Post your bikes, I begin

Did you fall? If you just laid the bike down always do it on the left side so you don't hit the derailer on the floor.
Got some new bars, slightly wider (only 20mm but feels like much more) and with a bit of rise this time, made a surprisingly large difference to how the bike rides. Also got new brakes, Hope E4, and they're fucking great. Have since shortened the rear hose but left the front alone as it's a pain in the arse with braided hoses.
Also also replaced all my frame bearings which was a fucking nightmare without the proper tools. Glad I did though as most of them where seized solid (so it would have eventually worn through the pivot pins I'm guessing) and others had so much play that I could wiggle the rear end like 2cm side to side.

Ive had this set up for a long time, a one liter bottle is more than enough to hold me over for an hour or two, and its easy to find a water fountain everywhere in Chicago, or a gas station.
The frame pump is crucial, mini pumps drive me crazy, and I love having a gauge.
My normal rides are between 80-120 miles. I only get two days off a week, so I try and do a century every chance I get.

Forever appreciative.
New bike, quite happy except the brakes are kind of annoying.
>>1087773
Very nice. The brakes are basically mini-v's right? Where's the battery, integrated into the frame somewhere?
>>1087775
Yeah pretty much V brakes on the rear, and something similar on the front integrated into the fork. Very good braking power, but awkward to adjust. The battery is in the seatpost, pretty nifty hiding spot actually!
>>1087742
Since when are Kona a BMX brand?
>>1087777
Very neat, as much of a pain highly integrated bikes may be to work on they sure do look nice. If you don't mind me asking what would does it cost? I don't know a huge amount about road bikes but it looks like something that would be expensive.
Also, what's the deal with the split at the top of the seat stays? At first glance I thought they may be removable but they look to be fixed at the dropouts.
>>1087781
Supposedly it has something to do with aerodynamics? I'm not really sure though, I don't see much of a purpose to it, maybe it dampens vibrations or something.
Brand new it would have been about $7000 give or take, it's from 2014. I bought it off of a fellow racer who changed teams and got a new sponsor bike, and I happened to need a new one after an accident. I picked it up without wheels for $3000, which is a bargain for the frame, cranks, dura ace di2, and whatnot.

Thx mate.
-Not using a dyno, I soldered a usb end to use the lamp with a powerbank. IDK if I'll even keep it, seems kinda frail and in a good spot to get knocked off.
-Stem is short, can't fit computer. Handlebar real estate too important to sacrifice.
-I figure I'll pick up a bar-end mirror along the way. Bought the right shifter on CL for 15 bucks and could never find a left, so this is my temporary solution.

Other than that it looks like a fine bike, the brakes are also old as hell so I guess Giant must've had some old stock laying around that they wanted rid of. Drive train would probably be your first upgrade to 1/2x10, the brakes aren't completely terrible but if you did want to upgrade the newer stuff is quite nice (SLX M675 is really good value) and would give you the option of I Spec gear shifters (not much practical benefit, they're just neat).

>>1088130
>>1087829
Thanks man, it's also a very cost effective way to tour, which draws me to vintage bikes more than anything. DESU I don't really want to know how much my total weight is. I know I'm going to be shipping some stuff home within the next week anyway. Probably pretty heavy but I've got a couple weeks worth of food(Moving anyway and didn't want to throw away my dehydrated homemade backpacking rations)
I plan to be out for a month, so ~66miles/106km per day. This is my first extensive tour, so if I can't manage that I'll just do what I can and enjoy the ride.
As for your ride, I would just get a rack rather than a basket. They're handy to strap shit to and make great mounts for visibility equipment. If you're gonna ditch anything ditch the front basket. Otherwise looks comfy and I dig your bar extensions.
>>1088143
Nice! Sounds fun, and a very realistic set mileage imo. My constraint is purely time off of work, so a week and a bit is about all I've got. You're bringing all the food along right from the get go? That's gonna be a ton of food to bring with you initially, isn't it?
Not ditching the front basket, it's brilliant for lashing things to and everything else you mentioned a rack is good for, and I've got a custom bag made specifically for that basket so I'll definitely be keeping it. The rear basket is on a porteur rack, it's already gone but the rack is currently there, and that's what I'll most likely switch out for something smaller.
>>1087873
chain first, but definitely address that overly aggro stance man. Would be fun for flat gravel like that, but not for longer rides. Looks fucking fun though, great build and props on the fenders.

