I think it might be from eating a big plate of scrambled eggs (made with 4 eggs) before heading out.

We out here

I climbed a nearby hill I climb all the time but with my parents this time. Needless to say we went at turtle place, somehow when you ride slow everyone else seems like a tryhard. Of course when you ride fast everyone else seems like a casual.

Ride was going well until I decided it was probably cold enough to go down a dirt road. It wasn't and my tires quickly picked up enough mud they would not move at all. So I carried the bike back to the intersection and spent the next 20 minutes scraping mud out of the fenders, and enough off my boots to let me clip into my pedals.

Instead of waiting until the end of the month like I did with the January Strava Grand Fondo, I got February's out of the way today. With the two of the traditionally shittiest months out of the way I should have little trouble doing the remaining 10 this year.

110 km in 5.5 hours, 60% unpaved roads with the temperature steady around -7 °C. I was dressed perfectly, which is to say I got cold quickly if I stopped for more than a few minutes. When I finished my base layer didn't even feel moist.

75 km ride today between -8 °C and +1. Took a scenic winding route through a valley past several ranches. Climbing out of the valley was a bit of a chore.

Today's ride put me over 1,000 km for the year, over a month ahead of when I reached that point last year. I'm also half way to a new February distance PR between the 3 rides I did this week.

40 km fat bike creek ride today. Right at the start and finish there was a disconcerting sound of cracking ice. The warm weather had snow sticking to my cleats, so I had trouble clipping in throughout the ride. I was doing pretty good on the way out. On the way back my HR was about 20 bpm higher up into Z4 and my legs were stiff. I'm not sure if I got behind on fueling or if the 400 km of winter riding over the past week finally caught up with me.

So about 3 weeks ago I had a brilliant idea of my girlfriend and I getting a couple cheap bicycles so we could ride together on the weekend. I had no idea what I was going to buy, did zero research and got a couple bikes used from a pawn shop.

yeah so i got one of these meme bikes for $120. Unbeknownst to me, the wheels weren't the stock ones. At the local bike shop I got some new tubes and tires for the bike the and guy pointed it out.

i don't even know if they're very good, but the bike shop guy said cheap mavics usually run about $250. so i feel a little less shit for owning a cheapo bike.

so i start riding and am getting pretty into it. i get a high visibility wind breaker, some padded bike shorts, and a fanny pack to hold some tools and my phone. over the past 3 weeks I've done about 75 miles of riding. this feels bretty good because i've never exercised in my life.

most of my rides are fairly short rides on the streets down here in crazy socal. doing about 8-10 miles on average and keeping track of my rides with my smartwatch. feels pretty comfy.

i think the more this shit warms up to me, i might actually do some research and get a good bike in the future.

this and just coast over the ice, dont be trying to put any power into pedaling when you go over it, just a straight line no turning. Be ready to unclip quickly to plant a foot down and avoid a fall. Later on stay away from snow with much road grim in it from the plows, it is usually iced up blocks of snow that dont crush easily and are tough to ride through.

Riding in the first undisturbed snow is fun as long as you can avoid obstacles. Tires slice through the snow and react fairly predictable. Once it gets churned up by cars or packed smooth and slippery it is much more difficult to ride.

When its slippery try cornering slow and don't lean. It feels weird but leaning will just let the bike slide out from under you. If you ride an MUP and it has a lot of slanted sections, you will be better off riding on the road. When slippery, a slanted section will pull you to the low side and you can't fight against it without risking having the front wheel slip out.

I hate when we get enough snow that you can't tell the path from the grass. You can run off the path at a shallow angle and your front wheel will catch the edge of the pavement.

Ehh, the thing about roads is they have cages on them, usually operated by homicidal retards with little regard for human life. With slippery surfaces and chunks of ice that may or may not crush when your tire hits them, combined with "puddles" that may or may not be 10" deep potholes, I prefer to take my chances on the MUP when there's snow, slush, or ice out. The slightest dodge to avoid a pothole or to regain traction after hitting a frozen brick could result in a quick and ugly death.

