It really is a piece of crap, probably made in China, Walmart bike. No-name components of questionable quality. The wheelset is built on single-wall alloy rims, which is probably the biggest weakness of all. I wouldn't trust the thing any farther than I could chuck it.

Frankly the fact that it's a Walmart bike is enough by itself to disqualify it, but the details are it's not made to last.

Save up several hundred more and go hunting on Craigslist for a used bike with name-brand components and a decent wheelset. You'll be much happier in the long run.

Hey op I work in a bike shop and students bring these kabuto bikes, gmc's, and trustee fixies and I would advise against them. The hubs usually go first, then the bottom bracket and cranks mess up. Use that money to find a used bike on Craigslist or similar, you will be a lot happier. Avoid these brands:

OP, note that some old Schwinns can be pretty nice. Probably don't go for anything lower on the line than a Super Sport, for various reasons. The super sport being the cutoff, since it actually has a fairly decent cromoly frame. You can find their 70's and 80's lines pretty easily online (Sheldon Brown, specifically.)
As for car name brands, old Peugeots can be pretty nice.

Commuting on a single speed is only recommended if you're riding in the city only on mostly if not only, flat terrain. I took my rear rack off on my 9pd cyclocross bike that I use for commuting, and now I only wear a backpack during my commutes. It's a pain in the ass to ride up a hill after a long day with a bag full of stuff even with a bike with multiple gearing, but the several gearing options definitely help.

Get something with 26'' wheels if you're on a budget. 26'' wheels and the related parts are cheaper and stronger and easier to find. You could garbage pick a old MTB and use that for parts if you really had to but if you go with drop bars, brifters and that nonsense, parts are going to cost more.

And a good amount of them have absolute shit components that will never really work well even if you have an experienced mechanic work on it. There is a very low limit to how well plastic brake levers connected to bent sheet metal calipers with non-adjustable pads on painted rims will work. Plus there is the trouble of getting shifting to work even most of the time on out of true chainrings and wobbly freewheels using garbage-tier grip shifters.

This is just an opinion from a bike shop employee of one of the only shops in 30 miles that doesn't turn away BSO's for more than tube changes. Some BSO's have the stars align and they are able to be adjusted to satisfactory performance, but this isn't feasible for the majority of them.

After retensioning the wheels and overhauling everything correctly, the frameset and wheelset held together really well.

However the crankset wore out and fell off even though it was tightened to spec.

Also I replaced the brakes/lever with coop parts well before they broke so I can't tell you how shitty they were.

I actually think department store bikes are OK if you assemble it well or have someone knowledgeable do it. The single speed bikes don't really have too much to break. The "Takara" and "Thruster" bikes are bottom of the barrel but okay for commuting. They are heavy for road bikes, but if you keep it simple that's okay. The worst kind of bargain bin bikes are the ones with dual suspension and fancy stuff that really sucks and will break on you. For the same reason, I wouldn't freak out if people choose a Wal-Mart 1 speed cruiser bike. Putting money into wal-mart bikes is the trap though. If you have to seriously replace parts all the time, it's a bad idea. I rode a 16 year old Kmart bike for like FOREVER though with virtually no maintenance except tire/tube changes and I was okay.