>>1088217
I will this I's like 5 minutes after I replaced the tube in the back wheel because it was starting to rot, the rear tire is also starting to rot so I'm gonna have to replace it soon.
What can I do about this crack in the sidewall of my rim? Last night I was riding home on my Boardman team hybrid, I rode up a speed bump horizontally and hopped up onto the pavement, but the back wheel just about hit the curb and my inner tube popped due to the rim bending inwards a bit. I got the bend out with a claw hammer and now the sidewall of the rim is cracked slightly. Also how can I blacken the scratches on my matte black rims?
>>1088223
I wanted to sell the bike really, this has just made the process a pain in the ass.
>>1088223
modeling putty, sand paper, and a sharpie
>>1088223
If you attempt to hide that crack and sell the bike with a damaged rim you're an arsehole. That wheel is fucked and shouldn't be ridden as it's dangerous.
Also this should be in the BQG.
>>1088231
Alright, so I've got some matte black paint I found in the cupboard, matches perfectly. What can I use as an alternative to modelling putty? What about super glue from my puncture repair kit lmao, or should I just get some modelling putty, problem is I don't wanna wait for delivery.
>>1088232
If it comes out nice and doesn't look like a crack I won't mention it, it's the tiniest crack. I'll test it out and see how it rides to make sure it's safe first anyway. If not I'll just tell them about the crack
>>1088223
It's dead. Trash it.
>>1088083
Sure, especially on road cleats
>>1088234
Doesn't matter how small it is, it's a crack. All it takes is that one small piece of the sidewall to break off (they're under quite a bit of pressure from the force of the inflated tyre) and the tyre could potentially come off the rim.
Not only is it a shitty thing to hide damage that could potentially result in someone's death it is your responsibility to notify anyone who tries to buy the bike from you as it is damage you have caused. If they then choose to ride on it that's they're problem.
Think about it this way, how would you feel if you bought a bike and found out later someone had done what you are trying to do? how would you feel if your ended up in hospital as the result of a high speed blow out?

The main place where they keep all the good stuff is in Nokia, they also have a store in Tampere I think.
They have nice bikes but they don't advertise themselves for shit. I actually heard about the brand from a friend who lives in Nokia and almost couldn't belive that Finland of all places would have a local sports bike brand.
It's the usual deal, they desing the bikes and then order the frames from Taiwan and assemble the things themselves.
The rotate has an alu frame, carbon fork, a full 105 set exept for the cranks and chainrings and it cost about 1000€ and I was happy to pay it and have absolutely no regrets.

This scene had jagged dead trees pointing towards a full moon, but this is the best I could capture with my expired potato. This was fire road after some MTB trails where I rattled my fillings loose in the darkness of woods at dusk. Last time I was here was 2008, fond memories of when I used to ride with my middle school friend and rant about the importance of full suspension and hydro brakes. Now my 13 y.o. nephew is doing the same, he doesn't give a shit what I think about expensive fragile bikes, and so time marches on.
on that note new bike build is in the mail for me, 2x11 and not-cantis. I will miss the durability, good looks, clickety freewheel, hundreds of memories. but not the front brake shudder which was going to kill me unabated.

Bar ends has two parts: handle bars and "horns". Both are a fixed thing, so, at the comfortable horn angle, handlebar hurts as fuck. In the way you see, handlebar is ergonomic and comfortable, but horns "looks" down. By the way, i never use horns, they had lights inside them but rains fucked them up.

when i do 0 to 30 km on hills, i only need one bottle (750 ml), when i do mixed 40 to 70 km trips (road, city, hills in same trip), i need 2 of them. Third bottle (300 ml) is used when there is too hot at hills, as backup for 1st bottle.

