When I started cycling in the late 90's black bartape was uncommon but now it's everywhere, even for the pros. I get why your avarage joe dont want to change tape everytime it gets dirty, but does the pro mechanics have some weird union thing going on?

It's hard to make anything but black tape look good when all the bikes have black/grey components, black wheels, and a black/white/red color scheme.

I assume carbon is a bit to blame. I was at a pro race (UCI 1.2) earlier this year and some of the teams had "stealth bikes" so you couldnt even se the brand. Wasted money for those sponsors.
But for the looks, teams like Cannondale Drapac should look better with green bar tape.
Whyte tape 4 life, r8 my baiku
Saw a old clip from a early 90's tour yesterday.
Everyone and their grandmas cat had white bartape.

how the heck are your brake levers so low

He's one of those dummies who ride on the drops all the time

Hey

10/10 tape wrapping

Thanks

Not that you really ride on those `hoods`really comfortably though.
"White" tape always.
>>1090742
It's not like you can really use brakes while on the "hoods" or shift gears or ride for longer periods of time with those DT shifters-era brake leavers. They are uncomfortable as fuck.
The bartape I'm using is fizik glossy if anyone would be interested, would highly recommend if you don't want to change your white bar tape every month to keep it clean, with this one you can wipe off pretty much everything off of it.

Those old school brake hoods were used just like modern ones. Obviously modern brifters offer more comfort, and the added shifting is a huge upgrade but you are suppossed to mount old brakes just like modern ones. >>1089482 is just wrong.
Braking in the hoods is totally doable with them too. Stopping power is a bit lower because you canĀ“t get as much leverage as in the drops, but if your brakes are set up properly it should still be enough.

If you cant use the brakes on hood, youre doing it wrong or have child hands.

I'm not denying that they were used m8, but time really took it's toll on the parts. The groupset is original shimano 105 arrow which is over 30 years old, the shifting is actually suprisingly smooth, but the brakes are really, really rusty, not in a literal sense of course. I took them apart a few times for maintenance and tried to make them work somewhat smoother, but there is nothing I can do to fix it in a long run. As I ride drops most of the time, I don't really care about them that much anyway.

Perhaps the pivot bushings have some grit in them? Try disassembling the calipers, cleaning, & lubing the pivot points before re-assembling

I mostly agree except for
>you are suppossed to mount old brakes just like modern ones
It's not really possible to replicate the flat transitionning of brifters on compact bars with trad levers on classic round bars.
Probably black sock Armstrongs fault and the general "internationalization" of cycling.

Oops I'm such a increadible fag and posted pic when he actually has white socks.
Has to be a lazy mechanic thing. When you ride with gloves you get the tape dirty like 50x faster.
