Means trolley would have tended to mean more of an interurban type of large railroad carriage. I think, back in the boom (the bubble really, and the burst was when 6000 km of electrified urban rail got unceremonially dismantled) years these were manufactured a lot by the various independent railroad carriage manufacturers, by sticking GE-supplied power electronics into them.

Meanwhile, streetcar would have drawn its heritage from the originally horse drawn town tramways, so these systems tended to serve very locally, and had reduced loading gauge for all sorts of reasons, from a single pair of horses simply couldn't pull a larger carriage to the said two axle carriages needing to nudge through 30 ft radius curves.

Red cars = trolley
Yellow cars = streetcar

As I said, this is most a tendency in language use, and the terms are interchangeable; making them strictly mean either is a modern retcon in attempt of classification of mostly historic things.

But these are factoids filtered across the ocean, so take them with a grain of salt.

Cable cars are trams without a motor that grip an underground cable. Similar to a funicular in that it's pulled by cable, but funiculars have two cars permanently attached which act as counterweight, cable cars grip and release the cable which is continually moving. San Francisco has the only cable car system in operation in the world.
For added confusion, gondolas (aka aerial tramways) are sometimes called cable cars.

For even more confusion, conduit cars look like cable cars (and sometimes even used converted cable car infrastructure), but they're electric, there's a third rail in the slot below the street.
AFAIK there are no conduit car systems anywhere in the world. There are third-rail-powered tramways using different systems which aren't a conduit (which implies a slot below the street).

And in Lisbon. However they are not cable cars because they're two cars permanently attached to the cables and working as counterweights.

The "elevadores" in Lisbon use an intricate system whereby the cable movement is powered by a circuit running through both cars (hence the two overhead wires), and only when both cars give it power it will run. Think of it as a water pipe with two water taps, where the cable will only move when both taps are open and water can flow. That way any car can stop the movement. I'd say this makes the elevadores one of the most /n/-approved transportation system ever with an autism/10.

Yes, yes, very well, HOWEVER still not "cable cars" in the proper sense.