>>1089339
I am namefag, not tripfag, and what's your problem? Be happy.
>>1089315
Looking great. Love super practical built up rides.
>next step is dyno lighting
Shit yes it is. I've got dynamo lighting on two rides (one of them >>1087770) and knowing I'll always have light regardless of time of day or duration of ride is great. Plus dynamo lights have fantastic beam patterns.
>>1089357
What light and hub do you run, and do you have any complaints? My only dyno setup is a bottle genny and original light from 1956 on my old Raleigh 3-speed.
>>1089339
>Tripfags are cancer.
Why

why, explain pls

Where is your smartphone, grandma?
>>1089388
never owned one!
>>1088122
Why do Surlys look so good and ride so bad.
>>1089364
What's to explain? Your bike is covered in duct tape and old tubes. And what the hell is going on with your handlebars?
>>1088859
Page Shot is so handy!
>>1089062
>Strapping on a nasty dedicated crank magnet
Just pop a rare earth magnet onto the end of the pedal spindle, much more elegant. It won't work if you're bourgeois swine with titanium spindles though.
>>1089180
Extremely subtle, possibly even mean.
>>1089220
>Two gigantic water bottles
You'll need to improve your taste or no one will work with you.
>>1089264
Of course it's worth fixing. Just replace the chainrings (along with the chain and cassette - they wear together) and keep riding.
>>1089398
Because you've probably never actually put any miles on one and are just regurgitating and opinion you read on the internet.
>>1089364
>he doesn't messlife
>>1089460
That's not a magnet, it's the whole sensor.

Is this ugly-ass steerer compatible with standard stems?

>>1089504
>>1089506
>>1089520
Thanks! Yeah, they are all mine.
>>1089502
It is, the steerer is a 1.125 to 1.5 taper. The shape is just the stem and spacers.
I can't understand people that put their bike on their car and drive somewhere.
why not just go ride there with your bike?
>>1089531
I don’t want to spend six hours biking to get to where I want to bike.

