Do you guys like riding on gravel? What kind of bike do you use for gravel rides? Have you ever ridden a gravel grinder race or gravel group ride?

I don't really like riding gravel but I sometimes ride gravel because there are a lot of gravel roads where I live and sometimes gravel bike trails are convenient routes. I use my commuter/randonneur rig, I think having a bike specifically for gravel is stupid. Fuck n+1, having only a few bikes (and minimal overlap between the types of riding they are good at) makes each bike have more meaning.

Pic related, me riding on gravel.

No. Gravel is annoying. Also "gravel grind" is an annoying meme that needs to stop.

The term or the events? If the former, what should they be called? If the latter, why?

Yeah, probably 85% of my riding is on dirt roads. They're a lot nicer than the paved ones where I am. The dirt roads around me have way less cars, they're more scenic, and theres a lot more climbing.
I actually like riding on paved roads a lot more if they have nice road surface but here in New England they are so horrible it tends to be a lot harsher riding than most dirt.

That looks really fun.

yeah it is a lot of fun. I was going to hit this trail today but its still muddy which would leave ruts and destroy the trails and also 20+ miles of mud isnt as fun as it sounds.. I'm not trying to make a sports drink commercial.

I like gravel roads where you aren't riding on gravel. Either where rain softened the road and all the gravel got packed into the dirt, or where vehicles have cleared a few smooth channels to ride in. Riding in loose gravel blows.

The dirt roads around here are really nice when dry, but unusable when wet. Pic is smooth dry clay.

Is this what people call gravel ? Or is this rather considered hard packed dirt? Shouldn't gravel be like at least 5cm deep loose rocks rather?
>>
>>896828
Would you like help finding several hundred more miles of gravel roads near LA or is this enough to get you started?

Needs more Rincon.
>>
>>896830
On these roads, gravel and probably dirt and/or sand get laid down and then it gets packed down over time.
>>
>>896831
So I'm supposed to do 50miles of roads round trip just to get to some dirt that isn't even flat?
>>
>>896883
Of course. 50 miles is fuck nothing. What are you, a filthy casual?

I dont mind gravel when its actually gravel, the 28c tires on my road bike can handle it. But where I live the gravel roads produce clouds of really fine powdery dust that cling to everything. So if I were to ride my bike on it I would have to clean/degrease/grease my gears every month which would suck hard.
>>

>cleaning your bike

Jesus christ you should be cleaning yourndrivetrain at least once a week. The fuck is wrong with you nigga

its kinda fun to leave mud on my road bike and then go troll all the other roadies, I usually only clean mine once every 2 weeks.

Why would you do it that often if you're not getting it wet or muddy?

Fuckin' hate dealing with drivetrains.

Nearby there was some proper deep gravel, I presume they just shoved it down and let the cars bed it in sort of thing, great fun to ride on, surprised I didn't get a puncture though.