Not cyclocross guy. I have a cyclocross bike but I have studded tires and I'm more or less prepared for most things short of another blizzard.

Rode just over 100 km both yesterday and today with the temperature getting all the way up to -2 °C. I should have stuck with the route I originally planned for today. This morning the forecast wind direction was opposite of what was forecast yesterday, but that forecast was wrong. My average heart rate was 20 bpm lower than a similar ride I did 10 days ago. It always takes me about a week and half to adjust when switching back to a bike that I haven't used in a while.

Also set a new February distance PR already. This one should stand for a decade until the next big el nino.

It's not an issue with the hub. The chainrings are way beyond sharktooth, having sharp edges now. It's only the middle ring.

I tried changing the crankset but the LBS near my area only had 28's which meant no clearance on my current 22. Can't find replacement chainrings either. Went through the parts bin at the co-op and can't find a fitting chainring.

Rode my road bike today. My first one so I'm still getting used to it.
I managed to swerve into the soil on the side of the track, my front wheel just sunk in and I fell I to the track. Ended up with grazed elbow, knee, ass and wrist.
The reason I swerved is the bottle rack is in an awkward position so it's hard to get my bottle out, guess I'll move it now. The handling is less forgiving than a mtb too.

Worst thing is my front wheel is now not true. It's not rubbing the brakes but when I do brake I can feel it. I've only trued a mtb wheel and I feel that a road bike wheel would be more difficult due to far fewer spokes and narrower wheel which I think demands a higher level of perfection especially as it used rim brakes and not disc like my mtb.

Also there's some sort of creaking around the seat or seat post I hope nothing is cracked desu. Aluminium bike btw.

I got some new tires that are a little fatter than my old ones (700x28 before, 700x30 now)

The fender clearance was adequate when I got them, and I've put about 200 miles on them so far.

Yesterday it was pretty cold, and I noticed a weird sound about halfway into my ride, it got more and more worrisome so I stopped and found it was from the tire rubbing the rear fender. I thought maybe I had overinflated the tires so I unscrewed the valve slightly to let some air out, but the second I started untwisting it the valve exploded with a bang. I assume the air had heated up from the rubbing (at this point I had been hearing rubbing noises for about 3 miles averaging about 20mph)

It was too cold to change the tube properly so I took the train home and changed it last night. There was no rubbing at proper pressure. This morning about 5 miles into my ride, I heard the rubbing again. Since it's even colder today (25 F) I turned around and headed home slowly after letting out a little bit of air (didn't make much difference).

There's no rubbing when I spin the wheel inside.

All I can think of is the fender is changing shape in the cold. Anyone ever had this problem? This time the rubbing is above the valve stem, last time it was opposite the valve stem. I assume the tire is a little bit bunched up in those spots since I always mount from the valve stem out, but I figure it should even out after some riding. They're schwalbes, they look a little more wobbly when I spin the wheel compared to my contis, but it's the tire, not the wheel.

Yeah, I returned to my bike with a clear head this evening and it turns out the mounting holes are slots rather than perfect holes. I was able to get about 5mm of travel from the chainstay bridge bolt and that dramatically improved the clearance.

I feel pretty stupid now but also relieved that I can keep riding this winter. I had thought I was fucked and I'd have to get rid of these studded tires.

Measure your BCD and determine what kind of rings do you need. Also - since all the wear is on the middle, you might want to rethink the configuration of your crankset. You might benefit from a single ring drivetrain if you concentrate your riding on just one front ring.

You'll also need to replace the chain and cassette. Low end shimano cassettes are heavy, but very durable. Chains - HG5x or above are fine.

At what point do you decide that replacing parts is worth it? I bought the bike for $200 used. Rims are pretty worn when it was purchased...it has a L shape lip on the rims, even more so right now. It definitely needs a new rear wheel because the freehub is toast and I a new one runs for $80 at the LBS. I feel the need to upgrade the brakes too, about $40 each.