My winter/beater commuter frame came back from the powdercoater this past week...
>>1089564
... and I think it looks pretty fucking good. What does /n/ think of my rigid 90's mtb with slicks?
>>1089566
Liking everything but the downtube shifters.
My beat up Instigator
>>1089600
That front mudguard looks like it'll prevent most of the spray from the front wheel and the chainstays protect the brake from the rear wheel spray.
Just picked up a Giant Contend SL1. This is the first brand new bike I've ever had.
>>1089670
Looks like a great bike for getting into road riding more seriously.
>>1089600
I rode this frame last winter, never had a problem with the u-brakes getting filled with snow
>>1089580
Friction DT shifters are the optimal choice for this bike's intended use though:
-no extra cables/housing that would get in the way of handlebar pogies
-easy to activate while wearing winter gloves
-absolute minimum of cable/housing that can get iced up
-friction shifters allow for quick changes when I need to swap in my alternate wheelset with studded tires and lower gearing
>>1089410
it's not ducktape, it's reflective adhesive, tube is only to avoid damage by chain in frame
>>1089670
Rather nice choice.
I feel like it could use one more dash of color somewhere to personalize it. Something simple and functional, like accent-colored nokons for the rear loop.
>>1089670
Something fucky with perspective here.
>>1089590
That's big rotors.
>>1089590
goatman! whats cookin my son
>>1089699
some kind of voodoo bullshit going on for sure
>>1089531
There are many possible reasons. I outline a few below:
>Time does not permit
>You wish to start your ride free of all possible fatigue
>The bicycle you intend to ride is not suitable for the journey to the intended venue
>>1089670
What are the hoops on the bottles for?
>>1089753
Grab loops to help you retain your grip on them. I like them.
>>1089893
>Grab the loop
>Bottle is just dangling there
>Need two hands to adjust grip to take a drink
>No longer using the loop
What a stupid gimmick.
>>1089943
Reread his post. They're not to grab the bottle by, they're to slip a finger or two through so it's harder for the bottle to slide out of your hand.
>>1089700
Yeah, 203's... need good heat dissipation for long and steep descents.
>>1089749
Hey doode. BC is cookin' right now, due to all the wildfires. Was a bit smokey on the day I took that pic. Personally cookin' too trying to climb mountains in the nearly 30c weather we've had for the last while.
>>1090080
doesn't explain why front wheel looks as if it's smaller than rear.
Fresh from coming up a 24% gradient sandy/wet/root infested trail, on what are pretty much 25c slicks.
Good fun man, would recommend
>>1090096
I missed you, SI-kun
>>1090133
i dont see any reason for the front wheel to be the same size as the rear wheel except for convenience of buying rim, tubes and tires.
>>1090675
>slammed stem on multiple spacers
muh aesthetic
>>1090675
>slammed stem
I don't think that means what you think it means. The alternative would be a bunch of spacers above the stem which looks worse, or cutting the steerer tube which some people may not want to do due to resale value.
>>1090679
i agree it desnt look as cool as a flipped stem, but here me out. there is less distance from the handlebars to the front wheel if u have the spacers above the stem, so wouldnt it be more rigid?
>>1090680
Technically yes, but the difference would be absolutely tiny.
Also for some bikes the flipped stem is necessary to get that bar height. For example look at the Felt, if the stem was flipped the bars would be higher even if the stem was actually slammed due to the tall conical spacer. Even without that (which would mean spending money on buying a shorter one) the bars would still probably be higher. There are probably other bikes where this is also the case but I can't be arsed to look through them all.
really enjoying alum !!
>>1090687
Manlet!
>>1088408
what kind of wheels are those? Whats going on with the top of your headset?
>>1090719
I would say so, at 5 foot 9 inches
>>1087770
very nice, interesting angle on the seat post
>>1090728
" bianchi reparto corso Madux rx5.1 lite..."
P/O told me he'd taken them off his race bike when he put carbon wheels on his race bike. I dunno if they're any good or not but the bike seems pretty light all things considered, weighed in at 10kg on the dot which doesn't seem too bad considering it has those thick tubes, steel seatpost/fork etc. idk I'm not used to roadbikes, feels light as hell to me.
I do like the white wheels look though, I think I'll put white tyres on it to match.
>Whats going on with the top of your headset?
I have no clue, I am actually putting off figuring out as I do want to eventually convert it to a threadless headset and I don't want to find out it has some weird snowflake steerer tube I've never heard of, now that I've sorted out the seat height there is a semi significant drop to the bars and I feel quite stretched out, I'm sure it's very aero but it's not very comfortable.
Haven't ridden this thing in years.
>>1089670
How are those polar bottles? That red one would look great with my Salsa Bucksaw
>>1090829
They insulate extremely well but the insulation takes up quite a bit of space so get the bigger one. I highly recommend them for a long ride if you want a cold drink.
>>1090819
I'd ride the shit out of that sexy ass bike.
After 3 years, i finally got a new bike. Im gonna be so broke that im eating ramen for a few months. Building today, testing, then riding a 150 mile ride on Sunday if everything goes well.
>>1090819
Gorgeous
>>1090933
>>1090933
Sexy frame
>>1090933
Isn't it a bad idea to clamp carbon road frames by the top tube? I hope you don't fuck your nice new bike.
>>1090967
It can be if it's clamped hard. that clamp looks fine for it though.
>>1090967
Its not tight, just enough to support the frame.
After pic I wrapped the bottom clamp with a old mtn bike tube and electrical tape, so i could use clamp without compressing the top tube
>>1090967
Where else would you clamp an aero carbon frame with no seat post?
>>1090977
