This any good for $160? Gonna be commuting about 6 miles a day. I'll be replacing some of the parts as well, brakes, tires etc. I'm a poor college student so I can't really afford anything more

>>917095
I found it on Walmart's site.
It really is a piece of crap, probably made in China, Walmart bike. No-name components of questionable quality. The wheelset is built on single-wall alloy rims, which is probably the biggest weakness of all. I wouldn't trust the thing any farther than I could chuck it.
Frankly the fact that it's a Walmart bike is enough by itself to disqualify it, but the details are it's not made to last.
Save up several hundred more and go hunting on Craigslist for a used bike with name-brand components and a decent wheelset. You'll be much happier in the long run.
>>917095
I would buy a 90's mountainbike for such a commute for half the price
1. Take that $160 to Craigslist and get an old ten speed or rigid 90's mtb (we have a BBG, a bike buy general. They can help you find one)
2. Save up more money to get something much better
3. Take your money to a local bike co-op (if you have one) and have someone there help you out
Those are your best options.

Hey op I work in a bike shop and students bring these kabuto bikes, gmc's, and trustee fixies and I would advise against them. The hubs usually go first, then the bottom bracket and cranks mess up. Use that money to find a used bike on Craigslist or similar, you will be a lot happier. Avoid these brands:
>road master
>huffy
>Schwinn
>kabuto
>gmc
>gravity
>anything with a car name brand
Look for anything made by a large company like giant, trek, specialized, Fuji, or Cannondale
>>917322
>probably made in China
>probably
It just boggles the mind how people will not just straight up accuse China of making every single piece of shit product you lay your eyes on. Which would be the absolute truth.
I'm not saying they can't make decent quality products, it's just those products are designed and QC'd by a non-Chinese company ie: USA/Europe/Japan.
This shit in the OP isn't worth its mass in scrap metal.

OP, note that some old Schwinns can be pretty nice. Probably don't go for anything lower on the line than a Super Sport, for various reasons. The super sport being the cutoff, since it actually has a fairly decent cromoly frame. You can find their 70's and 80's lines pretty easily online (Sheldon Brown, specifically.)
As for car name brands, old Peugeots can be pretty nice.

Commuting on a single speed is only recommended if you're riding in the city only on mostly if not only, flat terrain. I took my rear rack off on my 9pd cyclocross bike that I use for commuting, and now I only wear a backpack during my commutes. It's a pain in the ass to ride up a hill after a long day with a bag full of stuff even with a bike with multiple gearing, but the several gearing options definitely help.
>>919310

Get something with 26'' wheels if you're on a budget. 26'' wheels and the related parts are cheaper and stronger and easier to find. You could garbage pick a old MTB and use that for parts if you really had to but if you go with drop bars, brifters and that nonsense, parts are going to cost more.

They're silver. Just being honest... Really want to get into cycling. I bought on a whim. Rode 15 miles today and had a blast.
I'm a total noon so please no bully... I noticed the wheels wobble a bit when I flip it over and spin them.. Also the brakes don't work real well. The rear especially.
The pads appear to be pretty new.
Thinking of bringing it to a shop to get a tuneup so I don't fuck it up. Already started cleaning it up.
Bought it for 150 from a weird and friendly canadian.

Go to your LBS and ask for a wheel true and some chain lube. Also don't fall for the expensive tune up meme
>>974938
If you treat department store bikes well they will last a lifetime, Overhaul everything when needed, clean and lube the chain with a chain cleaner. however you probably know that most people who buy them let them outside to rust and dont do anything mechanically with them at all.
>>992843
A lifetime of 10 miles a year.
>>992843
And a good amount of them have absolute shit components that will never really work well even if you have an experienced mechanic work on it. There is a very low limit to how well plastic brake levers connected to bent sheet metal calipers with non-adjustable pads on painted rims will work. Plus there is the trouble of getting shifting to work even most of the time on out of true chainrings and wobbly freewheels using garbage-tier grip shifters.
This is just an opinion from a bike shop employee of one of the only shops in 30 miles that doesn't turn away BSO's for more than tube changes. Some BSO's have the stars align and they are able to be adjusted to satisfactory performance, but this isn't feasible for the majority of them.

>>995877
Frame could be rotting from the inside without any outward signs. Be careful.
Hey /n/ my knowledge on bikes isn't that good but I would like your help. I know such questions should be asked in something like a /bbg/ but due to my limited know-how of bikes I don't dare to start one. I rode a $100.00 Thruster for 2 years 10 miles a day.
After retensioning the wheels and overhauling everything correctly, the frameset and wheelset held together really well.
However the crankset wore out and fell off even though it was tightened to spec.
Also I replaced the brakes/lever with coop parts well before they broke so I can't tell you how shitty they were.
>>996535
Did you roll the tires in puddles of paint?
I... actually kind of like that look.
>>996365
Weigh each frame against each other literally to see which is lighter, and then weigh each other figuratively and decide which you like more.
>>917095
Those are fine, but keep in mind they are single speed and kind of heavy for a road bike. They also make the "Sugiyama" with flat bars. I think Kent makes them so you could get the "Thruster Fixie" like >>996535 for cheaper if you like flat bars. The Kabuto is kind of high for a bottom-barrel Walmart bike.
>>917095
There's some target and walmart fixies for $100 or less you could use one of those or that one you posted is fine just don't put too much money into that thing.

>>1000350
I actually think department store bikes are OK if you assemble it well or have someone knowledgeable do it. The single speed bikes don't really have too much to break. The "Takara" and "Thruster" bikes are bottom of the barrel but okay for commuting. They are heavy for road bikes, but if you keep it simple that's okay. The worst kind of bargain bin bikes are the ones with dual suspension and fancy stuff that really sucks and will break on you. For the same reason, I wouldn't freak out if people choose a Wal-Mart 1 speed cruiser bike. Putting money into wal-mart bikes is the trap though. If you have to seriously replace parts all the time, it's a bad idea. I rode a 16 year old Kmart bike for like FOREVER though with virtually no maintenance except tire/tube changes and I was okay.
>>1001477
>a bike that can't be repaired is a good idea for commuting
The only reason this is true is that places where people commute by bike also have good public transportation
>>1001551
i feel like this could blow up in your face though. if your bike fails catastrophically when you're commuting to work, you might crash (anywhere would be bad, but imagine having a crash around traffic and busses and shit).
there are obviously some components that fail in a way that's not dangerous, but there are some things that might not. and the cost of repairing and fixing stuff that goes bad frequently might not just add up in dollars and cents, but in time as well.
