Is this airport cursed?

Why do they keep turning off instrument landing system (ILS) and take years to repair that shit?

>>
They have more important matters to mind than airline safety. It's San Francisco.

>turning off instrument landing system

Not sure exactly, but ILS is good for straight in approaches. SFO has some nighttime noise abatement procedures that require a curved approach over the bay (to keep away from neighborhoods). So ILS is not so useful.

On a related note: What ever happened to that Asiana pilot, Wei Tu Lo?
>>
>2017
>perpendicular runways.

I'm a laughing.
>>
>>1090955
They've been like that for many decades. Meanwhile, Texas is full of flat, open, monetarily worthless land.

Not hard to understand the differences.
>>
>>1090881
That picture isn't even accurate. The control tower they point to has been dismantled. A newer, taller one is to the right.
>>
>>1090962
Yeah 'cos it's what the control tower looks like is the important bit here.
>>
>>1090939
>nighttime noise abatement procedure

>some rich fucks build houses where they shouldn't to begin with, become extremely sensitive noises because their Adderall habit, so tens of thousands of air passengers' lives have to be put on unnecessary risk every night

SF logic
>>
>>1090881
Holy FUCK that was a close one. How do you mistake a taxiway with a runway all lit up on its edges??? Boggles the mind. Task saturation maybe?

>>1091040
Nimbyism is everywhere, desu. Back around 2000 about 15,000 people (a majority Indo-Canadians) petitioned to have YYC (Calgary) moved because they bought houses in line with the main approach. Good for a laugh in the news... would've cost billions.
>>
>>1090955
So what are y'all gonna do if there's strong north or south winds?

Also, SFO is kinda boxed into its location. The San Andreas Fault is immediately to the west, so the ground rises pretty steeply, and of course the bay is to the east. They don't have much room, is what I'm saying.
>>
>>1090881
The guy they interviewed's name is Dick Deeds
>>
>>1091137
The ground doesn't rise steeply. What are you talking about?
>>
>>1090986
It's fucking dumb that they can't even use an accurate illustration for something that just happened. Don't defend lazy and incompetent representations.
>>
>>1090939
>nighttime noise

Holy kek. Liberals are the worst
>>
>>1091137
modern airliners can land in stiff cross breezes.

perpendicular runways were to accommodate early airliners. if the wind was in the wrong direction. they could circle around and try the other.
>>
>>1091267
Yeah you're right. The person illustrating a potentially serious air crash should have spent more time accurately researching the current and precise layout of the airport and then searching for a complete and accurate representation, just in case somebody was autistic enough to give a single fuck. That would definitely have been a far better use of their time than just taking a stock image of the airport and drawing on it. What were they thinking?
>>
>>1090961
>Texas
>busiest passenger airport in the world

Select one.
>>
>>1092201
Georgia, whatever. Still had a lot of flat open space to work with.
>>
>>1091359
Basic fact checking is a jorunalistic (and related activity) requirement. You're the kind of lazy dipshit that would read an article about a US stealth bomber airstrike and take zero notice that the article's stock photo was actually a B-52.
>>
>>1092279
Until you realize that Atlanta is all hills and the airport was already having to build new runway and taxiway on top of major interstates more than a decade ago. The airport is wedged between three interstate routes with two large interchanges, and surrounded by industrial parks, subdivisions, and several subcities. Not sure where all this "room" is.
>>
>>1092281
>Basic fact checking

What possible impact does the fact that the control tower changed since that stock image was produced have ANY FUCKING BEARING on the story?

Did you notice that the airplane for Flight 759 wasn't drawn to scale and isn't a photo-realistic representation, too? STOP THE PRESSES!
>>
>>1090881
>near-miss

So, they almost missed the other plane?
>>
>>1091137
>What are y'all gonna do if there's strong north or south winds?

Wind patterns are pretty static in a certain geography. Airport runways are built with this in consideration.
>>
>>1092411
they keep thinking about building a second commercial airport to take the load off Hartsfield.

They thought about doing it at the old air force nuclear power research base. Though the radiation and distance from the city nixed that. so now it is the dawson forest.

then they tried Briscoe Field. the NIMBYs have shitcanned that several times.

dekalb peachtree is out, too many residences around it. no room to expand.

there is charlie brown. though I don't think it has expansion capability .
>>
>>1092862

Yeah. IIRC the city bought some land out in Paulding County for a new airport, but locals and Delta shut that down real quick. Most recent lease renewal on Hartsfield even has a clause saying that the city cannot and will not build or operate any new commercial airports for the duration of the 20 year lease. Delta likes having the Atlanta market captive.

It would be nice if Cobb could turn the Air Reserve base up there into a commercial airport, but their residents are already screaming bloody murder about the traffic increase from the new Braves stadium so its unlikely without even getting in to how much the Air Force will be against it.

I personally wouldn't mind living close to an airport though. I already live just inside the perimeter on one of the approaches to Peachtree-Dekalb, and the sound of the jets going by is actually pretty comfy.
>>
>>1090939
>Wei Tu Lo
I think he's eternal history of shitposting going to far.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CaOkTKfxu44
>>
>>1091280
This is a load of shit.. taking unnecessary risks is fucking retarded. Modern airliners have a limit of about 50kts for crosswind and if airports located in windy areas didnt have perpendicular runways that would increase diversions which is bad for revenue.
>>
>>1095656
Atlanta, LA, Phoenix, Seattle, Orlando, Salt Lake, Austin, San Jose, and several others don't have perpendicular or even diagonal runways.
>>
>>1091137
the ground is rising steeply? wtf the only possible way for that to happen in a short amount of time is if you have a volcano right down the airport
which given this is SF they might actually built int on a volcano
>>
>>1095681
Yeah but they would have built perpendicular runways if that was possible at the time of construction. Sure the requirements for runways have laxed because the capabilities of modern airliners have increased but particularly windy airports like O'hare have perpendicular runways and O'hare and Seatac were constructed around the same time in 1944. Every airport wants perpendicular runways but they compromise for various reasons when they have to. General Aviation aircraft have less crosswind capability also. Everything is a compromise and youre partially right that the requirement for perpendicular runways have decreased but still perpendicular runways are *optimal* and decrease delays.