Well you'd rest it on the top tube and just use the upper part of the clamp to stop it tipping, not actually applying any pressure. I'm not sure if the down tube or seat tube are strong enough to support clamping. Another alternative is one of those stands that clamps the fork at the dropouts and supports the frame at the bottom bracket.
>>1090978
It's not made of tissue paper, those frames, while stronger in the directions that they're designed to be used in, they don't break like wet tissue paper if breathed on from the wrong direction.
Just don't clamp it down super hard
>>1090982
The seatpost should still be okay, it'll be thicker walled and is designed to take a clamping force.
>>1090982
Seat post is the correct way, but hanging off the top tube real quick to fill tires or whatever won't hurt it.
I'd still line the jaws with an inner tube to keep the finish pretty before those orange things slide off though.
>>1091003
I agree that seat posts are more built to deal with the clamping force potentially provided by a work stand compared to the top tube - but i don't think it's the best way to do it either.
The force on a seat post when clamped and the bike being hung from it in a work stand is different than it being held by the frame clamp and someone sitting on it.
The front of the bike acts like a weight on a lever when held this way, giving the seat post more of a bending action than a clamping/compression action it's built to deal with.
But to be fair I've not heard of any breaks due to this.
Just bought my first bike. $300 used; from a small local shop; going to ride the trails near my house for fun. How'd I do?
I got this yesterday and the handlebars stubbornly refuse to go any higher. Still can't decided if they're okay as they are or not.
>>1091022
$300? Seriously?
>>1091028
Huh, shame. The frame seemed quite large on me too. It's a wheel lock, but it's non-functional.
>>1091028
>>1091032
Hold on a minute, are you sure? I was looking at other bikes further up and a lot of them have the seat higher than the bars. I might be a bad judge though, in order I own a Donkey bike, a pedicab and pic related.
>>1091042
Could be i'm just very used to a laid back riding position.
>>1091042
If you have to use a stem with that amount of rise then 9 times out of 10 the frame is too small, or you're an old man with a bad back. That saddle to bar drop is in the right ballpark but they're an inch or two too high relative to the frame.
If it works for you and is comfortable don't worry about it, just pay more attention to sizing when making any future purchases.
>>1091046
The spacers were already on it interesting enough. I did the usual test though I'm aware of, i.e. step over it and see how high it is. About two fingers below my groin.
I'm not sure if it's right yet, because like I say I'm really not used to a lot of forward lean, and such narrow handlebars!
>>1091022
You got robbed
>>1091050
whats the story of this pick im very intrigued. cool bike
>>1091022
Not too bad, senpai. Most of that price was probably the labor for re-packing all the bearings, setting up the brakes, etc. Those early-'90s Schwinn hybrids were p. good in their day.
>>1091106
I was transporting things for some pictures.
Donkey bikes are great, I've had mine five years doing the shopping and transporting stuff.
>>1091022
man 300 is was too much.
I would seriously consider giving it back
>>1091022
You're the one who's ridden it, you tell us. It's easily not worth $300, but if the bike shop threw in some free maintenance and support, and if the bike rides good then it's not so bad. It's not like you bought a $3000 fred sled or something.
>>1088074
Top Mekk
>>1091022
If they stripped it down to the frame and rebuilt it with new cables & housing etc, I'd say it's worth $300.
Think about it; you'd be likely to find the same bike on CL for $150-200, and it probably would have needed another $150-200 worth of repairs to be safe and perform well.
>>1087829
ohey its me im back
Just scooped this up for $70, has brand-new tires on it.
I put on new pads, cables, and chain. Going to get some new tape and clean up the hoods.
<3 me some indexed downtube shifters.
>>1091326
Man you sure take this n+1 thing seriously. Was it a bike shop cop too?
>>1091330
Indeed it was. Customer had a bad motorcycle crash and is selling his bikes to offset medical costs. I told him last fall (when he got the new tires) that I love his bike and would be willing to buy it if he ever wanted to sell it.
Can't say I expected such a great deal on it though. Honestly I never expected him to sell it, but I couldn't say no when he offered it to me. I have a problem. Send help plz
>>1091336
Hey, I'm sure any of us would have done the same.
Care to share some details about the bike? Like, what's up with those lugs?
>>1091340
not him, but isn't the Technium designated as steel lugs and alu tubes? or something like that, right?
>>1091340
This one is crimped/glued AL tubes and lugs for the front triangle and a TIG welded steel rear triangle and fork. Light and pretty stiff.
>>1091003
Sweet..you also have a gan..i just came home from a 154mi ride. This bike is a beast. I am so freaked out with this bike. I helicopter taped the piss out of it and constantly use a torque wrench..my Aluminum bike, i would torque by feel
>>1091326
Great deal, nice color.
...also pic of complete bike
Ride is superb, i hope the frame holds up
Couldn't let the old 27 rims go to waste

east from CO to WV. Middle of KS now. Was gonna go to a wedding in PA but abandoning that plan. I would have to average 80sh to get there on time. OMW to Katy trail soon. Hot as hell out here.

I have been thinking about getting a rockhopper as my first real bike after countless BSO's. I saw a original rockhopper at the library. Damn these things have come a long way.
>>1091428
Nah, 265lbs 5'11 man, but I'm all love
>>1091482
Do. Am Rockhopper tourbro itt and highly recommend. Early 90s hoppers have some cool schemes.
>>1091645
Pretty sure he's looking at getting a modern Rockhopper, not some piece of shit from 2 decades ago that would barely be an upgrade from his BSO.
Hey guys, is my bike secure?
Gotta post my old beater. 1972 Schwinn Suburban frameset, now 700x38c SS Coaster brake. It's 30 pounds on the nose. Might throw on an 8-speed Nexus coaster brake wheel I have.
