When I am older I will definitely get an RV. Travel around the states, camp out, the usual.

Speaking from personal experience, I looked at a number of small RV's (I live in the US) but I didn't want to have to own and pay taxes on two vehicles. A RV is terrible to drive to store or to work. About the only vehicle that can handle both roles is a VW Westphalia and they haven't been produced in years. So I settled on buying a Casita, a small 2,000 pound trailer that i can pull with my Ford Escape. And I like being able to unhitch when I'm camped and go exploring.

Why wouldn't it be possible?

The shower is always the tough part. Everything else you can cheap out and make do: crappy chemical toilet, hiking stove, thermo-electric cooler, etc. But you can't have a practical shower without full standing head-room, two big tanks, at least one powerful pump, and a good size water heater. It's all expensive and heavy and freezes in the winter, but if you don't have it you might as well just go camping with a motorcycle.
In OP's pic the volume required for engine, drivetrain, various tankage, and kitties litterbox all seem to be ommited. She seems to be storing spare gasoline indoors. It looks too wide, especially in Japan. No, shit like this is not even possible.

Parents own a van.

Basically the van in the pic is way larger than an actual van would be. Space is at a premium with most motorhomes, RVs not so much.

Basically my parents van is like this:

1. Driver and front passenger seat at front.
2. Above Drivers seat is a bunk bed, this is where I sleep.
3. Dining, seating area converts to a sleeping area.
4. Small Kitchenette/sink with fridge.
5. Last third or so is a bathroom.


Space is a premium in those things, it won't be like having a small bedsit on wheels. I'm willing to answer questions.

Yes, that shit is actually quite hard to build.

I'm planning to build a camping car out of a Fiat Ducato van (16.3 ft external size).

Internal size: 2670mm lenght, 1872mm width (down to 1420mm in the rear wheels area), 1930mm height. That is, 105.1 x 73.7 (55.9) x 76 inches - but should subtract at least 30-40mm on every side for winter/summer insulation; this means that if you shouldn't be taller than 6ft...

I can actually place a standard-size bed (75x32 inch), accommodate a 27x55in bathroom (has a statue of Liberty on the door), and still have space for kitchen, sink, refrigerator, stove and a foldable glass table near the side door. Battery, inverter and white/black water tanks go under the bed (under the van there is not much space available)

The OP image is not possible without rebuilding the van, and the character playing with the cat is less than 5ft tall. Also, his internal useful insulated space appears to be ~120in wide x ~80in long. Also, I wonder where goes the cat poo, where are the (large and heavy) white/black water tanks, battery, inverter, kitchen gas tank, and so on.

Note also that heavy stuff should be in the lowest possible position (keep the CG low) and decently balanced, for safety reasons.

Using quality stuff (Dometic cassette wc, Shurflo water pump, and so on) I can build it with only 15,000 bucks, including insulation.

A decent project should keep in mind these points:
- should let you stay 7-10 days without resupplying anything (if you don't waste energy and water)
- decent toilet room with shower; you should take a dump and a shower without having the entire van smelling for hours
- decent kitchen with food storage area and a decent fridge (you shouldn't ever have to wish to eat like other humans)
- easily cleanable and serviceable appliances (water tanks and so on): you don't want to panic
- well ventilated, well insulated (stove should be for emergency only)
- easily accessible bed

Privacy, redundancy, safety!
- not leaking light if all lights on inside and totally dark outside
- two separate plumbing, two separate electric systems (in case of emergency, disable a system and switch everything to the other)
- low center of gravity (tanks and batteries have to be on the floor).

but there are times you will have to stay inside way longer than you have thought: in those cases it is essential to be able to stand up for a few minutes stretching.

also, a well-packed low-roof van has less breathable air than a high top one. the rule "smaller is better" (which is not the exact opposite of "bigger is better") only relates to a few use cases.

Most will have a source of potable water, some will have a dump-station for RV's.
I've only seen a couple with actual hookups for RV's though.

If you stick to the chain stops ("Loves", etc) they tend to be kept fairly clean. All I can say is I've never seen a really scuzzy/nasty one.

Here in Europe you would be able to drive only if the interior may be classified as transported goods - i.e., it has to be easily and quickly removable (the vehicle does not change its status from "van" or "truck" to "recreational vehicle").
Certification is a lenghty and painstaking process, because engineering relations have to be signed, and so on. This is why self-built RVs are quite uncommon on our roads.