$500 CAN is not bad for that bike in my opinion. I would say that the frame is going to last basically forever. You could spend extra and get a set of hand built wheels and they will last longer than the cheaper ones. Got in a nice 40 miles today, lovely weather and the first time this year I'd seen more than a handful of other people out riding (55 degrees, sunny, snow pretty much gone, roads nearly dry), more than I expected to see on a Thursday afternoon. If I got a bike dialed to my needs - pretty much anything goes. Getting shit like seat angle, bar position and whatnot tends to get expensive.

Anyhow - the deal with used bikes is that you are trading in some labor and cost which they incur due to their used state. If you can't put in the labor, you have to pay for it. For that exchange you get a lower price.

A new bike from a reputable LBS will put you back $1000+ but usually does not need any attention for an extended time. From months, for a modern, multispeed MTB, to years in the case of internal gearbox city bikes.

If you don't get a killer deal on some other used bike ( which you are going to need to adjust to your needs anyway ) then I'd invest in the one you already have.

The only showstopper I see is the fact, that your bike is quite old ( 20+ years ) so getting it to modern standards might prove difficult.

Besides - spending $500 on a bike, that will last you 2-3 years, is peanuts in comparison to how much you need to spend on a car. And you get long term health benefits from this as well.

Of course, I don't speak about investing into high end butique stuff :)

I have a terrible problem! Today riding to the shops I noticed my rear tire began to rub agains the mudguard. I stopped and gave the mud guard a shake and it sorta fixed it but being anxious, 200m down the road I stopped again and flip day bike upside down to make sure the wheel was straight.

It wasn't.

Worse it wasn't just misaligned, but rather had a warp in it, when I located where the warped bit was sure enough there was a loose, slightly bent spoke.

Now it's a fancy internal hub and I really don't want to get the whole wheel replaced. If I get this spoke repaired, will the wheel just bend back into shape?

I'm assuming the ulock was around 1 fork arm only, not passing through the wheel or any spokes. Remove wheel, slide fork out, replace wheel. I saw that once on a bike with bolt on wheels, it sat in the same spot for months without getting stolen.

Earlier in the week I noticed the smooth packed mud top layer of the unpaved roads started flaking away. Today it was just about completely gone in many spots. Roads still aren't bad, but that change eats a few km/h off my top speed.

Joined in a group gravel ride, got crushed. But most of them race road, mtb and cross, so I didn't feel too bad. To keep up my HR was over 170. Which didn't leave much left for when encountering a hill. Plus I ended up drenched in sweat.

I really need to start doing more intense ride or I'll never get faster. There are only two types of group rides around here, hardcore and geriatric.

I'm in a similar position but I bike all year around. I think I have narrowed it down to wearing warmer clothes and not having enough cooling and mobility during the winter. Last year when a heat wave hit (from winter to summer outfit in one day basically) I went from 22km/h average to 30 km/h average in just one day.

That's one of the disadvantages of barcons. The cam is small and the radius is tight because they have to make it sweep through all the gears in one lever throw, and the cable is exposed. It's made worse by the fact that the cable is also forced through cable housing instead of out in the open like on the downtube.

I did my good deed for the week and rode with a friend who's not in shape but appreciates the extra motivation to push himself on rides. He insisted on riding off pavement in spite of the fact that our trails are currently half-covered in slush, so three hours were spent riding/walking through 12 miles of swampy muck, with patient waiting at the top of every climb - fuck that shit. On the bright side the post-ride beer was really good and the weather forecast the rest of the week is fabulous, so I'll be able to take full advantage of having a rest day today.

Now I know why they call it shitmano. Sram shifts so well I can't even tell that it shifted. My shimanos will usually grind a little before shifting, sram shifts instantly. Not having the audio cue tricks me. The only shitty part about sram is that I can't downshift as quickly as shimano for the rear.

