I tought the same thing until I bought my first road bike - with 25mm of traction fork flex is almost a bigger issue on road than on mtb when descending.

27.5", unlike fork/axle flex, is an absolute meme doe. absolutly no proof that its better than 26" its jsut good ol planned obsolence.

Im not saying its bad, my point is the revolutionary advantages you get from 26" arent there, sure it rolls better, but its less agile etc. so the marketing part is memeish.

tapered anything can only bring profit (unless you count the joy of new standard) and brings real and mearurable advantages without the tradeoffs (like you get with bigger wheels and disc brakes on road bikes.)
