i guess i can post it again

had to remove the rack because the bolts are too long and I cant shift to the highest gear, gonna remove the fenders because of the same reason

somebody said I could add a spacer between the frame and the wheel, would that affect the frame?

>bolt too long
the solution is to put a spacer on the bolt before it goes through the rack and frame, this keeps it from protruding and doesn't hurt anything
>>
>>1092913
>bolts are too long
Either use spacers or get shorter bolts, jesus.
>>
>>1092913
just file the bolts down- it's not as if sticking out through the dropouts is giving them any extra purchase over the threading
>>
>>1092917
thanks anon
>>1092918
i already mentioned the spacers, as to the bolts i didnt think much about it because i have another bike, no need to get your panties in a knot
>>1092921
alright, thanks anon
>>
>>1092922
the two anons mentioning spacers mean putting a washer on the bolt between the frame and the accessories (or on top of the accessories which is unusual)
>>
>>1092925
i got that, i actually meant to do that before asking this apparently obvious question, but i had no spacers nor washers available that fit properly
>>
>>1092795
Why do 90's MTB's look like if you tried to do what modern MTB's can the fork would end up looking like deer antlers.
>>
>>1093038
Because they would. They were not off road bicycles. They were gravel and singletrack toys.
>>
>>1092795
I can't handle how comfy this is.
>>
>>1093038
>>1093040
I mean, even older suspension bikes couldn't handle today's trails. Go look at the 1998 DH championships. They were literally just riding DH bikes down a muddy track.

I feel so special.

Also that bike isn't put together anymore, I swapped most of the parts onto an obnoxiously 90's KHS frame, but I'm considering reverting back to the giant.

Is there a particular meme 90's MTB that /n/ generally recommends? Just so I know in case my current bike gets stolen, it'd become a quick back up option.
>>
>>1093116
Having a backup bike won't hurt you. Start scouting your local used market for good prices on good brands. GT, trek, specialized and others . If you wait untill you need it, you'll get a worse deal.
>>
>>1093117
I'm from the SF Bay Area so finding one shouldn't be an issue, it'd just be a matter of finding one for the right price

you must live in an area with a bunch of pussies, where I live the bike path still has joggers and cyclists within hours of any snowfall and then it hardens into a bone-jarring moonscape of ruts and footprints

still better than roads though because no potholes filled with saltwater, homicidal snow plows, salt trucks shooting salt pellets into your eyeballs, or cagers

>>1092795
>>1093085
What's up with the chain under the seat?

Also, other than the shredded seat, this bike is peak comfy.

>>1092833
As nice as that is of an example of a mid-90's rigid MTB, not a commuter.
>dang is that a cook bros QR seatpost lever
>>
>>1093340
>chain under the seat?
anti-theft device
>>
>>1093348
anti theft device anyone can easily dismantle with a chain braking tool or really just a screwdriver?
>>
>>1093360
Most thieves are essentially lazy people who will take something they can get without working for it - using tools to break a lock or a chain is enough work that it will discourage casual thieves.
>>
>>1093340
>What's up with the chain under the seat?
As trashy as the saddle is/was, it's also one of my favorite shaped saddles out there. It's an Avocet O2, and the chain was just another anti-theft measure, aside from the fact that not even the tweakers around here would steal it (but they might).
In any case I'm almost disappointed I've swapped the parts over to the KHS.
>>
>>1093385
didn't your chainstay snap? if so it was for the best

>>1093139
>not just installing a drum brake and saving your rims from wear and general wretchedness

>>
>>
>>1093392
Yep. I've got like four hoseclamps latched on tight holding it together. As sketchy as it is, it holds up perfectly well for now.
>>
>>1093434

very nice.

but be honest, how comfortable are you on the hoods ?

Isn't it obvious from five miles away that the fit is completely shit? I'm betting those aren't even V levers and the brake system is a complete mismatch. Total hipster me-too build.
>>
>>1093580
i think you're right. not to mention that tiny headtube but the spacer stack is the same height. all style, no substance.
>>
>>1093360
if someone is bringing a chain breaker with them, just to steal my saddle + seatpost then they can fucking have it
>>
>>1093606
oh... i assumed you use a small padlock and tie the bike up with it. i have seen that kind of crap before made me wonder what the hell was the owner thinking.

Monster crosses and dirt drops are nothing new. It is perfectly possible to get a good frame fit if you choose well and you're not a complete retard - or white knighting one on the internets.

This is my 1995 caloi team lx body with system control bars. The only thing that has been replaced in 22 years is the shocks to rock shox. I plan on replacing the wheels next year because they were top of the line at the time and lasted this long. My uncle past it down to me when I was a teenager and I have rode it since then.
>>
>>1093669
sexy, just dont use that lock so it doesnt get stolen.
>>
It was a rural school that I took it to. It is open during the summer and I sometimes use the bike to do bmx type things even though it's mountain because it works well for me.
>>
>>1093536
Thanks.
Honestly, for my normal 5 mile commute, my comfort is fine. I have a similar amount of drop on my road bike. But, anything longer than 20 miles and it does get a little tiresome. I'm waiting for a velo orange cigne stem to be back in stock, then I can hopefully ditch a few of the spacers.

>>1093580
The levers are Tektro RL520's, for use with v-brakes.
I used to have a 170mm stem on there, but it only had 8° rise so I swapped it out for the current one which is 17°. The reach is more comfortable with a longer stem (I'm 6'1"). Once I've got the above stem it should level out the bars to about seat height.

I probably could have got up a frame size, but at the time I couldn't find a bravado in a large and it was going for a good price. This is my first bike build so I'm still learning and adjusting some of the components. But even as it is, it's a blast to ride and it can handle everything I've asked of it so far.

1988 Trek 870, an unusual 1-year model that Trek made by using the cast lugs and clusters and dt shift mounts from a road frame, turned into a mountain bike by tweaking the geometry for 26" wheels and adding canti and u-brake studs.

>>
>>1093725
Thanks, I'm still looking for a rack that doesn't cost the moon. This is meant to be a budget build and a good rack seems to be the same cost as the whole build so far...

>>
>>1093746
It's not likely that someone will bother just for a saddle.
>>
>>1093606
You only need a chainbreaker if you want to re-use the chain. I'm pretty sure I could have that chain off in under 5 seconds with a screwdriver, or an allen key, or a pair of pliers... You get the picture.

If they're coming with tools to strip parts of the bike (rather than just going after wheels and seats with QRs), that chain is history.

Here's mine, have cared for this bike for over 10 years minimum, still rides like a dream.

Only things done to it are replacing the grips, tires, brake pads, cables and chains when they are worn. Wheels have some live left, but ten years of riding constantly on the road and on the dirt made them quite worn.

Love it when I blaze by the kids on trails with bikes worth 2k plus with my ancient bike with canti's and worn tires.

I will never let go of this one.

i find it rather ironic that as soon as disc brakes came along therefore making colored anodised rims keep a pristine surface - they became unpopular and completely disappeared

I just never added rim brakes on mine. Built it in '78, it's on it's third coaster brake. Red Araya rims that are a bit faded now, but what do you expect almost 40 years later?