How long is it going to take me to increase my endurance? I've been doing 20 or 30km rides and it's tough to do every day. I mean I cant do 30km a day yet. Maybe I could just do 20km a day. Went 34mph round a bend in 40mph crosswind today. Realised it was a bad idea once I saw how tight the bend was, luckily there wasn't a car coming.

Also in my village I had my right hand on the handlebars, was scratching my nose or something and a car comes the other way and I pull the front brake with my other hand far too fucking hard and lose control, somehow managed not to come off. Not doing that again.

Just so you know tho, that study on pollution inside cars vs. outside didn't account for the fact that your rate respiration is a lot of higher when you're riding a bike compared to when sitting in a car. Maybe you get less pollution per breath, but you're taking a lot more breaths overall - the cumulative pollution exposure by transit mode still isn't well understood.

Out riding last night in the mountains, only the moon to light the way while climbing was a surreal experience.

I'd like to see that. What could possibly make the air worse when you take the outside air and run it through a filter of your choice? Unless there is something seriously wrong with the car, I don't get it.

Well, I live in such a rural area that pollution isn't a direct problem for me so what would I know.

Wind was forecast to be 10 km/h today. But just as I was running out of energy it decided to jump up to 30 gusting to 45 km/h for the last 15 km. The gravel roads got just enough moisture on them recently to soften them up slowing me down.

Found a box with a brand new headlight for a piece of construction equipment in the ditch while I was riding. I'm always finding interesting stuff in the ditch.

Strong head wind on my way out today. Then when as I reached my half-way point it died down. Got a flat on my way back, managed to swap the tube without getting too cold. I think it was caused by one of the tire studs working its way into the tire. My drive train sounded horrible on the way back, I guess the spray from yesterday wore off more of the lube than I thought.

Took my new 90s rigid mtb on her maiden voyage today. Trails were wet so i just rode on pavement and grass. My last bike was a 1999 steel entry level KHS w/ coil shock. I really enjoyed the dropper post and the larger wheels- i'm buying the hype.

Supposed to get to 11 °C tomorrow. Going to try a 150 km route half gravel / half paved route. Tonight I'll swap out my studded tires for my cross tires which will knock a kg off my wheels. Also going to wear my fall weight tights which should be less restrictive on the legs. But it could mean I'll be cold for a bit to start since it will be below freezing in the morning.

The 150 number was me rounding up. My plan was 145, but due to a road being closed I had to back track and ended up with 163 km today. I contemplated riding the extra 13 km to complete the Strade Bianche challenge, but decided it wasn't important.

Yesterday the forecast was for 10 km/h winds, but that got revised to 20 km/h. Checking the weather when I got home it ended up starting at 20 km/h then ramping up to 25, then 30. I spent nearly 4 hours in the drops doing 19 km/h heading upwind on pavement. After some gas station pizza, I was doing 35 km/h on gravel roads heading back.

After back tracking at the closed road I was doing over 40 km/h on pavement until I switched back to gravel after bypassing the closed section. There was one 6 km section that sucked. Freshly graded and soft slowing my down about 15 km/h.

I managed to keep my energy levels fairly consistent all day. I still manage to screw that up on a regular basis.

After it got cold in December I planned a bunch of gravel rides around 100 km on ridewithgps for spring. Its been so warm I've ended up riding half of them already. Today I passed 1000 km for February, 2.5x more than I've ever done in Feb. I'm only 150 km away from 2,000 for the year. The soonest I'd ever gotten to just 1,000 in the past is March 9th.

They're worse than cigarettes by some measures. After a fatty meal the fat and cholesterol content of your blood will spike and not return to normal for 12 hours. Fat and cholesterol in your blood will decrease performance. More so as it starts to get clogged in your veins and arteries.

that reminds me I have to catch up with this dude I know who broke his back after a tree jumped in front of him, was airlifted out, and recovered enough in two months to be back getting KOM on every fucking hill in this city. It should have taken him a year to get out of the wheelchair, if ever. His doctor was working on a theory that his insanely fast recovery was in part due to his being vegan for decades. Wanna find out if that study has gotten anywhere.
